"The job of the prosecution is to smear and prosecute"? That's as ridiculous as saying the defense attorney is there to attack the victim, lie, cheat steal, or any means to get his client off. All of you posting about prosecutors and their motives, defense attorneys, guilty until proven innocent, prove himself innocent, what jury's do, don't do, what they consider, how they are "stacked", etc... watch far too much TV. I understand there are a million different Law and Order shows out there but I suggest watching more building, renovating and house hunter's shows. Then we can set up a new topic for how to build a house, remodel, sell, or buy. Maybe another one for how to retire before you're 40!
Wait, I could've retired before the age of 40? Son of a biscuit eater, why didn't anyone tell me this!

So yeah...Josh and Brad have known about this since September and allowed TJ to play and be around the team/Illini Athletics. Do you really think they would stake their entire reputation solely based on believing TJ's side of the story? They have a lot more evidence pointing to his innocence than is being let out right now.

What would happen to JW & Brad's legacy if TJ gets convicted of the allegations thrown his way and they knowingly downplayed it?

I will let you ponder on that one.

Just a horrible situation all around right now...
Might we hear some of this stance tonight? Is JW going to defend TSJ publicly this early?

Except stacking juries does happen. A friend (who is a defense attorney) recently had an issue where all jurors of a certain race were asked to be replaced by the prosecution. After the 5th, the judge warned the prosecution because it was blatant.

For all the speculation, there are a few absolutes:

Consent can be withdrawn at any time up to conclusion of the act (except in North Carolina).
Consent must be affirmative (do you want to xxx? "yes, I want to xxx")
Consent must be part of a continuous communication. "now do you want to take xxx to yyy?" "yes, I do"
Consent can NOT be given under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Consent can NOT be given if unconcious.

Less absolute, consent can NOT be given under threat, also known as sexual coercion. This is tricky, but any perceived threat can be seen as coercive and in this case we have a very tall older man who appears to have had sexual relations with a younger woman. Unless they previously knew each other and had a relationship (and maybe even then) coercion is almost impossible to disprove, particularly if she sought medical care/rape kit within a short window of the incident. Whatever TSJ's intention, he faces a difficult road here.

I do hope that everyone on this site uses this situation for some kind of good. I know this is site about sports. I am a sports fan, and I am not a prude. But I do have to deal with this stuff and I have seen young men (and older ones too) fail to create safety and respect. Looking back, things I did in college failed most of the moral and legal standards above. I am only saying that because I don't want folks to think I'm judging or holier than thou. If you are sexually active, you need to be educated about this stuff...

Being underaged and around booze is too common in college to lay any of the blame on that in this instance. This could have easily happened at a house party as a bar. If she'd been 21 and legally able to drink alcohol, the situation would be the same. It's a wrinkle, not a determining factor here.

I'd also caution against the narrative of "why would he force a woman when he could have one willingly." There are plenty of people who commit sexual assault because it's about the power play, not getting off. Or rather, the power play is what gets them off.

Not saying that's TSJ at all, just cautioning against a very slippery slope.
I agree. I just don't see "a good young man" which i believe TSJ is doing this. I also feel being somewhere illegally and drunk is more than a wrinkle but it is not the main cause either.

So what is the best bet for catching Whitman's press conference live? Any local radio stations that can be streamed?

Some recent developments that I have heard on my end....Illinois thinks that they can get him reinstated. If the story I heard lines up, this is complete BS

Again, this is still a developing situation
whats the latest?

In the first place, I'm praying I wake up from this nightmare real quick.

But it's now been going on for over twenty hours since I fell asleep yesterday at the mall while waiting for my wife to finish shopping, only to open my eyes and turned to my Loyalty site..... and see this!

..... I was hoping I was either still asleep and dreaming this horrible mess, or maybe worse, I am in a comma and my only hope is that I will come out of it in time to watch TSJ introduced in the starting lineups of tonight's game.

This is gonna get real messy if it hasn't already been messy enough. I think I have read all of the nearly seven hundred comments, and I may be repeating something that's already been said, but I must have missed if it has. Anyway, the "gonna get messy" part will be when the multitude of attendees at the bar that night who know more about all of this than anyone else, come forward in defense of their friend, Terrence Edward Shannon Jr. They were there, they witnessed, if not all of it, surely the part where she willingly (or unwillingly) went into a dark corner with him or whatever. Now for the sake if sounding like I'm excusing the incident as anything less than what it was, I am just left to wonder, what was it that happened, and how did it get to the point of what the accuser said took place? (*Note: more on that later; see below.)

Hers's a thought; if I was a hunk superstar, and I see a beautiful lady that I'd like to meet, and when I did, it would be on the top of my mind, wrong or right, to want to kiss her. One might think sparks could fly and the next thing I'm thinking is, well she must like this and then one thing leads to the next and before you know it, the sparks turned into quite a little fire, ready to progress further. She maybe knew in her heart it was wrong. He maybe knew in his heart it was wrong. But by now the fire is blazing. How do you put out a blazing fire? Cold water would help. My question is: why was there no one there to pour cold water on the fire? (*Note: For more on that, see below.)

Now, I'm not a Sociologist, or the son of a Sociologist but I probably could have used one when I was that age, and here's the thing; I'm just saying, this is how many relationships begin, that end up lasting for several minutes or a one night stand, or the rest of our lives. At least that's how I remember it used to be in the good old days in the 70's and 80's. Probably even going back since Adam first saw his "future" wife Eve. I'm sure it hasn't changed.

*Now my last point is this. How much governing or protection or security do these superstars need? None? I hope Josh and Brad, if they didn't know the pitfalls of superstardom before now, they will never forget. TSJ should have never been alone to fall into this temptation. There should have been at least one, if not two, football players of high moral fiber, staying glued to his hip to prevent this from happening. There are millions of dollars at stake for everyone, from TSJ himself, to Brad the Coach, to Josh the AD, to the University at large, even down to the pay for service bloggers and the concessions among numerous others. This should never happen. There's too many lives that can be ruined. Too much money lost.

SMH with saddness.

We'll now get to see just how much depth we really have in this year's team. And how much chemistry, and how much heart.
We can still go far. We must rise to the occasion of this latest unforseen challenge.

Go Illini.

Gathering info from other sources. Dan I apologize I am breaking any rules here. I trust you will delete if that is the case.

I live about 30 minutes Southeast of Lawrence and my wife, a KU alum, has multiple family members who work in Douglas County Law Enforcement. Here's some details:

1. The chick alleging the rape and intercourse without consent was NOT a KU student. Kind of a fascinating side note to this story and similar stories out of Lawrence involving student-athletes. The "victims" are almost always young minority women from Kansas City, Kansas or Topeka. The hot blonde KU sorority chicks from Leawood aren't the women levying out assault accusations at student-athletes. Interestingly enough, when a KU student-athlete also gets some woman pregnant, it is almost 100% someone in this crowd.

2. I've heard the Douglas County DA was initially hesitant about filing charges over credibility concerns regarding the allegations and the victim. And if you know anything about Susan Valdez, she usually jumps all over any type of rape case. The discussion among the local law enforcement is this victim wanted a relationship or something more from Shannon, and when he ghosted her, she started hurling allegations. he also apologized via electronic communication which could be considered an admission of guilt and that's why the DA decided to follow through with the charges.

I
feel like Shannon and maybe even the Illini's 2023-24 season is likely shot. But, I do believe he will be ok in the future. I don't think this case will ever go to trial, and I absolutely believe he will never be convicted.

I can't see JW doing anything more than being very careful here.

His job is to recognize an incident, confirm the suspension, show his concern for all parties involved, hammer home the fact that there is a zero tolerance with respects violating the code of conduct, advise that the suspension is indefinite and that there is no timetable for any decisions and they will be complicit in all requests to aid in the matter.

I would not be surprised to hear that TSJ has taken a leave from the school, for the time being, while this process is ongoing and he will work on what he needs to work on.

There was some commentary on here for hopes of a quick reinstatement....I just don't see it.

I have hard time not thinking there is some credibility to this. Considering Illinois knew about this since sept. I would think the university would be very conservative if they had overwhelming evidence. Idk I just think Terrance would’ve taken a leave of absence or something.

Overall it’s a sad situation.

I think Josh/Brad have handled this well so far. They had every right to play Shannon until he was charged. Now you simply have to suspend him unless something changes.

I see a lot of people jumping to conclusions. TSJ deserves better. We have something called "due process". TSJ deserves the chance to defend himself. Sadly, he is a high-profile figure, and a lot of women may know that and could be chasing dollars. But on the other hand, if he committed a crime, he must face the music.

None of us knows what happened. This is sad on so many levels.

Our team is deep, and we are still a final 4 caliber juggernaut.

Not without the second best player in CBB

Interesting read…. I can see TSJ being apologetic…. And getting taken advantage off…

IANAL and I have no special insight…. I believe the version of the story above

It was legal for 18 year olds to enter bars in Urbana when I was in school. 19 in Champaign. This was '05-'09 so not TOO extremely long ago.
On the lighter side, I was in Kams way back when (1981?) as an underage 19 or 20 year old who HAD been legal to drink in Illinois a year or two prior. I spotted then gov Jim Thompson in there, and starting bitching to him about raising the drinking age. His response, "You're in here, aren't you?"
Touche.

TSJ doesn't deserve better and he doesn't deserve worse. It's been handled well. He played well and even though they all knew that there was a "situation", there was a concerted effort to paint him in an extremely favorable light. He was being promoted as an All American by BU just last week.

The charges were made and it's being addressed accordingly. He's suspended, indefinitely, until further notice.

We all love TSJ as the key cog to our team. That's undoubtedly true. That said, he's not a victim right now. He's not being wronged. Regarding conclusions, go back through the thread. Those conclusions are going both ways with MOST siding with TSJ.

Have to let it play out.

I do have to address your last sentence and am doing so with the comment being COMPLETELY separate from the legal situation.

No matter how much we want to make ourselves feel better about this team....this is no longer a Final Four caliber team, it's most definitely not a juggernaut. Let's see how tonight goes, then move on to NW.

There isn't one team in the country that could lose their best player(by far), a consensus All American, an NBA draft choice, their go to guy, their team's unquestionable leader and face of the program....and be ok. Not one. There are some teams that might be able to absorb it better than others, but they can't replicate what they had.

If BU can clear the cobwebs from his group and finish the conference season at .500 with a tournament appearance...it'll be one heck of a job. Remember one other thing here...our lofty NET ranking right now is really moot because the body of work included TSJ. We would have gotten run off the floor vs FAU. The season is starting over today. Nothing prior means anything. We all are hoping for the best and there is still hope to be had. We still have a good group that I think can be competitive, but the margin of error between winning and losing now is very, very little.

Leaving the specifics of this issue aside for a moment – I want to say that this has been one of the best threads on this forum in some time. Again, not for the troubling matter itself, but in how posters here have largely treated it.

Most all the takes have been reasoned, thoughtful, and heartfelt. And many very informative about the legalities and implications involved. Many expressions of concern for everyone involved and for the welfare of the Illini program itself.

And if you wonder how Illini Nation here has treated this issue... just think about some other fan bases on other sites and how they would have reacted and expressed themselves. Not a pretty picture.

Illini Nation has some of the very best fans (if not THE best) in all of college roundball. All you guys and ladies have got credit coming to you.

There is great deal of good in this program and in the Illini fan base. And you have just proven that once again.
