I think one thing that people are failing to mention about the new redesign is that the new primary logo is great -- the block I. It's a significant improvement over the previous block I; taking out the double outline makes it look so much cleaner, and the rounded inside are a great albeit subtle detail that improves the logo as well. And when you're the University of Illinois, having an "I" as a primary logo is a no-brainer. It's classic, clean, strong.

Maybe. I think, and it's only my thought, but I think you guys like it because it's ours. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. I honestly don't even care. If it was 50/50 I would agree that it's just a case of some like it some don't. The seemingly 90/10 nature of it suggests to me that there is some underlying psychology going on.

But isn't "you only like it because it's ours" a fairly all-in proposition? If that holds, how come I don't like the two-tone lettering and think the zig zags on our bball uniforms are hideous?

You need more time in the Skinner box. ;)

It's all just a smokescreen, duh. We aren't fooled.

And yeah, the more I digest them, the basketball uniforms are driving me nuts. They are very explicitly just a Nike-fied, Chief-ified version of the same designs we already had. There is seemingly no overlap in vibe with the football uniforms. That may ease up somewhat when the new letter font is printed in the endzones and such, but still. They would have been much better and much more consistent with everything else if they would have ditched the silly Chief dog whistle zig-zag for a more subtle side panel (how about the football striping?), ditched the two-tone font, and made the number colors and borders exactly match their football counterparts and had the lettering color match the colors of the wide football collars. The orange basketball jersey is the most successful one, largely IMO because it echoes the football design most closely. That and the gray because it apparently doesn't have the Chief stripe.

Now I know we're a "basketball school", so maybe the other option would have been to build the football jersey out from the basketball design, but I just think the football ones are more successful overall.

Agreed. Focus on the block I primary logo, which is improved.

That said, I do like the secondary logo given the symbolism and nod to the past there. The chief sunburst logo will always be the secret underground ultimate symbol, but publicly it will be the Block I as primary and shield "victory badge" as secondary.

Still, I can't help but think of the shield trophy in rugby, which in Hong Kong Sevens tournaments is the trophy for the lowest consolation bracket (top four play for the cup, next four for the plate, next four for the bowl, last four play for the shield). I don't want the Illini to play for the shield...I want the Illini to compete for the cup every time. Of course, lately we've been more likely in football to come away with the infamous wooden spoon trophy.

I'm ok with the shield logo. I'm not mad at it and yet it doesn't do much for me either.

When I first saw it, I immediately thought 'K-Swiss"

Judging by the actual unveiling, I would seem to think that they really used the Captain America logo. Like this is basically the Captain America shield redesigned for us.

Speaking of mass fan psychology, I do find it interesting that the detractors' various proposals to "fix" the shield are mostly appeals to sand down all the hard edges and conform it to a more conventional aesthetic. I'm no graphic designer, but isn't the point of a secondary logo to add visual dissonance in juxtaposition to a minimalist primary logo that consists of solid geometric block? That the Illini Victory Shield contains eccentricities that you don't find in the Interstate highway sign or the insignia for the 1st Calvary Division is sort of the point, isn't it?

All that said - is there any actual evidence of this being laughed at en masse by fans of other schools? At some point you guys putting this forward as a reason it bothers you should probably have that.

This.

Even if it were the case, why would we care what other fans think about it? Would love to see a poll here on the shield posted. My bet is that TeamShield wins by 5:1 margin.

I agree with the outlines, and I don't even mind the curve (although it's not preferred.

But the new proportions are a step back in my opinion. Feels too tall, less strong.

Overall, we have some work to do with the rollout of the rebranding. Adjusting website colors, logos, i-phone apps, etc.

www.fightingillini.com looks a little disjointed right now with the color variations in the orange.

I am a little surprised that DIA didn't have all of this set up before the rebranding.

I have the opposite reaction to the new block I. I think it looks stronger and more bold. Which makes sense to me since they made the horizontal strokes thicker.

Wow, don't some of you guys need to go mow the lawn, rearrange your closet, clean the garage, something? Give it a break. We have what we have. If changes are going to be made it will be a ways down the road. Fretting about the day old releases does no good. Constructive criticism is one thing, say your piece and let it go, but to b!tch! incessantly is someting else. And yes, when you put forth the same anti redesign schlock 30 times in a 24 hour period any credence you may have had disappeared after about the 5 reiteration. They may not be perfect but it's pretty obvious that the majority of Illini fans, and non-Illini fans alike, approve of the updates. Ever hear of Majority Rules? Overall it's a definite upgrade. I don't care if you have a Doctorate in Design or 20k posts on some internet message board, the people have spoken and there are plenty of other threads on IL that you may want to devote some attention to. Last I looked the dissenters haven't swayed a single poster. :shield:

That made my head hurt...

Hey, someone noticed! Thanks. This has been bugging me. Whoever posted that thing about the burnt out light bulb in the lamp being ignored because there were 4 other lamps in the room, GHD maybe? Do you honestly have a room with 5 lamps in it? :noidea: If so this odd quirk could explain some things. ;)

Wait, do people really not like the new shield logo? I think it's awesome.

Well the problem is the people who like it only like it because of group think. The Syracuse fans liking our uniforms is Syracuse group think.
