Is Keatts still in play?

It's no Archie / Marshall / other tier A - but it's still something we could get behind I believe.

Per some boosters, seems we have fallen a bit too far as a program to convince the legit candidates to climb us out. And before someone asks, I'm the guy that called JT / SLU fiasco post-commitment like 3 months before

I believe you but all it takes is just one to say yes. Still holding out hope

Marshall will be 61 years old in 7 years. UNC will only consider a Carolina Man (same with Duke and the Coach K tree), Cal isn't going anywhere at UK unless the NCAA goes nuclear on them (same with Self at KU).

Indiana seems like a good fit to me. I have always guessed that that would be their guy if they fire Crean this year.

But if they don't, and Marshall has his eye on the exit door (knowing that he's one bad year away from not having any of these options anymore), the clearly lower "ranked" Illinois job starts looking pretty tantamount to the same thing.

It's not really about us. It's about Marshall. If he hasn't reached the epiphany about Wichita State's limitations yet, or if he's just accepted them, then he ain't coming.

I struggle to see any coach having an ego that allows them to ponder the possibility that it could be falling apart. But I don't disagree with the rest of your analysis.

Oh, the bad year would never be their fault, they're all coaching superstars. But coaches are keenly aware of how much of what they do is beyond their control, that's where the control-freak mentality comes from, the insecurity of having your seven-figure job resting on the shoulders of a bunch of immature kids, imperfect refs, fragile ACL's, and all the rest of it.

Haven't heard much on who the "backups" are just yet, but seems like Whitman may also see how things play out in the tourney with a few of em first and use that time to gauge interest from other non-traditional candidates (e.g. NBA etc)

Oh, so you're going to stick it out past the first unsourced, unsubstantiated rumor 24 hours into the process when no real communication has taken place?

How brave.

I don't mean to make fun, but we're in the fun house mirror now folks, everyone needs to take a chill pill about anything we hear from now until the ink is dry.

I wouldn't have a problem with Keatts to be honest.

Gonna be Cuonzo, imo

Gonna be Cuonzo, IMO, I'm cool with that. It's actually a great fit. He could own the St Louis area. The fact that he reportedly wants it so badly is a great thing.

My problem with Cuonzo is that I don't think he can coach. I'm sure he can recruit, but his coaching skills don't impress me.

I dont believe we fired a coach who couldn't coach in order to hire another coach that couldn't coach.

Starting to get the same feeling. Just hope we can save some money on his salary and really open up the pocket book for some top assistants. I'd guess Webster and Walker are a lock and spend big on the other positions.

But what fun is this board without ledge jumping?

Rutgers is in Piscataway. New Jersey is expensive for nice places, and there are very nice places in New Jersey. It's expensive for less nice places. Again, if you like city stuff, Piss Cat Away is a suburb of the Big Apple. Like that? You'll love Rutgers, especially for three or four mil. A lot of people love living in New Jersey. It's not all tank farms. Not at all. But too many people for me, even in the nicer towns, even if I could afford the real estate. (And if you're from Illinois, New Jerseyites think of you as a hick. Actually, anywhere west of the Delaware River qualifies you as a hick. And this from people who think wearing sweatpants as daywear is a major fashion statement.)

I've never heard a New Jerseyan refer to themselves as a New Jerseyite. Much like almost no one from Chicago says they are from Chicagoland or the Windy City. The other thing is that you don't hear people from the North Jersey suburbs saying that they are New Yorkers, while you will hear a lot of Chicago suburbanites say that they are "from Chicago".

The industrial part of Jersey that you see in the beginning of "The Sopranos" is a small part of the whole state. There are still plenty of farms in South Jersey, and even some still left in Central Jersey. Those parts remind me of the Midwest.

North Jerseyans tend to view South Jerseyans as hicks or Pineys. It would not surprise me that Central Jerseyans feel the same way.

Depending on how you look at this map, its either humorous or offensive. I thought it was funny if a bit off about the area surrounding Camden, which is very nice, while Camden is the East Coast version of Detroit and East St. Louis

I think we're a hire away from getting the type of coach everyone on message boards pines for. Just don't see the stars aligning like they did for football.

beggars cant be choosers.

Saying Cuonzo can't coach really isn't fair. Is he an elite coach? Hasn't shown that yet and maybe won't but You don't win the Missouri Valley, get 2nd in SEC and 3rd in PAC 12 without some ability.

You don't win 60% of your games in those 3 conferences without being able to coach a bit

Getting back to the topic at hand, I'd be down with getting Bennett or Hoiberg. Do I realistically think Bennett will leave? No. He's building something that could be very special at Virginia, and I doubt he will want to leave. Then again, given enough $$, maybe he would.

I don't know if its the six million posts about Keatts, but I"m starting to think that maybe he might not be the worst choice. That being said, he's still not my first choice.

Here's a name I haven't seen yet:

@KendallG13
Just talked to my good friend Sam Mitchell. Former NBA Coach of The Year! He's interested in the Illini. We should be interested too.

Also, it makes me queasy to think of hiring anyone with the stink of he shall remain nameless on them. So I can't really support Cuonzo.

I've been trying to tell you guys for a month now that if a coaching change was to take place that for an unseen surprise aka Lovie, that Cuonzo is going to be the next coach at Illinois. Now !!!!! all you want but no top tier coaches want to roll the dice here. FACT. He will keep the class intact, keep Walker and will make inroads in Chicago not seen since Jimmy Collins. He has street cred in Chicago.
