Yeah that seems like kind of a stretch. I can definitely see FCS guys transferring down, and I think North Central's QB last year was at a much higher level originally. I just don't see how a kid would turn down a full ride to FCS to pay to play D3.Are you sure about this FCS comment? I played Division II football back in the '90s, and we were nationally ranked in D-II a couple of years, and no one on our team had FCS offers in high school. Maybe times have changed since the late 90s, but I can't see someone getting an FCS offer and going D-III instead.
Not saying it happens often, but I can definitely see why a kid might do that. Can go to a FCS school that loses all the time, or go to a dominant D3 school and play in championships. Also, depends on the location of the school.Yeah that seems like kind of a stretch. I can definitely see FCS guys transferring down, and I think North Central's QB last year was at a much higher level originally. I just don't see how a kid would turn down a full ride to FCS to pay to play D3.
Is this a trick question?Do you like hookers and blow with instant gratification that's sure to blow up in your face short term?
Or do you want to take her home to your parents, and maybe start a family?
I liked Butch Jones for a lot of the same reasons I like BB. Great teams when in charge of midwest teams. Tried to move up to SEC and just couldn't do it (although both were decent for the middle 3 years of their SEC careers). BB has a more impressive pre-SEC resume, but Jones was successful at a couple different levels. I don't know anything about Jones personally, but I imagine he's seen as a "better" person than BB, but probably a worse coach.Just out of curiosity. Would you rather have either of our current choices, LL or BB; or Butch Jones who just took the Akst job?
Sign me up for the 9, either way the 2 and 4 are prolly getting firedOn a scale of 1 - 10.
LL - 7 upside, 4 downside
BB - 8 upside, 2 downside.
Up and coming P5 coordinator - 9 upside, 2 downside.
This is how I feel about people saying LL just doesn’t seem like a JW hire. Based on what — one hire when he poached a P5 basketball coach? Has he poached other P5 coaches in other sports. And if it doesn’t seem like a JW hire based on him hiring Lovie, isn’t that a good thing? On the one hand, Lovie and Underwood came totally out of the blue from not a name being discussed to everyone knowing it was done in a matter of hours, minutes really.
On the other hand, the Lovie situation was totally different as no one knew to be looking for a coaching search, and Underwood would have been a much discussed name if there was any reason for us to suspect the situation at OSU had deteriorated to the extent it had within a year. Whitman himself said he started the search not thinking Underwood was available.
So is there any real reason to think the hire is going to come from left field? Not really, not to the level of the Whitman myth certainly. But I do think boards insiders and the Werners and Doug Buschon's of the world don't know anything meaningful. If they did, there would have been whispers of Lovie and Underwood, and there were none whatsoever.
Is this a trick question?
I sure wouldn't send my kid to play for Bobby Knight. Or even Mike Leach. Don't forget these coaches have to sit on your couch in your living room and win over your mother. Recall that Lou Henson was asked why he didn't recruit Pat Knight. "I didn't want to make the home visit."I couldn't care less about the coach's personality as long as he is supporting those kids (and vice versa), putting them in the best position to succeed, and ultimately winning.
Here are the MAC coaches hired directly by P5 programs since 2000:
2001: Jim Grobe – Ohio 33-33-1 > Wake Forest 77-82
2001: Gary Pinkel – Toledo 73-37-3 > Missouri 118-73
2003: Urban Meyer – Bowling Green 17-6 > Utah 22-2
2005: Terry Hoeppner – Miami, OH 48-25 > Indiana 9-14 (passed away after 2 seasons)
2010: Turner Gill – Buffalo 20-30 > Kansas 5-19
2011: Al Golden – Temple 27-34 > Miami, FL 32-25
2011: Michael Haywood – Miami, OH 10-15 > Pittsburgh 0-0 (arrested and fired before ever coaching a game)
2011: Jerry Kill – Northern Illinois 23-16 > Minnesota 29-29
2012: Tim Beckman – Toledo 21-16 > Illinois 12-25
2013: Dave Doeren – Northern Illinois 23-4 > North Carolina St 55-45
2013: Darrell Hazell – Kent St 16-10 > Purdue 9-33
2014: Dave Clawson – Bowling Green 32-32 > Wake Forest 40-44
2016: Dino Babers – Bowling Green 18-9 > 24-36 Syracuse
2016: Matt Campbell – Toledo 35-15 > Iowa St 34-27
2017: PJ Fleck – Western Michigan 30-22 > Minnesota 26-18
I think this shows that Illinois fans shouldn't be using Tim Beckman as a frame of reference here. Turner Gill, Darrell Hazell and Michael Haywood are the only coaches on this list who had less successful tenures at their subsequent stops. Everyone else - even guys whose tenures are deemed disappointing like Dino Babers - have been better than Beckman was at Illinois.
Al Golden to Miami was the only instance of an elite program hiring a MAC coach, but Miami was under stiff NCAA penalties at the time. All the remainders are programs that we can consider to be Illinois' peers.
I think that's whats known as a keeper lolWhat if I want both?
Butch Jones made such a clown of himself at Tennessee. Amazing recruiting performance there without question, but in the end he was just kind of a more obnoxious, thinner-skinned Ron Zook.Just out of curiosity. It was amazing how little he did with so much talent.Butch Jones made such a clown of himself at Tennessee. Amazing recruiting performance there without question, but in the end he was just kind of a more obnoxious, thinner-skinned Ron Zook.
And unlike Zook at Florida, the recruiting weakened somewhat as Jones' credibility waned.
I never realized Temple was ever in the MAC.Here are the MAC coaches hired directly by P5 programs since 2000:

Pretty sure they were in the Big East when Golden was there.I never realized Temple was ever in the MAC.
It was amazing how little he did with so much talent.
What smelled was Gunther, not Self. Was at local restaurant with friends, during the final week or so of SELF.....one of my friends asked Bill if he was really going to Kansas....." oh no, that;s just a rumor, I like it here at Illiinois", two days later he's the Kansas coach. Kinda smells....
Nope. They were kicked out of the Big East after 2004. Golden's first season there was 2006. They joined the MAC in 2007. Golden left for Miami after the 2010 season. Temple re-joined the Big East in 2012.Pretty sure they were in the Big East when Golden was there.
I've always thought recruiting for Ohio State was like selling snow cones for 5 cents to a wealthy person in the desert. (sorry illinoisOKC, too much caffeine today)What happened to the hartline chatter? I was so stoked about his recruiting skills
God no, I could go be the top recruiter in America at OSUWhat happened to the hartline chatter? I was so stoked about his recruiting skills
