Let me present A.Miller.... The perfect combo platter of recruiting on the area with coaching chops. Also, on the whole don't think of Miller as a candidate because he is going to wait on the OSU job to open eventually when Matta finally leaves, you mean like John Groce was going to do? Coaches don't pass up opportunities like this without a very good reason. I don't see Archie at Dayton next season. He will take the challenge and show people he is just as good at coaching as Sean.

Exactly. *IF* he is truly waiting for the OSU job to open up, make him an offer he can't refuse to a job on a similar level with OSU - Illinois. There would be no reason to refuse. Obviously if he wants NC state or is waiting for something bigger to open up, more power to him.

It will be irrelevant in the context of the game IMO. Next time we play, it will be two rivals with new coaches going at each other.

For the most part yes, but I do recall Illini coaches in the recent past mentioning directly in the media that this was a special game and they attached extra significance to it. Obviously they do their best to win every game but if that were the case then that could mean increased game planning perhaps or a bit more emotional pre-game speeches, etc... I could be wrong but it seems to me Self made mention of this whereas for Kruger it was more like just another non-conference game albeit with a unique atmosphere. As a fan from the metro-east who grew up with this game and the pro Mizzou STL media, any added meaning that the Illini attach to this game is a good thing from my perspective.

If Missouri was off the table, yes, but very likely not UI when Missouri became an option to do just that.

If Cuonzo had ended up at UI (which was the premise of the argument), it is possible that Porter Sr would have accepted a position as an assistant on his staff at UI. They do know each other, they have a relationship. It is unlikely that Porter Sr. would just risk not having a job, or just hope for a position under any coach who would end up at Mizzou. If that was the case, he would not be at Washington with Romar.

Interesting timing waiting for exactly when the first game of the tournament starts.

So first time poster, but it is interesting to read the thoughts of this board.
Disclaimer- I graduated from NCSU but have Halloween pics of when my mom dressed me like the Chief, been a diehard Illini fan since I can remember.

It's interesting seeing the views of this board about the various openings (particularly NCSU). I can appreciate that people not from the Southeast can view NCSU as an undesirable job (to quote our ex-coach, Gottfried, "it's a tough neighborhood"). That being said, the a school has 2 National Championships and a little bit of recent success (4 tournament bids and 2 sweet 16s).

Another interesting footnote is who are being linked to the openings right now. When I started reading here, I was shocked to see UVa's Bennett listed. Speaking from experience, he plays extremely ugly basketball, and that is kind of why his teams struggle in March (Defensively brilliant, offensively lacking which is shocking Bc of their recruits). Honestly, I don't see him leaving UVa, his job is super safe there.
If it were up to me, I would focus on Archie Miller or Hoiberg (spelling? Bulls coach who may be fired). I think Keatts is phenomenal, but his recruiting base is in the southeast. I am sure he would be able to kill it in Chicago, but that's a big transition and as Illini fans, we aren't the most patient of fans.
Martin flames out and leaves every spot he has been at (inherited a good team from Pearl at Tennessee and butchered it).
Hoiberg took Iowa State and made them super exciting to watch and I think he is a natural fit. NCSU would love Archie, but there are rumors he wants Ohio State. With that being said, I think Illinois is a natural fit, his recruiting base is still fairly close, he could tap into Chicago, and I think he is great Xs and Os wise.

O, and extra cherry on top for my first post, a couple of friends mentioned to me that Gottfried is pursuing the Mizzou job 😂😂😂

Well, !!!!...With IU job open now, Archie and GM become harder to get. I think we likely end up with a Bryce Drew or Keatts

If we end up with Jankovich, I would rather have gotten Martin. At least, we know he will recruit well.

Agreed

Jank is one my least favorite names mentioned

+1

Jankovich is doing a great job, but he's got a very significant talent advantage that he inherited from Larry Brown. He wouldn't have that at Illinois unless he recruited the talent. There's no evidence he can do that.

I was hoping Martin would be the worst we could do in this search. I'm not so sure now. Let's just hope Whitman is still the smartest guy in the room.

Crean out.

I counter-intuitively think this is a good thing.

If you want a bigger job, this is now your year, and Indiana can only take one.

You have to explain this. If our biggest sell to both Miller and Bennet is better access to recruits and in the midwest, I think IU being open is a big problem.
