That's hard to fathom. In a down year Indiana and Illinois both far outdraw UCLA.

Overall, basically the entire Pac-12 has very poor basketball attendance at schools not named Arizona.

Is there speculation as to why that is? I'm sorry to derail this a little bit, but UCLA matters to IU matters to us.

Just a general lack of interest in Pac-12 basketball as compared to B10 basketball. Just a guess. More to do in LA in the winter than in Champaign or Bloomington.

I'm pretty sure if memory serves me, whitesxfan2012 is almost always accurate with his info. This is very very interesting. And encouraging.

I think LA sports fans just have so many other options that it's hard for UCLA to really be a huge draw, even when they are a superb team. USC is a "football school." Oregon is a "football school" at this point but certainly seems like they may develop a fervent basketball fanbase in time. The rest just historically have been "okay" at basketball. I guess I don't really know much about attendance at Washington.

I'll start jumping for joy after an official announcement is made. That being said, I do feel better with the general vibes out there.

One word posts make me anxious. I hope I'm wrong, but this feels like a Quintana trade discussion.

Ahhh good stuff, was pretty sure we were going to end up with Drew 24 hours ago. Monty was my 1A/1B guy with Miller.

Same reason the Pac12 Network has struggled. Small fans bases, lack of interest.

Yeah, the Pac-12 Network still hasn't worked out their contract with DirecTV. That really rankles a lot of the people here in Arizona who want to watch every game and can't.

It's amazing how fickle the board is. Majority says they want a guy, then as soon as smoke picks up around that candidate, it's all second guessing. People were disappointed when Monty apparently backed out, now rumors picking up again and people are coming out of the woodwork to say no good.

There are CERTAINLY some cons and some unknowns to Monty Williams, but it would be naive to think that guys like Miller and Marshall, and even Bennett come in without their own cons. No one has had great success recruiting Chicago, and an ex NBA coach who coached and mentored Anthony Davis and some of the BIGGEST NBA stars is a huge get for our school if we can get him.

Even if Monty would somehow leave for an NBA job, bringing him in raises our credibility. Everyone that thinks Marshall or Miller are sure thing slam dunk hires can look at Shaka Smart as evidence that those moves don't always pay immediate dividends. In the long term, I think Monty helps us on MANY MANY fronts.

ILLINI IN NE

Omaha,Ne.
I only know about Monty Williams from what I have read on this thread. I'll be happy with whoever Whitman chooses. Just wondering why Williams would want to coach the Illini. Any guesses?

Speaking first hand, its tough to follow national sports on the west coast due to timezone and traffic. To catch a 7pm CT / 5pm PT game some people would need to leave work 2 hours early - not realistic.

Also, local weekday games don't have attendance. Leave work early, sit in traffic there, sit in traffic back, get home later, etc. Too much sacrifice. No joke, you can get weekday Angels tickets on Stubhub for < $5 day of game.

For local weekend games, its half the day gone just to watch a game. That's why USC has such great tailgating - people just make a full day out of it.

Welcome back old friend.

I'm all for this fun, as Long as everyone understands that this board and a twitter account a few weeks old created all of this out of thin air.

So if you're disappointed when it's not Monty, or use the phrase "nut punch", or freak out and have a meltdown, the rest of us have the right to point and laugh.

But I'm not gonna tell you not to have fun, as long as we are all on the same page. So for now: Weeeeeeeeeeee
