Hey all, I had an update on the Shield practice hoodie a lot of people were asking about. Upshot is it won't be available unless we ask for it en masse, so if you want it, I suggest providing feedback to Nike. I posted about this in the Nike rebrand thread, too (with a pic of the hoodie in question).

I've exchanged a couple emails with some folks at Nike. Here is the second response from Nike.

Good Morning Weim,

This e-mail was transferred to me and am pleased to say that I am also a fellow Illinoisian! I lived in Tuscola, IL for a very long time and went to school in Chambana!

I am completely aware of the on-going demand of the Illini Shield gear. I wish that I had some inventory to show you that was exactly what you were looking for so I do apologize for any inconvenience as we only have the Illini gear provided to you in the previous e-mail. Believe me, I wish we had the Shiled gear available as well!

I've met with my team to see if there were any updates on upcoming Illini gear with the Shield present and there doesn't seem to be any word on whether or not we will. I've captured your feedback and provided it to my leadership team. We definitely want to reload the web-site with what people want most and can assure you that it's feedback that continues to influence our business decisions.

The best way to check out new releases and restocks is to visit Nike.com periodically. If there is anything I can do to further assist you or improve your experience, please let me know! I'm happy to help in any way I can.

Have a great Super Bowl Sunday!

Sincerely,

Micki

I believe this is the email address I was contacted with by Micki. As Epsilon says, and Micki reiterates in the email, the more they hear from us the more likely it is we may get some Shield gear. Have at it Illini Fans!!

Hi Steve,

That is a very awesome hoodie! Being from Illinois myself, I can definitely appreciate wanting it to be available.

I did some searching to be sure and was unable to find any inventory of the Illinois hoodie on Nike.com or in Nike retail stores. I was also unable to turn up the hoodie at any of our authorized online retailers.

That said, I have let our product development team know that the Illinois hoodie in the pic you sent is something you would like to see offered in the future (as would I). Feedback like yours helps us know what our customers are looking for and can help to drive and influence our business decisions and we thank you for sharing it.

If you have any further questions or comments, don't hesitate to reply to this email.
Thank you for contacting Nike and have a great day.

Sincerely,

Timothy

I'm sensing a trend here.... we should send emails complaining about various schools.

"I too am a diehard supporter of the Far Eastern University Tamaraws and can appreciate you wanting that polo in green."

Nike isn't going to respond to emails. They will respond to sales figures. If fans buy more shield logo items, they will produce more different kinds of apparel with the shield logo.

I agree, but it's also curious that the amount of shield products on their website has dropped from the initial unveiling (This is the only product that has the shield featured prominently: http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/d...nois-training-shirt/pid-1466455/pgid-10304955 ). It is difficult to find shield products on other websites as well, beyond a couple of t-shirts.

It would seem like Nike sold out of their initial wave of products and have since made no effort to replenish or embellish inventory.

The obvious inference to make would be that Illinois fans outside of this forum aren't that interested in shield logo products. There was probably an initial surge of shield sales, but interest (and sales) probably waned after that.

Just curious, since I don't recall combing the Nike gear site much at unveiling, but did they ever have that much Shield gear for sale? Has anything changed or were there always slim pickings?

Agree with the poster who said that it'd be better with the number on the right and lower. I like it otherwise.

I haven't run into very much, just a couple of dri-fit shirts and a really ugly hat.

You would think that for all the time and effort Nike put into formulating a secondary logo (and the rebrand as a whole), they would make a greater push towards fan acceptance and adoption of the logo. I'm chalking it up to being their 35th most important collegiate client.

For comparison, check out recent rebrand Oregon State and their number of products versus ours on nike.com. We have 9 products on the website, OSU has 50.

I've actually seen a decent amount of shield stuff around Champaign, even with older fans. I think it looks best on polos and quarter-zip jackets, which is where I see the majority of the shield gear.

I agree and continue to believe that they really hit the nail on the head with the shield. I wouldn't want it as our primary logo (like on TV broadcasts, helmets, etc.) but used as an accent it is wonderful.

Regarding nike's use of it, my guess is they wanted to see how it sold this fall before going all-in on it. The winter line of basketball merchandise would have been placed and designed sometime this summer so too soon for this fall sales input. My guess is that if we see more shield items it will be next fall or perhaps in the spring line which is due out this month I believe.

Yep, they could be doing a bit of a delayed launch. To GHD's point, if it's not selling they won't continue to produce it. But that logic only holds if they had a good test run with it. From an analytics point of view (my wheelhouse), I don't think you can generalize too much about all shield products from one shield product. I also suspect Nike uses many forms of analytics for its decision making processes, such as social media and yes, even emails. So I don't think its a waste of time if you're interested in seeing it.

The Women's BB team should have their new uniforms for the next home game Thursday night, they've been delayed in arriving so we'll see.

I was wondering about this. The ladies have been rocking the old font uniforms for the whole season. It'll be nice to see them get into their new threads. They could use the lift.
