This is why we need hires by mid next week. Gotta go hard after transfers for the D.

Not sure how informed/relevant the Twitter account here is, but...

That would be a pretty shaky DC hire. But a pretty solid DB coach.

Not a bad hire if true. Experienced and a part of some good defenses. I think his Safety experience pairs well with BB's front 7 experience. Don't necessarily want him calling plays or being more than secondary coach, but I am guessing he is probably the DC to lure him away from FL.

He just got fired at FL

Maybe a safeties coach and a corners coach? Too lazy to go back but there was talk of that former Wisconsin player joining the staff.

Seems to me that we're going to be in for another surprise when the DC is finally announced. When Bielema had to retract his very early "....We'll be playing a 3-4 defense at Illinois...." comment, I think it was obvious he had been turned down by his first choice.

(BTW, who among us had Wyoming in the "OL Assistant Coach" pool ----- and Appalachian State in the "OC" pool? Perhaps we should be looking in the direction of Idaho State, UConn or Ga Southern for our next new coach.)
I wondered same... like maybe he was talking with Rhoades but he's decided to go another direction. When we get down on the new hires we have to keep in mind all the hires we really would have preferred might have laughed into the phone before hanging up. I think we're going to see quite a bit of youth, ex-grad assistants and such looking to make a name for themselves. So BB might want to balance that with experience (older) at the coordinator positions. The waiting is starting to get old now, am I right? I want the staff announced so we can read another 30 pages of doom & gloom. I'm bored. Unrelated - Clemson's defense and all the penalties are really making them look weak tonight. Who woulda thunk?

The only way Marcus Freeman was coming to Illinois was as the head coach, and I was happy to hear Whitman interviewed him.
Dont you kinda think that Freeman is either waiting for a coordinator position under Fickster at a huge name program OR taking over the Bearcats when the HC gets hired away? Both options have to be more attractive although there's certainly no guarantee either will materialize. I see him as a bit of a gambler - he'll turn down the sure thing now for a better possibility later.

I'm not sure if he would come here to be anything other than DC. Seems like anything else would be a big step down.
If he was still at Florida, yes. If he was fired, I could see it. He was safety coach at Mississippi state before Florida.

I edited my first post. I would definitely take him as a DB coach. He also has previous Midwest ties.

How long has it been since English was a DC? Maybe he will be out new DC, but I don’t think a position coach is out of the question.

Why shaky? Broyles awards and Rivals DC of the year in 06 and did well as DC at Louisville. His issue was falling off after taking the HC spot at EMU.

Feel like he is being sent to the wolves/falling on the sword for Mullens.

So if true about Ron English, is he our dc? Co-dc? Safties or secondary coach? Hes been a dc before, mich 07-08(rich rod didn’t keep him when carr retired) louisville 08, became hc at emu until being fired for a rant in 13, took 3 years off?? and then went to be dc sjst in 16. So hes atleast called plays before so theres that.

Rather easy thing to do if he's in the process of signing on at Illinois as a secondary coach.

13-14 years ago he would have been a hot hire. I don’t know about shaky, but It would be another underwhelming hire. We increased the assistant pool to $5M to go get the people BB wanted, so to come away with an OC making 200k at App St and a DC making 440k who just got fired coaching Safeties would be the very definition of underwhelming- they might be great coaches and work out well- but it’s not the kind of hire that will excite anyone

I think most would be excited for him to be a position coach given Previous Big Ten and SEC experience, just not as DC

Kinda funny, when I googled his name he came up as a replacement possibility for Zook when he was fired. So there was a time when he was a hot commodity.

Just goes to show how much of a crap shoot the whole coaching thing is.
