Monty Williams with Anthony Grant, Jamall Walker, and Jerrance Howard. Get back in on Tugs Bowen?
I will take that staff.

Ha, it's already leaking.
Also, I have no information about the timing of the announcement, just that he's being hired on Monday. Maybe they wait until Tuesday morning to officially announce? At this rate, it'll be leaking all over the place by Monday, though.
Of course their teams are playing each other as we speak so at least one will be available Monday.
Everyone seems to think the only thing keeping Alford from going to IU is the big check IU would have to write UCLA to break Alford's contract.
The best basketball minds on the planet earth continually go to bat for this guy. What other endorsement would one need to be convinced he's a capable coach for Illinois?
Wow. Alford's buyout is $8mil, and Crean's is $4mil. I did not factor that into my opinion of Alford to UCLA.
I can't wrap my brain around the idea that Monty Williams is anything but a grand slam hire.
It's like an hour late, but this one just occurred to me: "No Jank You"

I imagine IU would've reached out to Alford before canning Crean. There is no way they didn't. I'm not saying a deal is hammered out, but I will be absolutely shocked if he doesn't take the IU job days after UCLA's season concludes.
Cue Obelix saying this doesn't happen.
Wichita State down at the half. Rescind Marshall's offer.
And down to Archie, to boot. Better double our offer to Archie.
Come on guys
Has anyone else noticed the "insiders" are saying that the JW already has his coach AND all of Mark Smith's recent tweets are pro Illini AND he was just spotted in Illinois shorts? Maybe all of these things are just coincidence OR maybe JW already has his coach and the recruits are on board?
With that said, my nut cup is on
Thinking about it more, landing Monty would only increase my confidence that Whitman would hire the right guy again should the coach move on to the NBA
The optimistic side of me says this is good news. Means Whitman has a coach he wanted more than Keatts. So I'm expecting either Monty, Archie, Bennett, or GM to be the next coach of Illinois.
It does not happen
I think the timing of Crean firing had more to do with IU hoping Mizzou voluntarily took him off their payroll (they were some rumors). I think it was no coincidence that as soon as Cuonzo took the Mizzou job, Crean was fired.
On Alford, I do not know him personally, but actually know someone close to him. Quite a long time ago, I was told that Alford did not want to come back to the B1G, there were some bad feelings from his time at Iowa and he had felt that B1G did not support him. But time cures all wounds, so you never know.
Money is the only reason I could see Alford leaving. I think he's making 2.5. Otherwise ucla is a much better gig.
I'd rather picture our AD working diligently on finding our next coach rather than wasting time reading this thread.
That would take a little investigation to be sure. Yes, UCLA is a more legendary program than Indiana, but there's something to be said for the fact that they play on the west coast late at night. I know that sounds like it's not a big deal, but the way recruits see teams is 9/10 times on television.
Considering the last banner Indiana hoisted was in 1987, yes, UCLA is a better program. The question is whether or not Alford is a better fit at either.
