JW said he's not going to announce anything tomorrow (Monday, 3/13) because the NCAA tournament is on, so basically if he has a coach already "hired," there's a good chance he's coaching a tournament team, rather than someone who is doing something else right now. He's not going to distract from that coach's duties while he's still obligated to do his best for his employer, fans and players. You wouldn't want an AD who would, and wouldn't want a coach that would accept on those terms.

But if he doesn't have a coach already committed, he's not going to go knocking on a door that no one's behind because said occupant is off at the NCAA tournament: "Hey, I'm dancin' heah."

Sound Logic-My predictions in tiers if correct:

Tier 1 - Strong Possibility with all variables factored, especially my preference. Limit to 3 each Tier

Archie Miller (Still think this is our next coach)
Kevin Keatts, Would be a "Signature hire if you will"
Andy Enfield, Intriguing, has to fight UCLA, Pennsylvania native

Tier 2
Fred Hoiberg, Leaving NBA? would love to have him
Bryce Drew, Has proven enough, family loves where he is though.
Counzo Martin, Recruiting is staple, coaching is MEH so far imo

Tier 3
Lon Kruger, Wish he would have stayed actually the first time
Gregg Marshall (buyout-salary HUGE)
Matt McCall, My PICK for an up and comer if one hired other than Keatts.

For whatever its worth, flight coming into CMI from Nashville today.....

EJA612 C56X Nashville Intl (KBNA) 05:51p CDT 06:45p CDT

Sometimes this flight tracking gets to be too much grasping at straws. People fly to other regional cities from a regional airport. A flight to or from Nashville means someone is flying. But it doesn't mean Bryce Drew is leaving Vandy after a year to come here.

Agree that the staff is key. I think this was Coach Groce's undoing. He seemed very loyal to the staff, but I don't think the staff did a good job of covering up for some of his shortcomings. Folks are Purdue told me that Bruce Weber did a lot gameplanning and in game adjustments when he was on Keady's staff. I think Coach Groce's time here would have been a lot different if he had an assistant like that.

I would like to somehow see a Coach come in with an appreciation for the Illini Family, and try to bring in someone like Dee, the Rev, Deon, Kenny Battle, etc and try to develop the Illinois coaching tree. These guys all have potential. Can't say how impressed I am with listening to Deon on the radio. And I guy that would be huge, and might soon be looking for a career change would be Deron. I remember Coach Webber or Self saying something about how great it was for team chemistry when the best player is the hardest working player, referring to Deron.

How about this for a just over the edge of feasibility scenario... Lon Kruger comes back at forms a staff of ex-Illiini. Lon finishes his career here and grooms the "family" for a potential successor, while the family locks down the state.

Love the mention of Kruger. From what I recall the reason he left us for the NBA was that he didn't like recruiting. Thus my thought that we could bring in "the family" for that. Seem to me like a dream scenario.

And Bryce Drew is certainly not flying to Champaign minutes after his team's name gets called on Selection Sunday.

If ever, flight tracking is only going to get us anywhere in about a week's time.

But wasn't Whitman flying to see Keatts last night? Or Colangelo in PHX? :D

Digging through bigger name coaches that might have some interest (outside the box edition):

Dana Altman - Really has things rolling at Oregon, but is a midwestern guy. As good as Oregon is, they're a football school first in a small market state. To get players, Altman has to heavily recruit out of state. He's also making $3m/year on a long term contract that he just signed last year (buyout would be pricey). We could offer more, but Oregon knows what they have in Altman and could also offer him another pay raise with all the Phil Knight money.

Mike Anderson - Maybe not a BIG name, but a guy that has been successful at two P5 programs. His Missouri tenure and shady exit don't look great, but his record has been impressive. He's made teams better at every stop. He's making $2.2m/year, so there's room to offer a better salary. Would he be interested? Would we? I doubt it, but worth a mention.

Sam Cassell - Another NBA guy, but one who has been mentioned for a number of NBA head jobs. Currently with the Pacers, so there's some proximity there (if not true connection). Would bring name recognition, but no college or head coaching experience. Long shot without a doubt.

Mark Jackson - If we can't get Monty, why not another fairly successful NBA coach? Sure, he's been an NBA guy through-and-through since he stopped playing, but that didn't stop us from pursuing Monty (reportedly). He would bring instant name recognition. Would he be interested in a move to college in an area he doesn't have any real connection to (that I know of). Who knows, but if we're thinking outside the box, he's an interesting name.

Kevin Ollie - Is it crazy to include Ollie? Probably, but something tells me it isn't a complete non-starter. After a rough 16/17, would he jump ship at the opportunity to start fresh while making a little more money? Might be worth a call.

Mark Jackson has tons of baggage and issues. Not a future leader of college kids. If he ever coaches again, it will be in the NBA. Or maybe St. John's would take a chance on him one day. But no thanks here...

Please address all the other clueless ideas.

When a poster comes on and says that he heard from a source that it is a very successful power 5 coach that he did not think was even available folks are going to naturally put out names that they do not think are available. It is part of the discussion.

Just so everybody understands, the Bulls firing him was an absolute prerequisite to Hoiberg being a possibility. He's 100% off the board.

And to put some meat on the bone, Hoiberg wants to be an NBA coach. That has always been his intention. He took the Iowa State job because that's a very special place to him being his hometown and Alma Mater where he's "the Mayor", plus he was young and very inexperienced as a coach, that was a big opportunity to turbo-charge his career at the time. Nonetheless, by all accounts he didn't exactly relish all the stuff that goes with being a college head coach. The recruiting grind and babysitting aspects of it were not for him.

On the Bulls end, his contract is fully guaranteed for three more years after this one at $5 million per year. If he is not fired, he would be walking away from $15 million, plus the league that he wants to be coaching in. That's not going to happen.

A month or two ago it looked like the Bulls were spinning so badly out of control that they would have to bite the bullet and eat all that Hoiberg buyout money. If that had happened, Hoiberg still probably would have been disinterested in another college job, but at least you've got the chance to sell him and flash some cash. It was worth at least discussing at that time.

The Bulls situation has settled down though. Hoiberg won't be fired midseason and probably not at the end of the season either (not that that matters for our timeline). That ship has sailed.

Illini Ad Man

Hawkeye land (previously Jayhawk Country)
Archie Miller would be an incredible get.
Keatts might be a solid coach, but falls short in experience highest level and not big advantage in Chicago.
Kruger, really? He didn't want to be here the first time and was run out of Chicago recruiting circles. Granted the latter was partially because he wasn't Jimmy Collins.

Illinois has some amazing things to sell, including recruiting area and cupboard isn't bare. Too often, these coaches are asked to come from a comfortable situation to a school where they have to spend several years to rebuild. That won't be the case with Illinois. The turnaround has to happen on the court more than the recruiting trail. Recruiting can get better, but some of that will happen with more wins.

Was REALLY hoping for Monte...now that it appears he's off the table, I am hoping for Keatts. Maybe this is wanting the pendulum to swing away from Groce's weakness, but I like the fact that his teams have an identity. Would love to see that style of play in SFC. Archie would be fine, too.

Prohm would be a good hire IMO. Maybe not a game changing big name, but someone with a solid resume. He's making $1.5m/year until 2020 (plus some extras), so we could almost double it. Are we a better program than Iowa State? Historically, sure. But he came into a good situation there and has things rolling. Not sure he would jump ship two years in.

I got it .... The Coaches have been watching these NBA Dream Team's coming together & are looking to form their very own. Billy Donovan is coming to IL & he is bringing Coach K as his Associate; Izo is going to be the assistant handling the gamelans; & ole Bill Self is the lead recruiter.

That group may be able to win a few games. :D

Anyone else want to play the Price is Right (closest without going over) guess the hiring date/time for 100,000 internet points?

I'm going to guess/hope for a UNCW loss over the weekend. Keatts hired at a presser Monday the 20th at 11 AM CDT.

Not a fan, a good coach, but not a good fit at Illinois IMO.

Can you expand? Winning isn't a good fit?

Never understood people saying that about Marshall. He may be a little brash and arrogant, but we had the nice, perfect-for-community, devout christian types in Weber and Groce and look where that got us.

Sorry to keep beating the drum for Kruger, but I think did an amazing, and yet under rated job in his time here. You all debate whether Weber and Groce left a more bare cupboard, you should look back and see what Kruger inherited, and what he left for Self. NO ILLINI COACH HAS DONE SO MUCH WITH SO LITTLE IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. You younger guys need to go back and read a bit, and you will see how both Kruger and Self built the program that Weber took to the finals. As for the idea that Kruger didn't want to be here... He left Florida - whom he took to the final four - to be here, and he left us for a NBA paycheck w/o having to recruit. As I recall it came down to he and Izzo for the Hawks job. I sure never got the idea that he didn't want to be here. He left a great situation for us, and he left us for an even greater situation.

Lon Kruger left a great school in a great location that he took to the final four, to come here with an empty cupboard. The reason we don't appreciate him more is that he turned it around so quickly, and set us up for fantastic success after him.

If Illini are thinking outside box, look at Seth Greenberg or Jay Bilas. Basketball knowledge, media attention and recruits know them.
