I trust Football Scoop a lot, they are the best connected coaching carousel people out there, and the names they put out there were Bielema, Leipold, Monken and Clawson.

Sure sounds like it's Leipold, but if it's not him, I think the rest of that list is probably the place to look.
I don't think they mentioned interviews outside of BB though. Just guys to consider. I guess there's a lot of grey around consideration vs reaching out vs conversation vs interview, etc. though.

Back to the MAC...very underwhelming.
I understand what you mean, but the biggest knock I've seen on LL is he is in the MAC. If he is indeed hired I'm going to be cautiously optimistic that in a year or two the team will have an identity and begin to compete.

You do realize that tons of very successful P5 coaches came from the MAC, right? Examples: Urban Meyer, Nick Saban
Not to mention: Brian Kelly (Central Michigan) Brady Hoke (Ball State) Oh and....Nick Saban (Toledo)

and this is just from an article from 2014

The MAC part isn't really the thing, at least for me. It's the stuff that's missing from the resume and it's uniqueness.
1. Most MAC guys that get bigger jobs are relatively young, he's not.
2. Most MAC guys have some sort of assistant experience at a higher level, he doesn't.
3. Most MAC guys, even if young, have connections or a coaching tree to reach into for P5 assistants, he doesn't.

He has tons of HC experience, but he's risky because he's going to have to learn P5 football and recruiting on the fly, at 56 years old.

Same stuff saiid every coaching search. I just do not feel that a MAC HC who really hasn’t beaten any big teams, will have success at IL. Hope I’m wrong, but just think big boy recruiting will be too much and we are stuck at the bottom year after year.

The program is so bad that people are actually more disappointed in the coaching searching concluding with Leipold (not exciting) than 90% of the weekly results that happened in the program during the past seasons. I partially get it, this is the only opportunity for excitement and hope and people want to be blown away with an amazing hire.

Therefore... what? Hire who? Who are the great coaches without Iowa Hawkeyes tattoos on their calves knocking down Illinois' door that Whitman isn't considering?

I find it hard enough to cheer the Illini without a raging dbag on the sideline, so I'm opposed to BB.

But I take a "don't reward dbags" approach to life, which might put me in the minority on this board.

LL please.

1) Every coach has to get a start somewhere, whether it's the MAC or the Sun Belt or whatever. Coaches aren't just created fully-formed with P5 experience for all to hire.
2) The MAC-level coaches who take a step up and are successful there (e.g. Matt Campbell) are probably a bit out of our league considering the other offers they could command. We are a lateral move for those types barring some miraculous turnaround over the next several years

If JW manages to pull a rabbit out of his hat here and get someone like that, I will certainly be happy, but our football program is a harder sell to prospective coaches than our basketball program.

Give me Lance Leipold of Buffalo. I’d be thrilled with that.

I don’t want that old former chunky Badger.

As far as Jeff Monken, as a Georgia Southern alumni who was there from 2010-2014 (Monken was there from 2010-2013).....I couldn’t be mad at my two schools coming full circle. I think we would be competitive. But, let’s be real, we would never be more than a consistent team who goes to bowl games and maybe competes for a conference championship once in a blue moon.

I know most fans would be thrilled with that considering our recent history, but we should want more.
Actually, he's still chunky. And even chunk-ier.

I think this is the actual problem here. If you're a fan, you're a fan. If the team is awful, I still find it easy to cheer for them. I just maybe stop trying to schedule all my kids' events around football games.

Everyone give your best gut feeling on who you think the new coach will be. Look in to your crystal ball. I'm guessing bb.
