Maybe. I think, and it's only my thought, but I think you guys like it because it's ours. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. I honestly don't even care. If it was 50/50 I would agree that it's just a case of some like it some don't. The seemingly 90/10 nature of it suggests to me that there is some underlying psychology going on.
You need more time in the Skinner box.But isn't "you only like it because it's ours" a fairly all-in proposition? If that holds, how come I don't like the two-tone lettering and think the zig zags on our bball uniforms are hideous?

I think one thing that people are failing to mention about the new redesign is that the new primary logo is great -- the block I. It's a significant improvement over the previous block I; taking out the double outline makes it look so much cleaner, and the rounded inside are a great albeit subtle detail that improves the logo as well. And when you're the University of Illinois, having an "I" as a primary logo is a no-brainer. It's classic, clean, strong.
I'm ok with the shield logo. I'm not mad at it and yet it doesn't do much for me either.
When I first saw it, I immediately thought 'K-Swiss"
Those look like blue ones with a bright light on them. I could be wrong though.
All that said - is there any actual evidence of this being laughed at en masse by fans of other schools? At some point you guys putting this forward as a reason it bothers you should probably have that.

I agree with the outlines, and I don't even mind the curve (although it's not preferred.
But the new proportions are a step back in my opinion. Feels too tall, less strong.
Wow, don't some of you guys need to go mow the lawn, rearrange your closet, clean the garage, something? Give it a break. We have what we have. If changes are going to be made it will be a ways down the road. Fretting about the day old releases does no good. Constructive criticism is one thing, say your piece and let it go, but to b!tch! incessantly is someting else. And yes, when you put forth the same anti redesign schlock 30 times in a 24 hour period any credence you may have had disappeared after about the 5 reiteration. They may not be perfect but it's pretty obvious that the majority of Illini fans, and non-Illini fans alike, approve of the updates. Ever hear of Majority Rules? Overall it's a definite upgrade. I don't care if you have a Doctorate in Design or 20k posts on some internet message board, the people have spoken and there are plenty of other threads on IL that you may want to devote some attention to. Last I looked the dissenters haven't swayed a single poster.

Speaking of mass fan psychology, I do find it interesting that the detractors' various proposals to "fix" the shield are mostly appeals to sand down all the hard edges and conform it to a more conventional aesthetic. I'm no graphic designer, but isn't the point of a secondary logo to add visual dissonance in juxtaposition to a minimalist primary logo that consists of solid geometric block? That the Illini Victory Shield contains eccentricities that you don't find in the Interstate highway sign or the insignia for the 1st Calvary Division is sort of the point, isn't it?
Awesome post. :thumb:
Wait, do people really not like the new shield logo? I think it's awesome.
