I'm definitely no expert in these type of situations, but is it true that after charging defendants legal team start their own investigation to build their legal defense for charges to be thrown out or for trial?

Or since the defense team knew since September of this investigation, they have doing their own investigation in preparation for this?

Curious if there's any knowledge about this.

I really am going to be very careful about the comments I make on this …

Leaking info on things like this is how you lose sources …

However I can say I’ve talked to players, staff, our athletic department, and TJ’s lawyer … I’ve got a pretty good idea of what we’re looking at …

As for the staff and players … We have got a game tomorrow and that’s their focus …
‘Nuff said. FDU is the focus.

I've been hoping to see a post from one of our insiders saying how Brad/the university share the same belief as TSJ and his lawyer that he's innocent..

But Indy lville mad 0440 have all posted without saying anything of the sort.

Hope it's due to a lack of information to this point and not conflicting beliefs

For Indy…

Is this something the team/staff/Terrence has been aware of since September?

How long have you known? How widely has it been known on campus/publicly?

Is Brad concerned? Has he coached the team with the thought he could lose Terrence?

The body language of this team… Terrence going about his day to day… the shock… I just cannot believe it. Never in a million years… what the heck.

I’d imagine as far as really commenting about anything, it’s more of a “better to not comment at all than comment incorrectly”. Honestly, I’m shocked that our insiders have said anything at all at this point.

I didn’t think it needed to be said that of course Brad and Josh believe their guy is innocent.

Hell dude, I appreciate it but I wouldn't touch this subject again.

Much love though.

I can't imagine they were expecting this based on "the scariest thing in basketball" tweet and also the little Terrance Shannon 20 for 20 that they did.

Except for those folks closest to the players – family, friends, coaches – the majority of countless thousands of fans look at these young men/women who are college athletes as ball players only. I mean, how else can we know them? How else COULD we know them?

And being humans, these young athletes are going to reflect everything we see in all of society. All kinds of personalities from all kinds of places and backgrounds. Some great minds and thinkers. Some regular-type guys/girls just playing a game they love until they get out of school. And some troubled souls who are on a bad life path. And eveything in between. In short, Saints and Sinners and Stay-at-Home souls. A microcosm of all types of human beings.

I don’t think anyone honestly tries to fail in life or make terrible choices. Many of us do make bad decisions that we are indeed fully responsible for. But our background and upbringing does have something to do with the choices we make. And the people we hang around with. And the influence our parents and other family has on us. Yes, we are a complex mix. And some things that just uniquely our own.

As we all can agree... if the charges are legit this is sad on many levels. The consequences of this event will reach far and wide and for some time to come almost regardless of what happens next.

But when we do wrong... we do pay a price. Somehow, some way. In its own given timeframe.

Speaking in general and not specifically about this situation... the actions of any one person simply cannot be allowed to derail a sports team... an institution... the fan base... or the future of all of these together. You cannot allow a personal failure to fester and grow beyond its own tragic scope. Or poison others who had nothing to do with such a bad event.

All of us – women, men, young and old. At our base level we are the same. A creature mix of good things and not-so-good. Of potentials realized and potentials lost. Promises made and promises broken. A trail with many wins and many losses along the way.

When these kinds of sad events happen... feel bad for everyone involved. Feel compassion for victims (if there are any). And feel the tragic consequences that arise when we fail and fall short of our best. And the consquences that a doer of bad deeds will face, somehow.

And hope for redemption for everyone - and every thing – touched by such an event. Because Life -- and the games -- will still go on.
Longtime lurker, alum (2x), and college administrator. I am very touched by both this post and the response. The delusion of college athletics as a bastion of possibility, of good versus evil, and of growth, is absolutely shattered when a young men (let's face it, the abusers are men) with seemingly superhuman skills give in to the causes and conditions and inflict a lot of harm. I wish that Illinois men would be more mature, kind, thoughtful, and supportive of women than everyone else, but we're not. But just as we have to own our mistakes and their consequences, so do these young men who we place so many of our own dreams on. Puffing young men up, making them stars, and feeding them the lie without also giving them tools around self restraint, understanding consent, and recognizing when situations are potential for danger is a problem far bigger than the Illini.

I grieve for the victim, who -whether she consented that night or not, clearly is impacted - and for TSJ. Maybe we can all be a little more reflective about what really matters in situations like this: and it's not Ws or Ls. When this happens everybody loses.

Discussing this from purely a basketball point of view, I agree with your sentiments, but disagree with the thoughts that this won't derail the season. This team went from top 10 with Final Four potential to a bubble team and even that's a maybe.

You just don't remove a first team All American and replace him.

The NET, at this point, is also out the window because it's indicative of a team with Terrance on the court.

If we're being positive, it's a good season to have the roster makeup be that of experienced seniors. They'll have to hold this together until they get their sea legs. Their philosophy on both ends of the floor will change, the rotation will change, they're going to have to reestablish roles, etc. We're basically back to the beginning of October again with a 0-0 record.

That is basketball commentary only.
Next man up....

Great questions Chief. Upon further reflection, I might ask will he stay in school, even if he is innocent? Regardless, the blow to his psyche will likely take years from which to recover and any possibility, or reality, of his return to the team this season will likely see only a shadow of his former self.

What we know of TSjr., the public figure, player, and representative of the University, has always seemed so positive in many, many ways.

Of course, this kind of allegation is not new in our world and serves to show others how important it is to take some time to reflect on where you are and with whom. Today's athletes obviously are now walking a much narrower tightrope without a safety net than those of the last millennium. Having graduated 55 years ago, the social landscape has changed drastically and the landmines, for both men and women, are more difficult to avoid.

Bottom line TSjr. has provided all of us with a shocking and disappointing reminder of the pitfalls of our passionate support and interest in college athletics. I hope this gets resolved with some satisfaction to both parties, but that young man, and the young woman involved, will have their lives changed forever starting today.
Two thoughts:

(1) I sure hope the truth ultimately comes out and everything is resolved accordingly. Trust in the process.

(2) Can't help but re-emphasize the excellent point bolded and highlighted, above.

The university is essentially an uninvolved 3rd party in this and thus shouldn't be making statements as to guilt, innocence, or anything else.

Sounds like a classic she said, he said, alcohol involved, consent/morning after regret defense. These cases s*ck, for both sides, and often are never charged. If she was bruised, battered and went to the cops that night or next morning, anyone, including TSJ, would have been arrested immediately. Just my educated guess. Don't go all political on me, I have been both a prosecutor and defense attorney over my career. Just talking reality.

What a hard pill to swallow. My speculation between what happened between TJ and this young girl is useless, but I do feel it was probably somewhere in the middle. I find it hard to believe that our staff or atleast BU and JW weren’t aware of this situation. I keep going back to BU’s presser after the Missouri game where he said that he really hopes that people get to see what a great person that TJ is. I don’t think that was said just to be said. What a sad situation for all involved. 99.9 percent of us will never have a relationship with these guys, but I know for myself, I can’t help but to be drawn to every Illini team and our media team does a great job of connecting us.

Let’s go beat FDU and hope to channel that energy from the Christmas secret Santa and pure joy and love these guys seem to have for each other.

I believe it a tactic by the prosecution in which you charge the accused with the highest crime (in this case a felony) and also crimes of a lesser degree (in this case a misdemeanor) in order to boost your chance of getting some sort of conviction if the accused is not found guilty of the highest crime charged. Hence why the term "alternative" is used. If there is no merit to the higher charge, there still needs to be consideration given to the lower charge.

TLDR: prosecution is boosting its chance of a conviction by bringing multiple charges.
Wishful thinking here: The second charge is there to provide a route to a quick plea bargain where TJ pleads to a misdemeanor, pays a fine, and returns to the Assembly Hall in short order.

Not likely, but also not impossible.

My question is more about what is actually fair? I guess these days a person is actually guilty until proven innocent. why Josh gets paid the big bucks.
Pretty much, once a person has been arrested, they are guilty even if acquitted.
