The Illinois Football Coaching Search

Hello guys. I haven't posted in a long time, but wanted to get in on the coaching search thread. The one advantage to being a lifelong Illini fan is we get to discuss coaching searches, as much as we do the actual games themselves.
I would be very thrilled with Malzahn (but I don't think he would come here), but could live with Leipold or Monken. Absolutely no to Bielema or Fleck.

Hoping for Bielema. He checks all the boxes of proven Big 10 winner, proven regional instate recruiter, and I think he’s put together an amazing staff. Given that Chryst is going to be at Wisconsin for a long time, I could see Bielema offering Jim Leonhard a “head coach in waiting” role to come over and be the DC. Get it done Josh.
How would that be any different than Leonhard’s current role at Wisconsin?

If our AD, who was a former Illini TE, doesn't care about winning football games, he has the wrong job. Does the senior admin not realize that a winning football team leads to more exposure, which leads to more students, which leads to a more diverse donation base? Horribly short sighted on their part.
It would be interesting to see data to know whether or not the bolded sentence is actually true or not. Regardless, having a major athletic program isn't necessarily correlated with having a successful fundraising campaign. In my opinion, the idea that the top administrators at the University "don't care very much about winning football games" is not very controversial and is likely shared by more schools than we might expect.

JW said in presser he decided after Iowa game, but didn’t tell Lovie until today. So presumably JW has had a week to reach out to potential candidates.

There has been some research on this and the results are mixed. Illinois going to the rose bowl is great for PR but probably won't raise the schools profile as much as when Gonzaga went to the final 4. People already know about U of I and what they are about so winning probably won't move the needle that much.

So, how popular is Gus with his players? I don't know anything about the man, and rumor is that JW already has his guy, prior to Gus being fired. I don't even know if Gus is a great coach or match at U of I. He wouldn't have to change his color scheme, that has to mean something, right?
1. He likely could be a little less expensive, since he is still being paid by Auburn, right? Or, did the buyout change that? Not to be cheap, but just sayin'. More money for assistants.
2. Would any of his players want to follow him?
3. After the microscope/pressure cooker of Auburn, having a 4 loss season being a bad season would get him a statue built in Champaign, no where to go but up.

30+ years ago, an operation manager was talking with me about what he would want as a next job. He wanted to go into the worse performing store in the region, knowing that he getting it to average would make him look like a hero, and making it good/great would make him a superstar. Just a little reminiscing.

Not yet "proven" --- true. But you have to admit he carries himself extremely well, he gives off a great vibe. he nailed it with his MBB hire, and he bleeds orange and blue.

Even with all of that said, very few AD's are allowed to make two consecutive football head coach hiring failures.
I agree~ he carries himself well and bleeds orange and blue~ I hope he earns the label smartest guy in the room someday~ I admit I cringe when I here that term thrown around. It’s hard to spot the smartest guy in the room because he’s usually the guy not saying anything over in the corner just soaking it in and planning the best course of action. We need some luck on a young guy hire with brains, tireless work ethic, resilience and the ability to recruit. Be Bold!

Let’s look at this another way. I’d like someone to come in and establish their own, new identity.

Therefore no to...
1) Retreads: Sumlin is in a shocking free fall. Bielema is a goof. Likely Malzahn here too (I’d listen, but likely no). Anyone who yells at people to get off their lawn.
2) Integrity: Anyone named Pitino or Petrino.
3) Former Bears coaches: Trestman. Sorry - sarcasm machine back on
5) Cannabis Options: Urban Meyer (I’ve seen it suggested).
6) too late: Tom Herman.

Targets: all of the young up and comers mentioned. 30 y.o. is preferred over 60 y.o. I’m open to the Monkens and Doerens of the world. Campbell would be a dream but wouldn’t come. He’s going really big at the next stop.

Supplemental dream hires to the new staff: Patterson on offense. Scheelhaase on offense. Holocek on defense.

Give me a hungry coach who can make it cool again to stay in state. Loved the all-Illinois OL lineup. It can be done.
I laughed out loud at “cannabis options”

Whitman: We'll move quickly, confidentially. I think those are two characteristics of any successful search.

Whitman: Think this is one of the premier open jobs. We have to find the right leader to tap into its potential.

Whitman: Will not use a search firm.

Whitman: No firm timetable. "We'll move as quickly as we can."

Whitman: Not going to rush into this decision just because of the early signing period.

Whitman: "I want to win. I want someone to come in here, win a lot of football games, do it with integrity and do it for a long time."

Whitman has used the word "integrity" a lot. Wouldn't keep your red-flag candidates very high on the list.

I think I get what you’re saying, but if they didn’t care about winning, why would they pay so much? I think I saw somewhere that Lovie was Top 20 in the nation in pay. Then I think (1) Top pay, (2) A top facility (3) Big Ten, (4) Patience and a long leash ... then why is the gig so undesirable?
Hard to recruit....a lot of big time coaches don't want to deal withthat
