Am I the only one that doesn't get the infatuation with former players? I want the best possible staff we can bring in, I don't care what uniform they wore in college.

You are not the only one. Illinois fans are insane with this small minded thinking that we need ex players or grads or "people that truly love the University". It's absolutely nuts

Not saying it didn't. It's likely Woj heard the rumors and inquired, and the story is totally legit.

I'm just saying, I wouldn't put it past Josh to throw everyone off the heavily rumored scent (with the help of his new coach) in order to make a Lovie-esque splash with his announcement.

Ok, done with my conspiracy theory. :thumb:

I'm with you. It's sort of "killdeer" like. :thumb:

Do we really think a coach would pass up a chance to coach his alma matter in exchange to coach at Illinois?

Do you recall the pic of Archie's wife and nephew tweeting themselves flashing Wolfpack gang sign? That's either a giveaway or cruel teasing of the NC State fans.

Or it has nothing to do with NC State and has everything to do with Arizona.

Archie has good as he was, never played on a team that finished higher than 5th in conference..

I think he is smart enough to realize how tough it was then to win and how tough it still will be....that job is probably top 3-5 worst in Power conference period. HIGH expectations, recruiting battles, unforgiving fans (yes us too), and constant middle of the pack results when MORE will always be wanted....NO WAY he goes back....that is a coaching death sentence. Valvano had it at the peak....never will it get there again.

Mizzou just paid 80k for a search firm. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for them to hire someone. I think Whitman has it right that he isn't using a search firm and will end up with the better coach.

They need to pay out 80,000 to get Martin, Crean name on paper or I think Kermit Davis would be a great fit for them.

I'm not familiar enough with Nc State to completely agree with you, but those are all good points. He can't be at Dayton forever. Do you think he's waiting for Matta to retire?

I'd be happy if he came here, but it just feels like a long shot.

Not following. How does a Wolfpack sign have anything to do with Arizona?

I understood it to mean that the Wolfpack and Wildcat hand signs are similar, but a Google search shows the Wildcats as either a "C" or oddly enough "the shocker". So, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've not seen any of those in Tucson. It's typically a C with the thumb and forefinger of the right hand and the other 3 fingers sticking out to look like a W. From the other side it's WC.

Among the guys I see as bona fide options right now

1. Keatts
2. Musselman
3. Capel (not getting enough mention)
4. Jankovich
5. Wade
6. Cuonzo
7. McDermott

I'm obviously very interested in the Archie/Marshall/Buzz group, but if I don't get hot and heavy interest immediately, I wouldn't waste a ton of effort trying to beg. Same with any continued Monty pursuit.

If Steve Prohm were interested I think he'd be right behind that top group. Larry Krystowiak would be more in the Jankovich range. Other sitting P5 guys, keep your ear to the ground and see what happens.

I still like Ben Jacobson, but I just can't see that being viable right now. Kermit Davis is a good coach, but not for us.

That's where I'm at.

I like this list. I'd flip the top 2, but the margin is thin. And I think either has great potential if we don't get one of the unlikely guys.

State fan here, and I did just kind've wanted to come by and counter a few of the points you have made.

-Yep, there is absolutely high expectations, as there should be with any school with our history playing on Tobacco Road. I mean, we have been to the Sweet Sixteen twice in the past six years with a coach that was notorious throughout college basketball as being a poor Xs and Os guy. But to say it is a top 3-5 worse power job (especially knowing what State is willing to offer the next coach) is just absolutely off-base.

-One thing State has done over the past handful of years is show how well you can recruit here. Gottfried pulled in two Top 5 classes in his six years at State (unfortunately you have to be able to coach those said recruits) and regularly was the second best recruiter in the state behind K. I believe Gottfried's classes were a higher average ranking in his time at State than Roy's were at UNC (although that did not mean anything on the court, it showed how someone could absolutely recruit to State).

-Our fans are portrayed by the national media as expecting too much. There are so many myths regarding this. Our fans expect a coach to be able to come here and build a program and maintain that program. We are not asking for a conference championship every year, but we do believe a coach should consistently be in the NCAA Tournament every year and not be below .500 in Years 5 and 6 (especially in Year 6 when this was Gott's most talented team). Another rumor to debunk is Herb Sendek was never fired from State, he left on his own.

-In regards to Archie, one thing that is well known is that he apparently has coveted the Ohio State job. Well, another thing that is known is that he also coveted the NC. State job back in 2011 during our last coaching search (and I know Doyel had a similar tweet just the other day saying he had heard he still does somewhat covet the NC. State job), but at that time he had yet to have any head coaching experience. As to what will happen this go round, we will see. But there are definitely some other great candidates along with Archie that are on the board.

Just a few things I wanted to come by and say. I wish you guys well in this coaching search, and think both schools have great things to offer potential candidates.

Also, in regards to that "wolf" sign, yes that was an NC. State sign. Archie's wife is also a State alum and her family still lives in NC.

Do we really think a coach would pass up a chance to coach at his alma matter in a great conference in exchange to coach a flailing Illinois team?

I want us to find the best person possible, but I can't think of a scenario where Miller is coming here.

Maybe doesn't want to deal with Debbie Yow.

Absolutely will do. Created this account months ago before State and Illinois played and you guys became the beginning of the end of the Gottfried era (thank you for that).

I appreciate the welcomes and hope to talk basketball with everyone in the future.
