I am less of a fan of many of the names mentioned on this thread, but as I have mentioned in previous posts, I'd take a chance with someone like Jeff Capel before I'd take the mild flavor of the week approach. I think we need a dynamic recruiter, someone on who can not only deal with the prominent HS/AAU programs but embrace the recruiting challenge right away.

I'm not disagreeing but, I want a coach. Every day and twice on Sunday. Exes and Oh's.
I want to watch exciting, competitive basketball and I don't give a flying frogs arse if it's with three and four star recruits.

Just give me someone who can keep this class intact and move on. 3 top candidates to choose from with many more to come. Regardless keep Walker and go after Smith hard.

They had a special Saturday edition of the Tay and Jay show and Jeremy Werner said that Archie Miller has a list of schools he would leave for and Illinois isn't one of them. He has said this before, but who knows what happens if the $$$$$ are right.

$, new facilities, decent roster, very good recruiting class and new administration. Let's see how great of a salesman we have on our side in Josh Whitman.

Sure, if those two things were independent, nobody would, but you are not going to out-coach your way consistently to the top of the B1G without great talent. Having a dynamic recruiter is a necessary, though not sufficient condition.

I wonder what people think about Jeff Van Gundy? I hear he's ready to coach again.

I'm not suggesting that they haven't had "talent", but Wisconsin has been doing it for a decade without a lot of four and five star talent.

They've sure had their share of very good talent, independent of rankings. But Bo Ryan is certainly a coaching example who will be hard to replicate. If it was easier, there would be many more examples rather than people having to bring up the same one example every time.

Illinois has had their share of good coaches, but if you look at history and Illini talent in periods when we were consistently good, e.g., 80s and late 90's/first part of part of 2000's, the talent level was at a whole different level.

You can certainly try to become the exception where you do consistently win at Illinois with less talent, but better grab a snickers.

Agreed and it's no coincidence that our most talented teams were our most successful.

For one I wouldn't touch Capel. Plus the duke coaching tree guys are all gunning for that gig anyway. No reason to get in the middle of that.

Absolutely. I just view their turnaround as more coaching than recruiting.
I have no illusions of obtaining a Bo Ryan clone.
I mean unless Bo wants to un-retire!:D

Yes, and it is not only individual years. You look at the collective talent, independent of just rankings, in periods when Illinois was consistently very good (i.e., 80s and 99-05) and the talent level was at a whole different level. Last 12 years? With the exception of 2010-11, the talent level has comparatively been a lot lower.

I think a team can have a good year here and there with less talent, when stars align and special chemistry develops, but if we want to start consistently competing in the upper echelon of the B1G, we need a talent upgrade.

Totally irrelevant IMO. If you want to tell me that Capel would be so good at Illinois that he'd become the front runner at Duke when Coach K retires, I'd say sign him up right now.

As I have said many times, if a coach is very successful at Illinois, he will always have overtures from the top programs (e.g., Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, UNC, etc.). That risk or fear (of leaving) is really irrelevant IMO. I'd welcome such success and risk with open arms.

If Archie is in play you push all the chips to the middle!!! I would, however, be surprised if he is in play.

How different is it with JW at the helm. It is amazing that I am expecting to be shocked in a good way with this hire.

I hope to be soon saying:

"We got WHO - Him really?!?!"

instead of

"Who the h*** is that??#*!"

Top Five (according to sources in Chicago). Probability based on availability, price, willingness to leave current program, and affinity for the Illinois job compared to other options.

1. Kevin Keatts
2. Archie Miller
3. Tony Bennett
4. Donnie Tindall
5. Gregg Marshall

I actually thought it was a joke the last time he was brought up.

My source says that there's a lot of heat surrounding the Jackson/Wooden co-HC scenario. Apparently some issues to resolve with Wooden's family before anything official.

But he hasn't been good at Duke.

I think Chris Mack could be lured for the kind of cash that will apparently be offered.

For the kind of cash we are offering, it better not be Mack.

And I like Mack.

Whitman represents Illinois so well. Well spoken and has empathy and pride for our school. Lots of respect for John Groce and all the staff for the last 5 years. I think he will look back and learn from his mistakes on the court and hopefully do well at the next school. He has the right values and behaviors off the court and probably has been a great influence for our student athletes. Just too bad he couldn't notch out more wins on the court. He is still on my list of Illini Basketball folks that I'd like to meet one day.

Ok 1 week from today the new Illini coach is.... Cuonzo Martin. Just a guess and will look back to see if I was right or wrong. Everyone lets see your pick, not your wish. Lets have some fun with it and see who hits it.
