So as it sits now, we have a semblance of an offense going into next year, but the defense has the chance to be worst defense since the creation of defenses. This is not going to be fun on Saturdays this fall.

2017 will top it. Chunky, Bain, Smoot, Phillips, Barton, Powell, Svetina all disappear.

First, you can only take 25 kids in a class. If enough guys transfer out, we won't fill the amount of allotted scholarships without promoting some walkons.

Second, LaKeith Walls and BJ Bello are losses when you throw in TJ Neal.

We have ZERO LB depth right now.

Valid points, but we can take more than 25 if any enroll in January which is what Peters has done I believe. Though that may be it.

Let's hope that TJ Neal changes his mind.

Obviously, he is pissed off that his buddies are not coming back, but what does he gain by transferring? If he stays at Illinois he has the chance to be the starting MLB on a BIG team (with lots of experience and depth on the D line in front of him which makes his job easier).

Fingers crossed. Hopefully, he takes a step back and sees the opportunity that HE has if he stays. Now, if he has a schollie waiting for him and a clear path at the starting job at the new school then go for it.

Now that I think about it some more, personally, I don't want him on the team if he is just going to abandon his teammates like this. What kind of leader for your defense does that?

Next man up!

As I've admitted, I was pretty much fine with the Banks dismissal (not ok with the Cubit OC promotion), do most players on defense attribute their growth last year to Banks' coaching? Like I said, I fell into the group that thought Phair had a big impact but that seems to differ from people closer to the program.

I completely agree with that, but if there was a new HC, all of these coaches would be gone anyway. But if they were going to go this 2 year route, it's not like they would have put Bill back to OC and elevate Banks to HC for the 2 year deal.

1 million percent agree we should have a new AD and staff already in place. But remember, you had guys on the team like Karras also saying Bill should have the interim tag removed.

There is no good in where we're at now...I guess there is only slightly less bad. The 2 year thing is lunacy, but if you're going to do it, it shouldn't be too surprising the remaining original Beckman guys would go.

I respect the hell out of Ted, but no one who wasn't going to be at Illinois the following season should have had any say in it.

Reading some of the Twitter replies to Neal's post, it seems possible this decision has more to do with his young child than football itself. Is it possible that he wants to be closer than home for his last year considering his football career may be over after this season and he already has his degree?

No player, current, on their way out, or already gone should have a say in coaching decisions. This is similar to the argument that firing Groce means all the best young talent on the basketball team will transfer. It is the job of the new coach not to allow that to happen, not the job of the people making that decision to bow before the whims of an emotional college student.

Now if I am the GM of the Cavaliers... I may want to listen to the whims of LeBron James. [emoji3]

Even more blunt when you see what Barr is referring to. Going from bottom to top.

Not liking that TJ is considering leaving. He wouldve been an important upper classmen leader for the upcoming season.

But I don't mind that some of the Becko recruits who wouldn't have seen much playing time are leaving. For the most part, they were sub-big ten recruits to begin with. I'm fine with flushing clean the Becko era.

I hope to God that we at some point can hire an AD who can then hire a coach and get us out of this crazy sad 4-year embarrassment we are mired in.

1) He isn't considering, he is leaving - already mentioned
2) These players we are losing are being "replaced" by the worst class we've had in about a decade
3) We are still losing important depth regardless of where the class ranks

I'm actively rooting for these guys to bail. They don't deserve to be caught in the crossfire of Bill and Ryan's bank heist.

On a serious note, I am too. I'm not sure players like Dudek are going to see another bowl game during there careers here. These guys deserve better than that IMO.

On a less serious note, I'm kind of rooting for a scenario in which they are forced to fire Bill Cubit, so they have to appoint an interim interim head coach. If we're going to burn the next half decade of our program to the ground, we might as well have some fun with it.

Not me, I will never root for anyone to leave the O & B. I applaud them when they come and have always said "Once and Illini, always an Illini". I can be frustrated with how things are going just like anyone else, but I refuse to root against the Illini.

It would be an interim head coach

A quiet afternoon. Being an Illini football fan lately reminds me of that old Ice Cube song. No torn ligament hits, no dececomitments. Checked my Twitter feed, not even any Trib bits. Plus nobody we need transferred out of the Urbana-Cham-pey ... today was a good day.

TJ Neal heading to Auburn?

“Being able to play down there in Alabama, it’s like a dream come true,” Neal said. “From my high school, I never thought I’d play at a big-time school like Auburn. To have a chance now, it’s exciting to play against some of the top players in the country.”
