Man, that Michigan game.

I think that game showed a lot of people what Illinois could do even without Ayo. If we got blown out (as we all thought we were going to), the optimism about returns from the rest of the gang might not be as high.

There we go - let's get those orange kool-aid IVs started on all of us on here!!

Seriously, Trent's returns solves alot of issues. And if can score 16-18 ppg within the offense, no better way for him go close out his Illini career.

Is he close to the Illini career 3 pt record?
80 behind Corey Bradford

Trent is quite talented. If we reintroduce him to the lead role this coming year, he is so much more skilled now than his freshman year. This team will be dangerous come tournament time. you add a few talented freshmen, and we might have a top 5 big ten team. ...And if Kofi is back, hold onto your hats...

The best part about this is Trent gets a proper send off at Senior night!
Well, maybe the second best part? Trent's return is so important to our defense that I'd suggest that is the Best part.....

No offense to TF (want him to get all the recognition in the world) but I feel like that's kinda crappy if those stats count towards records. If it was 3pt% or something like that then I'd have less issue, but allowing a guy significantly more opportunities to accumulate counting stats seems unfair to Cory and the other guys on that list.

I have less faith in the freshmen to deliver (think they'll be awesome in the long run, but they're freshmen) but have really high hopes for Hawk. I'm hoping he can improve his game over the offseason and deliver on his massive potential. Being able to play him substantial minutes at the 4 (assuming we don't get a Tre Mitchell) would just give us a totally different look that we haven't had for years.

Kind of like Hank Aaron batting 4K more times than the Babe.

What about the players from the 50's and 60's who were did not play as freshman and had very few redshirt opportunities? They also played fewer games. Their records have been surpassed by 4 year players and close to 40 game seasons.

So your argument is that b/c they changed the rules in the 60s and then kept them that way for the next 50+ years that this one-year blip of a rule change (which will not persist into the future) should be treated the exact same way?

Skip Thoren had the career rebounding record for a time (830 in 74 games) James Augustine is the current record holder with 1023 but he played in 137 games. Illinois played 26-24-24 games in Thoren's 3 years of playing. They played 32-33-39-33 in Augustine's 4 years. Thoren had 11.2 rebounds per game and Augustine 7.5 yet Augustine is the career record holder. It appears that career records are career records no matter how many games are played. Who knows what the NCAA will do in the future. Someday 5 years of eligibility might be allowed. Think of all the changes to the game from a jump ball after every goal to no jump balls to a 30 second shot clock and the addition of a 3 point shot (Which was made longer a few years ago). How do you compare 3 point statistics? Rule changes can have a big effect on many statistics. Just saying a career record is a career record. The player had to stick around, stay healthy and keep his position on the team to allow the minutes to achieve the record whether it is points, rebounds, steals, assists, free throws, etc. That seems to be the logic for allowing Augustine to be the "Career" rebound record holder.

He can have the records and be celebrated if he surpasses them, but they need an asterisk in the books to denote five full years of playing. It will be a unique opportunity for him that future players won't have.

I mean you already have it to a certain degree in all the counting stats.. More games per season now than the 80's. Didn't have a three point shot until 1986 or so. The three point line is at a different distance (if you want one going the other way). Plus the rate at which three point shots are taken is only going to increase. Going even further back, freshman didn't use to have any eligibility.

If you want to remember Cory as a better three point shooter, I'm right there with you. I don't view Malcolm Hill as a better scorer than Dee Brown or Andy Kaufmann just because he's number 3 in all time points.

I just don't see a reason to put an asterisk next to Trent's name anywhere in the record book because he decided to comeback for another season.

With total respect I completely disagree with this. Records were meant to be broken. When I was young the NFL only played 14 games should Tom Brady’s records not count? When GB broke Deon’s record the first person to congratulate him and say how happy he was was Deon. If you asked Corey B he would say the same thing.
I loved Ayo he was and always will be a savior to Illinois, but he was always a pro. Trent is a college athlete and one of the best ever to play at Illinois. I think he and the Illini could be even better next year if Kofi comes back. The ball needs to be in Curbello’s hands more and it will be. I would compare TF to Lucas Johnson. There game is nothing like each other, but both total sell outs for Illinois basketball and that to means way more than the NBA. I am so happy for Ayo he deserves everything as he has worked on his game more than most kids ever will. Still, give me a Trent Frazier, Lucas Johnson or even a Quinn Richardson every day of the week as they play (probably knowing they will never play in the NBA).
just my opinion of course

Still have my Skip Thoren autograph, I am now 66.

I see your point and all the other points being made in response to this.

HOPEFULLY, we have another player break the record in the near future, and it will be a moot point. This is not meant to mean that I don't want Trent or Cory to have the record, just that I'd love to have another high volume 3 point shooter (maker) on the team!

Also, with the way the game is evolving, I feel like the opportunity is there for a 4-year knock-down shooter.

Maybe this can help with another rule change that happened during Trents tenure, the moved the 3-point line in the middle of his college career. Si in the end it will all come out in the wash.

No real news to add here, but my daughter saw Curbelo and Trent out at a campus bar last night. She asked Trent if he was coming back ("my grandma NEEDS an answer" - yes, my mom is the biggest Illini bball fan of the family) and he said "he doesn't know if he's coming back next year". She also said girls were crying after meeting them - they are total rockstars on campus. Maybe it will help sway him ;)

We were a poor shooting team last year with little length. Loyola exposed us. Williams isn’t a quick release shooter and cannot create, Ayo was doubled and he failed to utilize others and Kofi cannot pass from the post. With all those weaknesses, Trent had very few good looks. I do not look through any color glasses, I knew our weaknesses could have gotten exposed. I am under the opinion that Miller can set his sails to other places. I do not care if its his mother or whoever. I want people here that were 100% in. But enough of that. Trent will be an asset and will have better looks next year due to our spread our offense will be. With more length and better shooters, as solid Monte was last year being a glue guy, most of the time it was 5 on 4 on offense. I hope Trent takes the entire summer and just shoots jumpers and a nice elbow jumper will help.
