I'm confused as to why we keep thinking Tony Bennett would leave a superior basketball program for U of I. Even if we offer a bigger contract, they have boosters that would match.

Now, let the Coaches start denying interest in the job and parleying that into a raise at their current school even though we had no interest in them. Or as my Grandpa would say, "Let the Dog and Pony Show Begin". I do think Whitman will get the his first choice, whom ever that may be.

Unless you believe that Monty was his first choice

Because they are a waste of money, and slow down the process. If you can't find who you are interested in you are in trouble. I have seen no value brought by search firms at all.

waste of money, slow down the process, AND usually pick the obvious choice that any executive of standing should have already had in mind. They provide no substantive value.

Why is having no search firm a good thing?

I think many view search firms as a waste of time and money. They're helpful in certain situations, especially if a change is unexpected and an AD needs to gather a ton of information on lots of candidates. That's not our situation. JW has had plenty of time to research candidates and decide who he wants to target.

All that and they may just tell you to hire some guy who has a buddy at the search firm. See Stallings and Pitt last season. Awful hire.

A search firm was mentioned by one of the Chicago Newspapers. Apparently that wasn't the case.
I think Whitman wants to get it done quickly. but if we are to believe him, he isn't far a long with the process. In a way, that figures, because most of the top candidates will be coaching their teams in the NCAA tournament.

I would be shocked if he hadn't put feelers out to his top candidates already to get a feel for interest/money it would take

It is a sign often that the hiring entity doesn't know what or who they want to hire or why. Also slows the process down and those firms are influenced and controlled often by agents and coaches and those who have interests other than the good of the program in mind.

What a telling comment about the defense on the last possession of the Michigan game. Went with the players wishes and switched to man.

He did say "We've had people reach out to us" which I interpret as AD speak for yes there have been back channel contacts.

As do focus groups, team building exercises off campus, Friday afternoon Webinars etc

FWIW Archie Miller would be at the top of my list if I were Whitman. We'd have to pay big to get him, but the sustained success he's had in a very solid conference has been fantastic. Obviously NCST will be after him hard, but not every coach is dying to return to their alma mater.

A good AD should be able to serve as his own search firm. We have one in Whitman. I trust him to make the best possible decision for us.

I'm pretty sure most of the fans on this forum would give at least 90% of the recommendations that a search firm would give...and for a heck of a lot less money.

A search firm got us Josh Whitman.

Of course, not having a search firm probably would have gotten us Josh Whitman 5 or 6 months sooner.

Hey. You try hauling Walton and Lanier up and down the floor for 48 minutes! Surely you know that. And stop calling me Shirley. Picked a bad night to give up old movie references.

God bless you. POTD.

False. A committee of Illinois alumni, athletes, etc was created to help find the next AD. Huge difference

Keatts could turn out great but he's not going to generate one once of interest to the casual fan if hired.

I hope Josh goes all in for Marshall. If he declines, go all in for Archie. I'm off the Cuonzo train.

Sorry back to topic, I wonder if our new Coach is Already in the field of 68? Please tell me more about Monty Williams. Believe it or not, I seem to have slept through his name and background being mentioned.

That ship has sailed.... quite some time ago actually
