That Josh Whitman dismissed out of hand and without elaboration using a a headhunter in the coach search says a lot. Not too sure exactly what, but I'm pretty sure it means he has a very few guys in mind and will making a few phone calls followed by a few stealth trips.

In this age, there will be a lot of people tracking his every move, as well as those of coaches who might be in his crosshairs.

Bite your tongue good sir! Krystkowiak is an A+ candidate!

Holding out a prayer for Archie, but Krystkowiak is a name I am befuddled by the lack of excitement over. He will win next year here if we hire him, take it to the bank!

It appears you and I are his only fans.

Krystowiak has a good but not great track record as a college coach IMO. This year was definitely a step back. If he's our coach I'd be fine with it but not elated. He's done well pulling up lower profile programs, first Montana and the Utah in PAC 12, and believe he has some upside with our platform

No monty or lavin. Hmm

If we're looking to really compete and pay well, I make him one of the top paid assistants in the country. I think his ability to recruit Chicago along with a top notch coach could make us a perennial contender. Not sure if money and his alma mater are enough to get him away from Lawrence, but I sure as hell try. We need someone big to help us win the battles for the Jabari Parker, Jahlil Okafor types.

NOOO JH please!

JW will not settle unless desperate. He will be trying to hit the home run in the next week or so. If we don't land anyone, then the many coaches mentioned on this board will be considered...I think Shaka or a Lavin is that out of box huge hiring he is pursuing.

You've got to know the tail numbers used by Whitman, traditionally he has blocked info from public view.

ND has made the Elite 8 two times in a row. He's coached mediocre talent to a decent team for years. I just don't know if his mediocre recruiting is due to academic standards or because he is bad at recruiting. Either way, we all love him here.

If that's what you get from mediocre talent, Ill take some. There is something to be said for smart, athletic kids that can shoot. Assuming they all have to meet the same academic standards as the rest of the student body, I would say they must learn quickly and are easy to coach. There are a lot of schools fighting for the same highly rated players. Maybe there's a better way.

I went through and reviewed every power conference school's coach outside the Big Ten to see what the potential pool of candidates might be. There were some definitely interesting tiers and a reasonable pool of "maybes" to consider:

Hall of Famers (Roy, K, Boeheim, Wright, Calipari, Pitino, Self, Huggins)

"Unicorn Hires" (Miller, Bennett, Altman, Buzz)

Early on the job (Mike White, Avery Johnson, Bryce Drew, Jerod Haase, Prohm, Underwood, Beard, Smart, Mullin, Hurley)

Good Coaches, probably last stop (Larranega, Hamilton, Dixon, Kruger, Mike Anderson)

No thanks, not good (Manning, Pastner, Brownell, Stallings, Gottfried, Christian, Cooley, Thompson, Leitao, Weber, Kent, Tinkle, Romar, A. Kennedy, B. Kennedy, Fox, Barnes, Jones, K. Anderson)

Don't know how to classify, but no (S. Drew, Alford, Pearl, F. Martin, Howland)

Remaining Coaches: Krystkowiak, Enfield, C. Martin, Boyle, Holtmann, McDermott, Willard, Wojo, Mack, Brey)

Ranking the remaining coaches:

1) Krystkowiak
2) Mack
3) Enfield
4) Holtmann
5) Brey
6) Wojo
7) McDermott
8) Willard
9) C. Martin
10) Boyle

Add in Archie Miller, Gregg Marshall, Kevin Keatts, Eric Musselman from the Mid-Major ranks and my personal top 5 goes like:

1) A. Miller
2) L. Krystkowiak
3) G. Marshall
4) C. Mack
5) Keatts/Musselman (tie)

Enfield, Holtmann are right there though. Brey gives me a big meh feeling, but I get he has been pretty successful.

Fox is interesting. I tend to think he is a good coach who would benefit from a fresh start, but that is just gut feel.

Depends on your guess as to what "very very" means.

The very successful P5 coach that hasn't been discussed on here previously would be a pretty small list. Altman popped into my head so I mentioned him before going to bed.

Brey, Larranaga, Barnes, Alford? I dunno. Prolly just an internet rumor anyway.

Doesn't matter because he has things rolling at UCLA and isn't going anywhere. But Alford would cause me to never watch Illinois again and root for the death penalty at Illinois.:(

If we really have 4-5mm budget here, then I'd really like us to go after Jay Wright or Jaime Dixon. Doubling their salary could be enough...

So I heard something in the past 90 minutes that I can't tell if I was being pranked or not. I was told that JW's top target is a very very successful P5 coach who's name I haven't seen (nor would have ever thought of being "available") listed as a potential hire.

I won't say who because I refuse to believe it's true.

I still think Jkat is our most reliable resource when it comes to forum posters with information. Would also love to see Lincoln add his $.02

I do not have any inside info, but my read of the situation is that we are looking to hire a coach who is in the tournament.

I believe that because Whitman talked about it being a longer process, and I think with all the time he has as to consider a new coach (a year+ really) if he were going to hire a coach from elsewhere, he would wrap it up quickly.

Also, I agree that it won't be a current NBA coach.

I'd be really, really surprised if that happened. He's got the Arizona program in a really good place. It's a program already at the level that we SHOULD be, has a rabid fan base, and is in a pretty neat city in which his face is plastered on billboards throughout town. I don't know why he'd even consider moving.

It's a dry heat. Mrs Miller longs for higher humidity:thumb:

The only way I could see this is if he's not happy with the administration there. He's also making $4.5 million. Could we realistically offer more? Maybe, but that's really pushing it.

Whitman's comments yesterday about there not necessarily being qualitative difference between $2.5 and $4.5m coach tells me that he certainly isn't ruling out getting someone whom he'll pay $2.5
