I want to put Marshall in this, but there is something about him that I can't put my finger on. He got guys like Baker and VanFleet in the league, but I don't know if he can get high level recruits. Additionally, his temper and gestures are quite the turnoff even though he wins a good amount of games.

Marshall has a Crean-like awkwardness coupled with arrogance and a temper. However, he's an incredible coach.

Buzz Williams, Dan Hurley, and Eric Musselman are all similar in that they have outsize personalities and are prone to histrionics and cringe-inducing public displays. They all have a Bruce Pearl vibe in different shades.

Cuonzo, Keatts, and Archie Miller are all likable personalities. I went through and watched various interviews and press conferences with each of them. Miller is like a more stoic John Groce maybe. Cuonzo seems like an earnest but very pleasant guy. Keatts is definitely the most engaging of the trio. He actually reminds me quite a bit of Bill Self.

With as much as every possible candidate has been discussed on this board, no one qualifies as a dark horse candidate anymore. Majerle's not a new one.

If it's dark horse candidates with no mentions you are looking for, there are Levelle Moton and John Becker. Not suggesting them for any other purpose than this criteria so don't shoot me. I don't actually know much about either one other than that they have built successful low D1 programs under the radar.

That's a fact. When Steve Masiello makes someone's top 3 list they've all been covered.

My dark horse would be Pat Kelsey from Winthrop. He's been mentioned in this thread, but only about twice and in an off-hand way. He's going to be a good one in a few years. If we somehow hired him this year, everyone would be ultra disappointed, but I'd be going, "not at all what I expected, but this could actually work out fine."

That said, not going to happen. If Archie leaves I expect Kelsey to be a top candidate for the Dayton job (midwest roots; played at Xavier).

This right here. I just don't see these type guys being Whitman type guys. I can't see Whitman being on board with the histrionic ahole type guys.

I was in the Musselman camp for a while until I saw his sideline demeanor in the conference championships.

I think there's a reason he's moving on every two years.

Would you want someone who operates heavily in the grey if it meant we got good recruits and won games...or does integrity really matter to you?

I suppose everybody has to get down into the weeds to a certain extent. But since I've already advocated for John Wooden to come back from the beyond and coach the Illini, this would be my take: I don't want players who never go to class. I don't want players who have others taking tests for them. I don't want grades being fixed. I don't want late night entertainment with the opposite sex being arranged by school recruiters. I don't want school administrators ignoring terrible things going on right under the noses (hello, Baylor). And if players are attracted by these kinds of things, I don't want them on my team. I also don't want some pillar of virtue like Joe Paterno held up as such a saint only to find out he's covering up horrible acts that went on for years. If getting that dirty is what it takes for the Illini to become a so-called Blue Blood, forget it. Win with honor. Lose with dignity. Never win with shame. If the Ilini have to lose with honor, I can respect that more than dirty wins.

Yeah, but is there any gnarled old greaseboard curmudgeon in that group? You need that guy on your staff.

Webster would be a lock, but of the other two, I would think Tim O'Toole would be the other guy coming, with Walker taking Jones' spot. O'Toole has worked under Boeheim and Coach K and was a head coach in his own right for many years. That's your old head who has seen it all and can keep the trains running on time.

What type of leverage do you think Whitman might have in talking Martin into both Walker and a guy like O'Toole for his staff? Or even one or the other? If Cuonzo has the Mizzou gig in his back pocket, I don't see much. Being old and wise myself, I appreciate a grizzled veteran, Xs and Os type guy, but I'm guessing JW would back off after Walker, if he even can get him in. JMO.

I'd take Keatts and Martin over Kelsey heck even Jankovich as well. He seems like a pretty good coach and good 40-14 record in conference the past 3 years. He might need another year or two before going P5.

Totall Agree. Kelsey would be like 12th on my list. Just playing the "not really mentioned yet in this thread" game.

I am assuming you know about Sam Gilbert then too? Wooden had his fair share of behind the scenes dealings that helped him acquire as much talent as he did.

Note that I did say SOME amount of getting into the weeds might be necessary. I do think it's ridiculous that these guys don't get paid something decent. I'm sorry that the Northwestern lawsuit for player pay and other issues didn't render a better outcome for the players. The top programs are Quasi-Pro programs anyway. We all know that. Make it fair pay for the players.

Also, you gotta get Timmy O'Toole out of that well first.
