The biggest thing is that for a process like this with enormous media interest, search firms are SUPER leaky.
If you're searching for a smaller program (or the many non-sports contexts in which search firms operate) where the best candidates may not be as obvious and where the logistical advantage of being able to set up interviews and other background work discreetly and efficiently is a big deal, these folks to great work.
Jamming what search firms do into the major conference revenue sport coaching search world is a square peg in a round hole. You've got the money and the resources to do your own legwork, a good AD should be thoroughly appraised of the talent landscape, and discretion and secrecy are not the same thing, and search firms routinely fail at the latter.

If we somehow hired Donovan I'd literally mess myself with happiness.
Not a fan, a good coach, but not a good fit at Illinois IMO.
Not that they've all been seriously discussed, but honestly, I bet the names of every single P5 coach are somewhere in this thread.

LOL...the NCAA would enforce things on him here they let go in Kentucky. He'd be moving from the privileged part of town to the bad part of town...Cops (NCAA) are different in the bad part of town.
IMO -

3. Donovan would be a Grand Slam - but he is not a P5 guy anymore. He would be THE guy that is worth whatever it takes. My 2 big of a dream so no way it happens guy. Of course we have JW so I expect the announcement on Wednesday via Twitter. (I wish)

I won't get my hopes up, but Donovan is at least more plausible than I first thought. OKC as an organization seems like it peaked and is going to wallow in mediocrity for a bit. Might legitimately be looking for a change. I'd just be really surprised if we were that change.
Rumor was that he was interested in us way back when. Of course then he went & won like 2 or 3 games at Florida. I think that is part of what fuels the hope. I don't care if the rumors were true or not I want to believe. Honestly, I don't see it happening.

donovan signed up for durant/westbrook/annual conference finals, so i wouldn't be surprised if he was looking for a way out of that. but to illinois, probably not
