I am sure BU and JW knew the allegations and thought that NO charges would ever be brought. I am sure they believe he did nothing criminal. I am also guessing when we hear the actual "facts" of "alleged assault" we will be even more in disbelief that we lost our AA player and potential special season over said "allegation." Time will tell.
And he loses so much more than that. Of course we are thinking about our awesome player and special season, but he's thinking about his collegiate legacy and his professional opportunities.

Under the law in Kansas, any penetration is considered sexual intercourse and can lead to a rape charge.
Sexual intercourse is part of a rape charge in Kansas. Kansas law:

(a) "Sexual intercourse" means any penetration of the female sex organ by a finger, the male sex organ or any object. Any penetration, however slight, is sufficient to constitute sexual intercourse.

As others have said - it all comes down to consent.

I doubt it too. JW will be very succinct with his statements and we likely won't get much insight. But, one thing that should be done by the media is to question what they knew, how much they knew, and why they let TSJ play if there were allegations swirling around. It really does our program no good knowing that we built this team around TSJ as the face and now have to basically reconfigure everything midseason. I would've rather they knew about the allegations and advised TSJ to step away from the team so the team wouldn't have to face the after effects of what is going on now. I feel like this is where JW and BU went wrong. This team could have had more time to learn how to play without TSJ and now we're almost midway through the year. It's going to be very difficult for BU, staff, and players to mentally re-group and move forward without their brother. But, to also be fair, BU has a history of completely overhauling offensive schemes midway through the year when the original schemes were deemed to not be successful. So, this isn't totally new for BU to have to change things on the fly
I think your long diatribe is completely, unequivocally and 101% the wrong way of thinking.

Whitman is in a total no win scenario. There are those who would not be happy unless Shannon is drawn and quartered on live TV (aka Dan Bernstein). There are others who would not be happy with anything less than a full throated, stand by my man Shannon defense. He has to try to walk the tightrope to protect the university and support his staff and athletes.
I think the two polar opposite groups you talked about represent about 100 people, most not even Illinois fans. Whitman loses to those people on just about any given day once he orders his breakfast.

Whitman can win by being forthright and honest. I think a solid statement as to why they kept him on the team is a good idea. The only real tough question he'll have to answer (if he chooses) is the circumstances under which Shannon returns.

Same. My information comes from the law enforcement side - I was told the victim alleged he fingered her in a bar after the football game. And that she initially said it was a football player but after seeing TSJ’s image, identified him. Seems like the same story is coming from multiple angles. I was also told he gave a dna sample and admitted to being in that bar that evening.

Well, this is the same story as the tweet but the details are (unfortunately) a bit worse. The tweet made it sound like she was okay with the act because she thought it was a football player, but later found out it wasn’t. This makes it sound like she reported being violated and thought the violator was a football player but then identified TSJ when given a lineup of sorts.

Jury selection procedures make it impossible for one side or the other to stack a jury. Both sides receive a limited number of "peremptory challanges," 7 each in felony cases if my old retired memory still works, which allow them to remove a juror without articulating a reason for excusing them, but when those are gone the only thing remaining are "challanges for cause," and those are not routinely granted.
If a prospective juror is a minority then even with a peremptory challenge an attorney would need to give a reason.

I've always wondered what he thought when the Duke Lacrosse team allegations were happening.

Right, but in a bar in the presence of many others I presume, it was forced? Then it took 4 months to line up credible evidence to charge? Just does not add up given those circumstances. That is why I say there has to be more that is not yet public. Just sucks for TJ and the IL program to have to be in limbo. But, I understand that is the process....for better or worse.

I have not read all 29 pages of this thread but did read the last several. I see no mention of the Douglas County DA that I think brought the charges. Has she already been discussed? She has a very controversial two year track record in this job. Has this been discussed already? She is just this week went through a 3 day disciplinary hearing. She previously was placed on administrative leave from KU Law for unprofessional conduct. She claimed it was retaliation for her statements about KU not handling a false rape case claim properly.

She's been mentioned once or twice...

Agree that it’s not clear which of these is true. I assume because they got a dna sample from him that she reported the act as non consensual that night.

In keeping with your consistently valuable posts, that was truly a public service.

On the lighter side, I was in Kams way back when (1981?) as an underage 19 or 20 year old who HAD been legal to drink in Illinois a year or two prior. I spotted then gov Jim Thompson in there, and starting bitching to him about raising the drinking age. His response, "You're in here, aren't you?"
Touche.
They were kind of forced into it because the feds were threating to take away funds. A few states held out but most fell in line.

Yes, I copied and pasted from a source provided by another user few pages ago.

IMHO, the DA position is a stepping stone to higher office, more money, more power, and prestige. DA’s already feel like they’re god. Once you’re god and then move higher, your ego explodes exponentially. They campaign by claiming they’re ‘tough on crime” and made the streets safe. I hope that the DA (via her assistant DA) is not using TS case to pony up and panegyrize her image!

What I am posting below may have been brought up on one of the many posts or maybe portions of other posts. That being said I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the whole let's go to Kansas for a football game, out to a bar and then whatever unfolds. Why go to Kansas for a football game? I know basketball players will attend home games from time to time but I'm betting it's not every home game. He really drove there for a game? As far as I know, he has no family there. I've heard a rumor that at one point while there he was with Hunter (probably BS). But again, why go all the way to Kansas? Was it really that big a game? Then while you're there you head out to a bar? Ok, I get that no big deal but you got to know maybe not everyone in the bar would know him but even a casual Kansas Basketball fan would see a 6'7" guy who isn't on the Kansas team and ask, who is he? A recruit? Wait, that's no recruit, that's Terrance Shannon from Illinois. So we got all this going on now let's add in, he's 23. Yes that's young but he's been in college what 5 years now? Before that he was a star high school player. He ain't a babe in the woods. Plus, I thought I saw that when a player tests the NBA waters they go through interviews and even "classes" on what it's like to be an NBA player and the scrutiny you are under not to mention all the attention. He wasn't a lock as a first rounder even with how he's playing. He knew he had to be on his best behavior, whether here, Kansas or anywhere else.
He had so much at stake. More than just college and his pursuit of achievements both individual and team wise but his future, which every kid does, but a future with huge monetary opportunities involved not to mention fulfilling a dream.
It is also my understanding he is a good student and has been striving for his degree while practicing for long hours and playing games.
So, with all of this at stake, with the what we know above, why did he go to Kansas?
To me there had to be something that brought him there. A prior or long distance relationship (whether for weeks, days or hours) which could have been just through texting or whatever social media app they choose.
I can't help but think there is some background here with either directly with the victim (yes at this point she is considered a victim) or with a friend who helped connect the dots.
Heck, when I was in school we had some buddies who called and said they were having a party and there were going to be some girls and we ought to come over. We piled into a car and were out the door in minutes.....TO EASTERN ILLINOIS!!!
Why did he go to Kansas?
