This FB hire is unique, or at least new for somewhat new for us, in that it's the first one since, who, Mackovic? where you could argue the AD is competent and has total control and a bit of a buyer's market.

I'm putting The Football Guy and Mr. Charisma Thomas on the "unsatisfactory performance" side of the ledger, and JW's first hire was in March under not ideal circumstances.

I think he's gonna make a solid hire, sell it well, and make us proud... and in my imagination, this scenario does not include Buttlips Bielema.

On the one hand - ADs seldom get an opportunity to hire a third football coach. That would lead me to thing that JW will play it safe and hire a successful HC at a MAC-level program or maybe a major conference Offensive Coordinator who can recruit and has been coaching for 5+ years.

After LS, I don't think JW will go will the pro route.

Also, I don't think it will be a former major conference HC (Bielma).

On the other hand - LS and BU were both surprises.

Not an insider, but my gut says we hear something by Wednesday. I think JW probably has his man, but probably doesn't want to be disrespectful to Lovie hiring someone the next day. He said the Iowa game tipped the scale, so you'd have to think at a bare minimum he's been looking and doing back channel conversations for a couple weeks. But in reality I bet he's been researching for the past couple of months. JW is incredibly precise and calculated how he operates, which makes me think now that Lovie is officially out he can have official conversations with any administration people he has to talk to to get this through.

Again no inside information, just my gut.
Quite certain we heard Whitman say that he ALWAYS has an updated list (of prospective coaches) for both basketball and football. I believe he keeps them evergreen throughout the year.

Not trying to troll, but real question: how exactly does a relatively obscure NFL pedigree and three successful years attracting 5-star WRs to a national title contending alma mater suggest Hartline is the right person to lead a massive, ground-up rebuild of a perennial basement dweller? How would his particular talents and qualities, which are pretty narrowly limited to his recruiting prowess in a completely different context to what he's be dealing with at Illinois, translate to the herculean task of fixing this program? This kind of hail-mary, magic savior mentality is, frankly, sort of what got us Lovie in the first place. Name recognition! He'll adjust to the unfamiliar role! Look how successful he was doing something that won't be relevant here!
I know that this is an OSU site, but I find it interesting info...
Brian Hartline – Ohio State Buckeyes https://ohiostatebuckeyes.com/coach/brian-hartline/

I was there. Fortunately the pre game and post game festivities (still high on a long list of best tailgates) dulled the memory of arguably the most boring college game I've ever seen---and that's 60 yrs worth.

Obviously no one knows, but it could be one of those hires that transforms a program if it works out. Hartline is very well connected and would bring a lot of buzz and youthful energy to a program that hasn’t had success with older, more experienced options. So screw it, why not?

I don't understand that part. He's coached for 3 years, all at his alma mater. Who is he well connected with? The 5 stars that are debating between OSU, UGA, and Alabama?

Morehead no.....JW overdid the loyalist approach with Fahey , women's BB coach...( 30-58, 4-46 BIGS). No recruitment ability=no players to move up the bottom.

I hope we go after Billy Napier. Offensuve minded ciach that has won and dine well identifying players. My attainable choice. Doubt i get what i want though!

I agree with what a lot of you guys are saying... If JW is going to hire a guy, it needs to either be a P5 coordinator or a up-&-coming HC from a Group of 5.

No offense to anyone, but if we hire a position coach with no experience for the HC job just because he is a great recruiter, then there is an issue here...

My List/Analysis
1. Fickell – Enough said.
2. Dave Clausen (Wake Forest) – A bit out of left field, but dude has proven himself at Wake and taken them as far as he can go at a small private school. If JW pulls another Underwood, this would be my pick.
3. Liepold (Buffalo) – Proven winner/coach, but the age does concern me a bit. Give him the program for a few years and then turn it over to his groomed successor.
4. Kent State Guy – Super young, but if you give him money for a solid/good staff of coordinators & recruiting position coaches, you might have something special.

Good list!
FIckell: gotta call him and make him decline
Clausen: proven builder and winner, but I worry about the ceiling. Don't see him as a great recruiter, but seems like a solid coach. Really depends on how much he's making and how comfortable he is at Wake
Liepold: proven winner and now a builder. Strong midwest roots. Loyal coaching staff
Lewis: high ceiling, super young, exciting offense, building a program, Illinois native and B1G player

I’m Not denying recruiting for Ohio State is much easier than it would be here, but become well connected simply by recruiting for Ohio State lol. Those 5-stars have coaches, and a lot of them come from elite high school football programs. And those coaches know other coaches, and so on and so forth. I wasn’t even making a case that he SHOULD be hired, I was just mentioning what he COULD bring to the table. Do you honestly have a hard time understanding how a former NFL wideout, who coaches at Ohio State, who brings in 5-star talent might have some pretty good connections? My lord.

Hartline wants the top job at OSU someday. I have a hard time believing he wants to leave. Turned down some NFL options last year. I think we would be pleasantly surprised, especially if he can put together a staff. That said, feels like a long shot.

Didn't mean for you to take it that way. I just thought the "well connected" part made little sense based on his lack of experience and lack of exposure to other programs besides Ohio State. I was thinking of it more in line with building his staff and not strictly recruiting connections. I'm sure he has established good connections at some of the top high schools in the country.

I think hiring Scheelhaase would be ridiculous. But if Hartline is an actual candidate then Scheelhaase better have turned us down.

Sorry, I’ve read some pretty stupid stuff on here lately and I was triggered lol. Your post was actually very logical and I apologize. I’m still aboard the Leipold train myself.

IMO the most important qualification for the next head coach is that he has no adult sons.
