"But I just think it's way too early to be talking about anything right now in that regard"

That's an odd way to end your statement if you're not interested.

Yep, it's really easy to say you're not interested. We get convoluted statements like this when people are interested.

I don't think the issue here is whether George would consider coming home, but rather do we have anybody in this University with the competence to bring him home. I'm pretty skeptical about that.

I sure hope this poster isn't on the search committee, but I think these comments must be how people around U of I often think.

Comparing Whitman (AD at a D-3 school) and Shawn Wax (never been an AD) to George is like comparing a major leaguer to a single A player. George is operating at a completely different level than these guys or Tom Michael. There is no comparison.

I was not attempting to compare Wax or Whitman to George. I said it is not the end of the world if we don't land him. I meant to imply if the criteria is to hire a person with UI background AND George is not interested then you have to look at people like those I mentioned. If a background with the UI is not a requirement, then there are many, many possibles but a limited number of high end men or women who would step into this quagmire with the hire being handled by an interim Chancellor and a particularly weak BOT with no strong leader. If George is truly interested, why in the world would you need a search committee and a search firm, which is the direction this seems to be headed. No I'm not on a search committee but if we get to that point, our historical lack of diversity in the hiring of coaches and administrators will likely be a hot topic for that group.

I hope you're right. I just think there are better was he could have phrased it without dissing CU IF he leaves.

Where's the diss? I've read the statement several times and don't see it.

You don't tell your wife how great she is and how much you love her and then leave in a month. Not saying he won't it's just tacky.

But if he neglected to mention Colorado at all, everyone would assume he's decided on Illinois. Everyone wants to talk about this in absolutes. Has anyone considered the possibility that George sees pros/cons to staying at Colorado and pros/cons to coming to Illinois? I'm assuming that's where he's at right now. He's possibly leaning in one direction (not sure which), but I wouldn't be surprised if he is going through his own decision making process right now. His statement keeps the door open at Colorado and Illinois, while he works this out.

Just my uninformed opinion here, but since it seems too good to be true, I'm expecting him to NOT be our AD anytime soon.

People keep bringing up Khan. Have we recently made up with him? I heard Khan would have nothing to do with us after we did not give him his honorary degree? Plus, if he were involved with us we would be having a MUCH better SFC/AH replacement/renovation.

I don't think we can gather too much info from what he said here. That's about what you'd expect someone to say whether he's thinking about leaving or not.

I think the only absolute may be: he hasn't 100% ruled out taking the Illinois job, if offered. Because if so, he most likely would have said so.

It's clear that he's very interested if the right offer is put on the table. Offer being more than $$, meaning administrative support, stability, family buy-in, etc.

Would love to have him at the helm.

That's the most non-denial denial I've ever read.

Sounds like he is open to the job.

Given this, I'm going to assume that he's campaigning for a raise at Colorado or Illinois somehow messes this up and we don't get him.

Well it's a lot to consider. Come home and be king and hero to your alma mater? Happy in Colorado? One good thing is he's not been in Colorado long so no deep ties. In my opinion he played his statement both ways.

WIFE: "Are you sleeping with your co-worker?"

YOU: "She hasn't called me and I haven't talked to anyone. I'd be lying if I didn't say at one point in my life she wasn't my dream situation. But I love it here with you and I'm excited about what we've accomplished since we've been married as well as what the immediate future holds. But I just think it's way too early to be talking about anything right now in regard to me ever sleeping with my co-worker."

Perhaps they're upset at first, but nobody in the long run in Boulder will blame Rick George for coming back to his alma mater. How could you blame someone for doing that?

That statement screams I'm interested. Now it's about putting together a good enough package to get it done.

Can we hope that some discussion with George precipitated the Mike Thomas firing?
