The Illinois Coaching Staff Thread

#51
So, might the delay in hiring be related, in part, to giving Patterson some time to consider this big decision?

Easy for us to say he should have jumped on it when offered, but he has/had a good thing going at Trinity. Successful program, but more importantly having a positive influence on the lives of many young men, not only in football, but also in life. Not easy to leave at a moment's notice, even if college football coaching is your dream.

Maybe Lovie gave him some time, more so than usual, to think it over.

I think they weren’t going to hire a tight end coach without hiring an OC first to make sure the OC was ok with the hire

Not to be a bearer of bad news but it seems like a lot of Zona fans on different forums are pretty happy that Rod Smith is gone. Most of them are saying QB play regressed each year under him, bad throwing form, bad receiver routes, play-calling, etc.

One even said "I'm surprised he got a D1 job."

Are these just salty fans or is there some truth to it?

Mostly saltiness I think. The offensive stats don't lie and theirs were consistently very good. People here complained about Locksley, too when he left but who here wouldn't mind having him back? I mean, he was obviously good enough in Bama's eyes, and they don't suck as a program.

New coaches teleconference.
Rod Smith: There's always opportunities that come around at this time of year. It's right time and right situation.

Rod Smith: I've had several opportunities to pursue. For whatever reason, whether it be timing or family, it just wasn't the right team.

Rod Smith: RichRod was involved. We had different dynamic with co-coordinators. All of us shared our role in playcalling duties. It was different, but we made it work.

Rod Smith: I think this style of offense can work in any conference. It's about us coaches putting guys in the right position to make plays.

Rod Smith: Lovie very genuine and good person. His history precedes itself.

Rod Smith: What Lovie wants to do fits with what I want to do.

Rod Smith: I'm new to (the Illini QB situation). I know coach has talked about Cam Thomas as one of returners. Evidently, now he's the lone returner.

Rod Smith: We want a winner at QB. Want a guy that understands the dynamics of QB position.

Rod Smith: At Arizona, I recruited San Diego, Orange County and dipped into Florida.

Rod Smith: I want to be a multiple, spread-type team. I want to spread teams and force defenses to defend all 53-yards horizontally and vertically. Try to get the ball out in space to good athletes.

Rod Smith: RichRod always been very supportive. Thought Illinois would be a good program.

Rod Smith: Lovie basically told me we have to get better offensively. He's intrigued by how we move the ball and how we score points.

Rod Smith: No gimmicky name for my offense. It's a multiple-type spread. Spread takes on many different forms.

Cory Patterson: I'm just grateful for the opportunity. I'm just ready to get to work.

Cory Patterson: Telling Trinity players was the hardest thing I've had to do in my life.

Cory Patterson: I got a lot of relationships in St. Louis. I'm just looking forward to come to our city and getting some of the players to come play for the Illini.

Cory Patterson: Had a couple phone calls about other opportunities to coach in college. Coach Smith is always someone I looked up to. Not many opportunities to coach with someone with that integrity.

Cory Patterson: I want to be around good people and help change the program.

Cory Patterson: St. Louis recruiting is relationship-driven.

Cory Patterson: Thad Ward is a dog. He's a hard-working guy. We built a relationship.

Cory Patterson: Larry Boyd is one of my guys. Saw him grow up and become the person he is. He's going to be big part of us recruiting the city.

Cory Patterson: We've talked about me recruiting Indianapolis as well

The 247 Arizona board was very glowing of him

Jeremey Werner had an Arizona beat writer on his show yesterday at the beginning of his show and everything he said was the exact opposite of this. They are just salty fans. I mean, we know the type of people on team forums right....

The delay in hiring was mostly related to the Buccaneers coaching staff. There are a lot of Lovie holdovers there and everyone thought they were going to get fired. As it turned out, it looks like nobody got fired. Koetter, Bajakian, Spencer, Spicer, Borgonzi, Hoke, Polk, Steele ... pretty much the entire coaching staff is still Lovie's coaching staff.

Still think Lovie got the short end of the stick there, but TB's loss is our gain (I hope).

Paul Williams has been hired as a DB coach at the University of Houston.

I guess whatever he did wrong at Illinois wasn't bad enough to keep another team from hiring him right away.

Why was Williams fired then? I can believe it might have been a coincidence McGee gets fired for something more serious than on field issues, while Williams is fired for just that, but the timing seems strange.

Staff needed more impact recruiters. Williams provided little to nothing.

I believe one of the coaches from AZ St has strong ties with the Robertson family. I guess we could possibly swing it, though not appearing likely.

Werner mentioned on his radio show that it might be a LB coach. John Holecek would be a great addition but he seems perfectly content with his current position. A name to throw out there... Rod Wilson. He played LB under Lovie (and Hardy when he coached for Bears), served as LB coach at Charleston Southern for 3 years, and spent the past season as Assistant ST coach with Chiefs under former Lovie guy, Toub.

Holecek would be a very interesting choice - we would go from little-to-no local talent to having linchpins in both StL & Chicago recruiting

If Holecek is not interested, how about Dana Howard, Kevin Hardy or Scott Studwell. See if they are interested in helping the old alma matre. Studwell in particular would be a significant addition since he oversaw all scouting and player evaluations for the Vikings for over 20 years. He retired to get off the road. Howard and Hardy both have ties to the St. Louis area and were outstanding players.

How about we get a proven recruiting type with that last open spot for LB or DB coach
