It really does show how thin the margins are in the NCAA tournament and what a big difference small items make.

If Oregon and Texas don’t let things slip away, and if Texas A&M and Washington State had a couple of extra bounces go their way, we are talking about a Sweet 16 much more tipped toward chaos than chalk. Those small variables make a big difference.

Fun and random trivia ... number of all-time Sweet Sixteen appearances by current Sweet Sixteen teams, with the total number of NCAA Tournament appearances in parentheses).

North Carolina - 38 (53)
Duke - 33 (46)
Arizona - 20 (34)
UConn - 19 (36)
Marquette - 17 (36)
Houston - 16 (25)
NC State - 15 (29)
Illinois - 14 (34)
Purdue - 14 (34)
Gonzaga - 14 (26)
Tennessee - 10 (26)
Alabama - 10 (24)
Creighton - 7 (25)
Iowa State - 7 (23)
San Diego State - 4 (16)
Clemson - 4 (13)

Might seem like useless trivia, but it is a good reminder how happy we should be that we are slated to play in the Second Weekend again. A lot of great Illini teams have fallen short of that goal ... 3 teams above us on that list have fewer or the same number of NCAA Tournament appearances than we do. Win or lose Thursday, this has been a great season by these guys!

With that said, I am starting to get greedy ... let's keep the wins coming!

Luke Goode, best player in college basketball, confirmed. /s
I, for one, am THRILLED at how important Luke has shown himself to really be as a valued contributor to this incredible team on both offense and defense since the Big Ten Tournament. He clearly was playing through an injury for much of the season that limited his value to the team. Both he and Dain have really been given opportunities by Brad these last 6 games and they have rewarded him beyond anything any of us could possibly have predicted. As a result, I will be shocked if they both do not return next year, whereas before the Big Ten Tournament I would have been shocked if at least one of them didn't transfer. Given their patience when it came to playing time this season, it is so great to see a couple of EVERY DAY GUYS showing their true value at the most important time of the season. Their importance to maintaining the culture of this program going forward given their multiple years at ILLINOIS will be immeasurable next season.
