maybe I'm naive to the process but is there no contract involved in NIL at all? even if it's a wink wink do this car dealer billboard for $1MM, but to be paid in full you have to remain an active member of the team?

So disappointed to hear this. My initial reaction is to be upset with Ty for not going through the season and working to get minutes with this team, to find his niche. I’m not past that reaction yet. I have a difficult time seeing a player take advantage of a high level program and NIL because they aren’t going to see the playing time they expected. I love Ty’s competitive nature and what he brought to the team, but this is D1 basketball. I felt he had so much to offer as a leader on and off the court.
Ty going is a major bummer. Sincere was my favorite player 2 years ago, and Ty last year.
Independent of Ty, my reading of the law (IANAL), makes it look like one can write contracts such as:
$X per sponsored autograph session.
$Y per sponsored <> at a camp/clinic
$Z per sponsored personal appearance
...
With the total not to exceed $$.
If someone leaves the team, or is in bad graces, don't schedule any sponsored events for them. Any actual experts care to say if I have this right?
Sounds like more business than competitiveness...

There is one guy on this roster that was here ~180 days ago. That was a choice by the staff and specific players. The season could be a total failure or booming success, but it isn't related to the slogan having zero connection to reality.

I believe a lot of the contracts are monthly payments while on the team, laws prohibit pay for play.
Ideas (rabbit hole warning!) for things that might improve this type of situation in the NIL era:
- donors need to be prepped by UI AD and Coach(es) that this is going to happen regularly, and be OK with it, because we must have gotten a better kid, which is a good thing
- while a kid can redshirt, sit, and collect his NIL, it behooves all involved to get the kid to move on sooner rather than later; a kid will know his skills will atrophy when he doesn't play, plus getting a year older is likely detrimental to his value to future destinations
- BU keeps a roster spot or two open for mid-year transfers, so other coaches will also. Maybe it's not (currently) as big as the portal between seasons, but there is no reason there can't be an in-season portal, if there isn't one already. Are there NCAA and/or League rules restricting in-season transfers?
- If a kid gets P5 NIL (eg $200k ?) and can't make it with his team, there is no reason his current P5 team can't offer him a partial payout (eg $150k), that makes up for whatever potential future teams offer him in NIL (eg $50k, if they are smaller schools). Kinda like a pro team eating part of a player's salary for salary cap reasons. In this way, a kid can earn the full NIL he was promised at UI, but he can do it (for one year) at a new school, without sitting out a year and atrophying. If he rocks at his new (non-P5) school, he might be able to re-transfer to new P5 school and earn P5 NIL without skipping a beat. Meanwhile, his non-P5 school gets a highly motivated player with (near) P5 skills, but doesn't have to pay P5 NIL while they have him. And UI would save $50k and have a roster spot open now, vs next year. If the kid moves laterally to another P5 school, he might make more than the $200k, in which case UI would likely be off the hook completely for his NIL, I should think.

Meanwhile, in what way could Ty still be a productive/positive member of our team, if we all know he will not play and will be out the portal as soon as he can be? Seems like a real negative situation for team chemistry.

In fairness, the donors paid for the team's starting 5, didn't they? I mean, Riley, KJ, Boz, Ivisic, and Hummer all had more donor money spent on them than Ty, right? They're sort of getting what they wanted, problem is, sometimes what they want is contrary to what's best for someone else and you don't always get it all. Also part of this is the crazy regulations of the NCAA where you can add players after the transfer portal signup closes, so it sort of leaves kids who are fully committed in the lurch if the team functionally replaces them
Ty's a good player but hardly irreplaceable with Morez on the boards and DGL/White to step up offensively
Big time Underwood fan but this is wrong on so many levels. You don't reward loyalty(Ty Rodgers staying) by giving him a potentially diminishing role. That's not right and Underwood will either sink or swim with this type of mentality. I hope for his sake, he swims but I can see a scenario like 2 yrs ago but even worse b/c there is absolutely no returning chemistry with this team unlike that team in 2022-2023. I feel more bad for Ty Rodgers than I do for us as fans b/c that dude has most likely worked his butt off b/c he's just that kind of guy and this is what he gets in return? Newcomers jumping him in the pecking order? It's complete BS. It's not really similar to Sencire b/c Sencire was behind senior laden squad of players. This is actually completely different. This sends a bad message to players who stay in the program for 2+ yrs and that message is that they're expendable regardless of the contributions they've made to the program and Ty has made major contributions. He is not a bit player like Sencire. He was on a trajectory to be a 10 ppg, 6 rbg, 3-4 apg, 1 steal per game type of contributor. Draymond Green light if you will. Now, we may never see that truly come to fruition

I'd rather have had Ty than Tre White. I have more loyalty as a fan to a player who has been here for a couple of yrs who does all the right things. This type of fan mindset is wrong on so many levels. DGL and Morez play different positions from Ty anyways. You support loyalty...you don't diminish it to make yourself feel better

I agree you can't pay for play. My examples were of pay per sponsored NIL activity. As far as I can read that is legal. Whether a player would sign a deal like that is a different question. My guess is that it would depend on the reputation of the signing coach. Umm, NIL organization.

Good lord. Yeah, let's retaliate against a kid academically because they see the writing on the wall with regards to their playing time. I mean come on. Maybe if you decide to leave your company for a better job, your company should take away your health insurance during your 2 weeks notice period and cut your brake lines to put pressure on you to stay.
