it still took him 4 years to get those results. I think he probably even got better as a coach in numerous facets. Dont' be surprised if Martin achieves that at Mizzou.

If Martin achieves a top 10 kenpom four years in a row at Mizzou I would be very surprised.

Am I missing something? Seems like mizzou was plan b for the porters. Isn't it possible they made it clear that the next Mizzou coach could have them in a package deal? And Counzo jumped on it (possibly over an Illini offer)? That doesn't in any way mean that Cuonzo/Porter package was available to us. Isn't it likely that the Porter package would've just been offered to the eventual MZ coach?

What about his stops at Tennessee and Cal showed he was progressing towards a top 10 team? Do you really think, looking at Cal's roster that they are on their way to being a top team in college basketball?

That seems the most likely to me at this point.

Having JW as our AD is like having the job myself. Top choice Lovie and top choice Tony. Go big or go home! The return will be immediate and significant. We're not Northwestern; we're not Nebraska; we're not Minnesota -- we're ILLINOIS! We can't settle.

Monty Williams, Tony Bennett, Archie Miller and Gregg Marshall will not be the next coach at Illinois. The longer it takes for that to be clear to you all, the more painful the memory of this search is going to be, the more damage is going to be done to Josh Whitman's credibility, and the deeper the cynicism and fatalism of this fanbase is going to go.

Which, y'know, whatever. Winning will cure all of that so fast it will make your head spin. But it's frustrating from tonight's vantage point.

If Zo has a polonged multi year run of top 10 teams, I will be the first to come back here and admit that I was wrong... which reminds me sorry for doubting that Trump would win in November. I'm probably over due on some other predictions... long story short guys, my track record is awful.

Exactly. Didn't want to play for Kim

You're very negative. And don't respond that you're being realistic. Most of your posts are usually negative.

the same thing that bennett showed theyd go from an nit appearance to a sweet 16. fact is, cuonzo has never been in a p5 place more than 3 years. I'm not saying Martin was my first choice. I just don't think Bennett is a sure thing and I think this message board undermines the fit that is necessary to be successful at Illinois.

Gotta say, he's not the only one that feels this way.

The coaching search thread from 5 years ago should be required reading.

I am very negative. And I am sometimes wrong. But I'd like to think I've learned at least a little something being such a hardcore coaching carousel nerd all these years.

That's honestly the thing I'm most excited about in this process. We've done the coaching candidates thing on the Illini internet, literally, for like 16 of the last 20 team-seasons for football and basketball, never once having a moment when both sports weren't in fire-the-coach crisis mode.

So long as this process doesn't spin completely out of control, that ends in a week or two, for a period of at minimum like two years.

I can't wait. I will not miss this. Let's do sports for awhile.

I was with you until Marshall. Pretty reasonable home-run scenario that he ends up here.

Bennett is about as sure as it gets. What he has done without McDonald's All-Americans on the roster in the ACC is nothing short of amazing.

Bennett's teams have an identity. I miss Illinois basketball having an identity.

Like the day he tweeted we were getting Rick George. And the day he tweeted we were getting Cliff Alexander. And the day he tweeted we were getting Kevin Sumlin.

It gets clicks.
I had no context to know what to make of it, but I thought his sources were well regarded. Doesn't matter. I assume we have until the first of the week before anything concrete happens that we will know about.

I agree with this. Also that winning cures all. But I also agree that maybe you're just a little negative. The fact of the matter is, unless we wanted somebody off the waiver wire, we're going to have to wait until at least the first round of the tournament has played out. I'm trying to take some of Groces advice about not getting too high or too low. Just because he didn't win games doesn't mean he was 100% wrong about everything. Just because we don't have our coach yet doesn't mean we're going to be disappointed in who we eventually hire.
