Very few upsets in the first two rounds made the first two rounds boring.

Very first upsets in the first two rounds makes the next two rounds exciting.
The first and second rounds were far from boring. We had our fair share of upsets....Oakland, Grand Canyon, James Madison, two of the four 11 seeds won, etc.

Now, what I think that you're referencing is all #1's and all #2's are still alive, though Marquette, Tennessee and Houston were pushed to the brink.

I don't think that this should be a surprise. All year it's been Purdue, Houston, UConn, then a big drop to the next tier, where you have Arizona, UNC, probably Iowa State and Tennessee...then another drop.

There was very little difference between the 3-6 seeds. You could mix them up and depending on what day it is...you could have a monster win or a shocking loss. We fall squarely into that group.

This tournament has been far from boring(Colorado vs Florida sticks out as phenomenal), but it being chalky at the top is most definitely true and I suspect it will carry right through to the Final Four.

I fear that everyone in UConn's path is nothing more than a double digit sacrificial lamb.

I hope the Illini are listening to all the hyping of these other teams and not even being given any attention. The hype of Iowa States defense being so superior. Take it all to the court and make a huge statement on Thursday! Come out roaring and shut all of them up!

BUT . . . there is this irrefutable fact:
Since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, only two programs have won back-to-back titles.
Duke: 1991-92
Florida: 2006-07
And, since 1984, only 4 teams that were ranked #1 in the AP final men's basketball poll for that season won the National Championship.

NCAA Tournament Results for AP #1

This is a summary of how far the #1 team in the final AP men's basketball poll made it in the NCAA Tournament since the field was expanded to 64 teams in 1984-85 (no tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

Winning an NCAA men’s basketball title once is already an extremely difficult endeavor, but conquering the March Madness gauntlet back-to-back is one of the rarest feats in college basketball. The odds of the UConn Huskies doing it, as great as they are, simply are not in their favor.

I, for one, am THRILLED at how important Luke has shown himself to really be as a valued contributor to this incredible team on both offense and defense since the Big Ten Tournament. He clearly was playing through an injury for much of the season that limited his value to the team. Both he and Dain have really been given opportunities by Brad these last 6 games and they have rewarded him beyond anything any of us could possibly have predicted. As a result, I will be shocked if they both do not return next year, whereas before the Big Ten Tournament I would have been shocked if at least one of them didn't transfer. Given their patience when it came to playing time this season, it is so great to see a couple of EVERY DAY GUYS showing their true value at the most important time of the season. Their importance to maintaining the culture of this program going forward given their multiple years at ILLINOIS will be immeasurable next season.
I was under the impression that because Goode participated in Senior night (or whatever it is called) meant that it is very unlikely that he will return next year. Did I misinterpret that? Other than that I wholeheartedly agree. I think there was a stretch of games that Goode was being criticized for lacking in his defensive ability and probably his 3-point shooting. It turns out (and I read this in one of BU's interviews or comments somewhere) that Luke was suffering from or afflicted with (or whatever the correct term) Tendinitis. I don't think many of the posters criticizing him about defense knew about that.

Luke graduated with honors in 3 years from the Gies College of Business, an incredibly impressive feat on its own and is an academic All Big Ten selection. He could gain admittance and attend any one of the many graduate programs at Illinois of his choosing and play another year. I'd be shocked and disappointed if that is not his plan.

I believe both Kofi and Ayo went through it twice, and maybe Coleman? It's just a way to recognize them and BU came out and said Goode went through it because he's graduating this year. Maybe he does go on to another program to get his master's degree, but I sure hope he'll stick around. He's gotten better as the year's gone on and you can't beat experience from the NCAAT, both good and bad. I'm convinced that the reason they're more resilient now is the experience they've had in years past.

I've been waiting for recaps of the first two rounds, but there haven't been any until now (and it's just a short) (and it's labeled "Illinois Football" for some reason).

Here you go.

Adding performance by seed.

+/- 0.5 if you won/lost as the 4/5 game as a 4/5 seed, and similarly the 8/9 game.

Otherwise:
+1 if you won as the lower seed
-1 if you lost as the higher seed

I did this scanning by conference, so I may have missed something.

I like seeing the Big 12 as the most overrated conference so far.

If I was Luke, I'd strongly consider trying for an MBA from NW (Kellogg). The program is incredibly hard to enter, and extremely expensive. Use the back door while you can. The MBA will take 2 years. Make free tuition for both years part of the deal.

Good addition to a rather silly debate in socials land. The conference discussion based on the small samples and tumultuous nature of this single elimination tournament is tiring.

Playing to seed is a relevant point. Good thought.

IMO pretty fair assessment of the 16 teams. I might put ISU even a bit higher.

It really does show how thin the margins are in the NCAA tournament and what a big difference small items make.

If Oregon and Texas don’t let things slip away, and if Texas A&M and Washington State had a couple of extra bounces go their way, we are talking about a Sweet 16 much more tipped toward chaos than chalk. Those small variables make a big difference.
And that's why people shouldn't make so much out of going home in round one. It should never be a make or brake your season thing. I want to move on every year just as bad as anyone else, but there is such a fine line between winning and moving on, or losing and going home.
