My money is on absolute silence until late next week, then a report saying a Tiley deal blew up over a lowball offer, and that Barb Wilson, the search committee, and the BoT are bitterly divided over who to choose from the rest of the group.

Time to revise your AD odds.

A few theories based on the slim information we have:

1) The committee waited for Tiley, spoke with him (maybe via phone), and the two quickly realized they weren't in the same ballpark on money. Hence the Tweet from Cation. (Of course, anybody with the slightest bit of competence would have figured the money issue out a couple months ago.)

2) George beat out Tiley. Hence the Tweet from Cation.

3) The smoke about Tom Michael is real - it's going to be him because we are too cheap and shortsighted to pay up for George or Tiley.

Or, maybe none of the information we have is accurate. :)

Assuming it's not going to be Tiley I'm praying for #2 and am fearful of & expecting #3.:hurl:

If I had to guess, I would say that it's likely this is a CYA for one of the three reasons you mention. But again, that's just a guess. However, I agree that your scenarios are very plausible. Hopefully it is number 2, but I doubt it. Most likely #3.

I vote for #4 everything is inaccurate

Time to revise your AD odds.
I think it is the last option: Ryan's report is wrong

I certainly hope not. I want so badly to believe that Illinois is starting to recognize you pay dearly in money and reputation for botched athletic hires.

Spend the money required once. Period.

Here's how I expect it to go down...

Craig Tiley: "It's going to take $1.2 million a year for me to be AD."

Barb Wilson: "Mr. Tiley, we are prepared to pay you $1 million, that is the maximum our budget allows."

Craig: "Then, no thanks."

=======================

Barb: "Rick, you definitely are not interested?"
Rick: "That is correct."

========================

Barb (texting both Josh Whitman and Tom Michael) "Whomever replies first gets it. You're the new AD for $400,00. Who wants it?"

Tom Michael just comes off to me as the Tim Doyle of the candidates. He thinks he's the smartest person in the room, but in reality everyone else sees him as an irrelevant Dbag....

but that's just my take on meeting him a few times at basketball games when he worked under RG

Here's how I expect it to go down...

Craig Tiley: "It's going to take $3 million a year for me to be AD."

Barb Wilson: "Mr. Tiley, we are prepared to pay you $2.4, that is the maximum our budget allows."

Craig: "Then, no thanks."

Barb: "Rick, you definitely are not interested?"
Rick: "That is correct."

Barb (texting both Josh Whitman and Tom Michael) "Whomever replies first gets it. You're the new AD for $1.3 million. Who wants it?"

You're numbers are wayyyy high.

Follow up Tweet from Mike Cation:

Oh. I also need to say, I desperately want for it to happen. There's no better choice. Hope that it still can. But there's been no intervew

My .02. Hiring Tiley or George shows that IL wants to get serious about athletics. Whether they succeed or not, we swung for the fences and went all out. I think that is something the fan base needs to see and something we would appreciate.

On the flip side, hiring Tom Michael (who is a nice enough guy but doesn't really have the dynamic personality we need) screams status quo or worse. It's a hire that will placate the handful of donors that revolted when Thomas was hired after Guenther. But I think it will cause many many fans to just say forget it and give up. Like I said, just my .02.

I'd agree, but there is a grand canyon sized gap between them also. If there is any way to get Tiley or George, there should be no other choices. Not sure what the decision is. If they want to originally get all the applicants to make sure they don't miss someone(2 months ago) then I can see that. Other than that go hard after the best possible and get it done.

What gave you that impression? That he's largely the only person liking his own tweets or that he thinks Bohemian Rhapsody was a David Bowie song?

Is this the real life,
or is this a China Girl?
Caught in a landslide,
or Suffragette City?

Open your eyes,
look for Modern Love and see....
I'm just a poor boy,

I just don't understand how Tiley wasn't even interviewed. Am I mistaken to think that it would be asinine not to interview the guy?

I'm pretty sure we've at least made an effort to conduct an interview with him, it's just a matter of whether or not he made the choice to fly out to Indy for an in-person interview, which is against our will. One report claimed he did, but we're starting to here rebuttal(s).

Well, if Tom Michael is hired, you may think you're reacting negatively based on those perceptions you have of the man himself and also the process that resulted in his selection, but it will actually be because you unrealistically expected someone that would inspire instant confidence. Also, the concern you expressed in your last sentence concerns "outside" aspects of the AD job, which don't matter.

Everyone remembers two or three weeks ago when it was leaked that Josh Whitman is the new guy right? I feel like those were all saying its a matter of time and no one was actually refuting it.

Are we back to that now that Tiley (may be) out of the game?

Well again Cation didn't deny he is a candidate. Maybe he just couldn't get to Indy this week and they'll meet him next week. Maybe Shannon had it right that he was supposed to be interviewed but somehow couldn't make it.

You shouldn't have to interview Tiley. If George turned the job down, you call Tiley to offer, not to interview.

It's a public institution. Processes (however obstructive) have to be followed.

And it's quite possible that Tiley indicated he was not interested. He's got a great gig right now and is literally on top of the world in his field.

Fixed. It is Australia, after all.
