Good point

If Gregg Marshall is ever going to be annoyed enough to leave Wichita, it's after getting a 10 seed with a 30-4 team.
[/B]

So now we are grasping at straws thinking a Coach with a 30-4 record is so annoyed with a 10 seed he would come here- PLEASE

I wonder if having a 30-4 season and being rewarded with a 10 seed makes Gregg Marshall think twice about staying at Wichita State.

Edit: Looks like Robert via S&C beat me to it. I'm more optimistic about that being an outside possibility, though.

Just curios. In whose opinion is the Illinois head basketball coaching job one of the top 20 jobs in the country?

1. Basketball history and tradition
2. Fertile recruiting grounds
3. B1G conference & BTN
4. Good resources and newly renovated facilities
5. Good fan following
6. Good/great academic institution

Is Illinois one of the top 20 programs currently? I have argued that it is not. But the job is still plenty attractive. 50 college basketball jobs better than Illinois? No way.

Kaplan is everything people say Dan Bernstein is, a total know-nothing blowhard.

For example, in this instance, discussing the coaching jobs of other schools is absolutely not sufficient for termination for cause.

I mean... I think technically if they found out a coach was interviewing around, they could fire him. Incredibly unlikely for such a thing to happen given how public of a situation it'd be.

That said, like Whitman mentioned in the presser, you want to be respectful of other coaches in their current roles.

Don't forget that Kaplan was "friendly" with Bruce Weber, and used him as an unnamed source in some of his Illinois stories.

Fire him without cause and pay him his buyout, sure. They can do that whenever.

But firing them for cause? No chance. Even if the contracts said that explicitly (and I've never seen one that does), such a provision would have a lot of trouble in court, depending on the state.

Thoughts on John Thompson III as possible candidate? Been saying for weeks he would be in my top 3

Bernstein has always been right about Illinois, people here are just too scared to admit it. He was right about Beckman and people here refused to admit it until it was too late. If Illinois were to turn it around, he'll be the first one praising the University.

We did not fire a coach on a hot seat to throw a golden parachute to another coach on a hot seat. [Applies to many other coaches]

1. Why wouldn't he take a phone call? Wichita State just got slighted (again), and Illinois is one of the top 20 jobs in the country.

2. It's legal to smoke where I'm at, so what business of yours is it if and what I'm smoking? :)

I want to go to there.

He has shown himself to be a lousy head coach who is only where he is because of who is daddy is. John Thompson Jr. is not an Illinois legend, so we should not appease him by giving his son a job he doesn't deserve.

So we might see a potential candidate first-hand if we beat Valpo. That could be interesting.

In the land of the Nittany Lion
Maryland is in College Park, an inside-the-beltway suburb of DC. My wife got her doctorate there. MD is very expensive to live (though an income in the millions takes the edge off that), and the area is crowded. On the other hand, well, there's so much to see and do in DC that you could "do something" every day and never run out of attractions, etc. I know people who love the DC metro area, even like living in the District. If you have money. You don't think those Washington lobbyists are living poor, do you?

Rutgers is in Piscataway. New Jersey is expensive for nice places, and there are very nice places in New Jersey. It's expensive for less nice places. Again, if you like city stuff, Piss Cat Away is a suburb of the Big Apple. Like that? You'll love Rutgers, especially for three or four mil. A lot of people love living in New Jersey. It's not all tank farms. Not at all. But too many people for me, even in the nicer towns, even if I could afford the real estate. (And if you're from Illinois, New Jerseyites think of you as a hick. Actually, anywhere west of the Delaware River qualifies you as a hick. And this from people who think wearing sweatpants as daywear is a major fashion statement.)

Lovie seems, by all accounts, to love the CU area, and with his income, he can live like King of the Prairie if he wanted. CU doesn't have a lot of attractions--though being a college town, attractions often come to town--but Chicago is only a couple hours away, and there's a lot to do there. CU is a great place to live, not a lot to visit for.

Yes, Madison is very nice. Summer there is nice too, especially if it comes on a weekend when you can enjoy it.

Nothing Americans love more than a listicle, and nothing college sports fans love more than arguments about which program is "bigger", but making a ranked order for these purposes is really, really dumb.

Illinois is clearly not Kentucky or Kansas, and clearly not Washington State or Boston College. Everyone understands that, we can just leave it there.

No candidate we will ever approach will go "Oh, sorry Josh, I love the pitch but I've got you down as the #21 job in the country and I'm waiting for an offer on a Top 13 job." It's meaningless.

You people are smoking some strange weed if you think Marshall is on the candidate list. Yes, Whitman would love to hire him, but he isn't taking Illinois phone call. A complete joke to say otherwise. Stop talking about him, it will NEVER, EVER happen.

He may not take the job but he will listen.

Just last week he talked about the frustration of having to win your league to get a bid. Then he gets a 10 seed at 30-4. If he went 30-4 at Illinois, he would get a one seed. Illinois in the BT is a better job than WSU in the MVC. Just depends if he is ready to move. Illinois will offer him a fortune and he will listen.

He will not be a candidate. He has lost any luster he once had.
