Transfers Thread

Just speculating here, but it is definitely worth looking at this another way. Lovie and staff are not just rebuilding the program by improving on field performance, they are also changing the attitude in and around the program.

While you might lose upperclassmen who have shown production (something I would disagree with simply because tackles don't mean a player is performing well), you are putting yourself in a better position moving forward. I'm sure Tito is a good guy with the best of intentions, but you can't have guys that throw flags back at referees on your roster. This is in addition to his suspension earlier in the season. Those actions and that kind of attitude is a leech on the success of the program.

Regardless of why they left, the additional scholarships are a huge benefit to the rebuild. While it may cost us a win or two next season, the purpose of the rebuild is not to win 4-5 games in 2018, but to win 7-8 games from 2019 on. We need to use scholarships on guys that can help us win in the future, not on guys that produce a product that show just how far we fell during the Beckman and Cubit years. Getting closer to a full class this year will only speed up the rebuild. It is tough on the upperclassmen, but needs to happen if we want to fully rebuild.

Very well said. The culture change may be the biggest of all their challenges.

I was thinking the same thing. Part of this may be more a culture change. What I do not believe is these players have lost faith in Lovie.

Random question. During the player year-end interviews, are they told about any future staff changes? Would hate to see someone transfer because of a bad apple on the coaching staff, and then see that coach replaced a month later.

I can't imagine Lovie announcing to players that coach (x,y,z) will not be around next year. I will be replacing him with someone that is more in line with my standards after signing day. It wouldn't stay in the room, and if that were the plan, there would be no benefit to keep him on staff now.

Every single program loses players every single year for many different reasons.

I look at this as the Illini have over sixty student-athletes who WANT to be here, and Lovie can now add two dozen more. :chief:

If this isn't wheels falling off, i.e. players who contribute, I don't know what is as far as our roster is concerned
I guess I’m starting to not understand what the term “wheels have fallen off” mean. To me, it means there is zero control and we are careening towards a big accident. I’m not seeing that from this staff.
Everyone was expecting transfers after the season, but these are not "dead weight" transfers. These are legit contributors. This is realistically what we lost in the last 2 days:
1. Senior starting capable linebacker with 2 years of experience.
2. Rotational/Depth lineman with starting experience. A 4 star recruit that everyone wanted who would still only be a redshirt junior next season. Linemen typically develop slowly.
3. Starting safety, still only would be a junior next season. Made freshman All-B1G last year.
4. Senior rotational/depth DT with experience.

We're not just losing 3rd stringers guys.

I hear you, but even with those guys, we were not going to win next year, either. Lovie wants his own guys so I understand if he was upfront with these transfers about playing time. Again, in my mind, this was year one of Lovie.

We are going to take more L’s next year, too, which is fine as long as we identify a starting QB and see continued development in our underclassman. We are building for two years from now and beyond.

Yeah. As much as I would like to be positive, the list of transfers is decidedly not encouraging. Hopefully this staff can recruit well enough to replace these guys a few years down the road, but that won't help us next year. Things are going to be ugly for a while.

There transfers are not one bit different, then had we had a SR class with more then 2 guys who played. Next years team still isn't going to be great mainly do to our QB, so its better these guys leave and we find more young guys for the future

I'm kind of torn on this.

On one hand you're losing contributors to a team that was already the worst in the B1G (if not all Power 5). Thus making the likelihood of having some remote success next year an even longer shot. On top of this you will, most likely, drive the fan base into further apathy and really run the risk of having those that somehow still pay any attention to the team turn on the staff. All of this makes recruiting that much harder and we eventually end up looking for the next great MACtion Hope.

On the other hand, next year is still part of the rebuild according to "The Plan" and 2019 is supposed to be the coming out party (I think I have that timeline right). With that in mind you get more of this staffs recruits on the field sooner, thereby expediting their learning and growth. By doing so you continue to build the foundation for the future (read: not just the next year or two, which is the most these transfers could provide).

Optics aren't good, obviously. But I think there is some method to this madness. I can probably talk myself into believing that this doesn't hurt 2019 and is supposed to help 2020 (and beyond). If it doesn't work though, welp...

any thoughts among the group regarding Berstein's comments on 670 about the Illini and upper classmen leaving. I heard a introductory comment that wasnt terible but failed to catch the overall discussion. i do know much of the Score's comments are typically negative. most of that was during and immediately after the Beckman era.

the transfer from Appalachian State on the Rivals list?

As far as I know, graduate transfers count against the limit of 25 per recruiting class. 247 and Rivals aren't going to count Meadors as part of the recruiting class, however.

As far as how many scholarships we have available for this recruiting class, it was 17 before all of the transfers. We had 76 scholarship players this year and 8 Scholarship Seniors. That means we were 9 under the limit of 85 and the Senior Class only had 8 players. This is where the figure of 17 comes from.

Add in the four? scholarship transfers, that will get us to 21 available scholarships. We should see AT LEAST four more guys transfer so we will probably have a full class of 25 for 2018 without having to worry about the 85 scholarship limit. That means potentially 10 more guys could be added to this class. I would like to see graduate transfers at QB, TE and OL in the mix in order to establish some class balance as the Class of 2019 could be very small.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is whether or not Nate Echard petitions for 6th year.

Totally agree. There's no way that these players recruited by Beckman look at Lovie and think the program is worse off.

don't early enrollies count vs the 85, but not the 25 limit ? is so I think we a;ready have a couple who will be here early as well as V brown if he picks us

If you can back date them, yes. However, I don't know if we can do that since the 2017 class was full? I know we had three early enrollees last year (not counting Watkins) but I don't know if any of those guys were back dated to the Class of 2016? I'm guessing no since it appears like 2016 was a full class as President and Nickerson counted against the limit of 25.

This is where the numbers game of football recruiting gets convoluted and complex.

I think it's safe to say that we probably are limited to adding 10 more players at this point if/when 4 more guys transfer out.

well I hope Reuben Unije and V Brown are 2 of our adds, but even if we can add 25 I think this class will end up ranked about the same as last years. That said these guys leaving is helping us more then hurting I truly believe

LB went from experienced group, now subtract Watson and Jones.

Harding, Phillips are only remaining with significant PT

Hanson also comes back.

Any reason to read into position groups and why some people would be leaving? I can't imagine Hardy is one of the coaches people are upset with? Alternative reality, we are bringing in a few killer Fr LBers? Very strange situation with Julian Jones. I understand Tre Watson, has the same feeling as Neal to Auburn.

Is there more going on here that isn't obvious, or is it simply that more freshman will get tick next year?

Found a curious quote on Tre Watsons feed - Tweet Tweet

Any more surprises coming here?

And was this players choice or coaches decision?

I am baffled here

No clue but I certainly hope not. These are guys who had significant playing time last year but I can understand their concerns about getting benched if they aren't significantly better than the younger players. We saw guys like Foster and DiLauro get yanked around all season.

I can understand Watson and Nelson leaving since both are graduating and can play immediately. Nelson leaving really hurts since he was such a reliable player who you didn't even have to worry about if he was out there at Safety. I honestly think he has the potential to play on Sundays. He'll have two years of eligibility left after graduating in May.

Jones, on the other hand, has to sit out a year and was playing quite a bit. He actually had a great start to the year and would be in the mix to get significant playing time even if Hansen comes back fully healthy.

Phillips, Harding and Hansen is a nice group. After that...I don't know.

Knight is listed as a LB on the roster and I know he had a start this year but he is probably more of a Nickel.

Abercrombie was moved back from the DL to LB after we had depth issues towards the end of the year but they may move him back to DL unless we get more depth at DE.

Justice Williams and Shogbonyo barely played although Shogbonyo started in that disastrous game against Rutgers. Mondesir only played on STs.

Tholson looks like a solid prospect, if not a bit undersized, so maybe they are expecting him to get a lot of playing time next year?

Coleman could be recruited here as a LB but he needs to get bigger (in addition to committing here!).

I would like to believe that Adeoye is still an option but I doubt it.
