I like Underwood’s presser message on getting tougher, nastier, grittier etc but those are cultural behaviors that often take multiple seasons to develop with roster consistency. I hope he’s not counting on that to suddenly develop with new players over the course of a few practices.

Our roster is constructed as a middle tier contending team. We can't beat the big boys unless we shoot lights out. No real athleticism, no toughness - even if we start to gel better and get over some injuries, we just aren't going to magically become tougher/more athletic. Fun squad to watch when things are going right, but sadly I just cant see this happening against a Top 15 team.

Fair points but we’ll just agree to disagree. If UConn hadn’t gone through a stretch where they missed shots (most were exactly the shots they were looking for), they would have won by 25 or 30. In my opinion we looked overmatched at almost every position.
And if we hit our open threes at a decent clip we're in it all the way and maybe win. What ifs work in both directions.

No way. He’s a big 4 than can easily play the 5. Have you seen him play this year? He plays center part time on an extremely good Michigan team. He is a beast. Same size as Mirk but WAY stronger. He’s much improved from his freshman year.

Defense is just not where it needs to be. IL struggled to get to the rim while UCon did not. UCon got to too many contested loose balls and rebounds while we stood flat footed. We shot too many 3s when we were not making them instead of driving to the basket or rolling to it. Too much standing and watching from the 3 point line and not enough cutting to the basket without the ball. Team just did not show up today once again.

My thoughts exactly. Brad is too much of a JUCO-type of coach. Constant turnover of players. No emphasis of player retention and player development. Think how much better we would be with Morez J as a power forward and Tre White as a rotation player. I am curious, How did May poach Morez? Did he backchannel him during last season? Was Brad aware May was trying to poach him? Did Brad try to keep Morez?

They ran an offense with movement and multiple cutters from 5 players and multiple picks away from the ball. While Illnois runs alot of ball picks with players standing on the perimeter waiting for pentration and a dishout.
Illinois runs a NBA-style offense, which is fine when you have NBA-level shooters standing in the corners and NBA rules that keep guys from hanging around the rim.

This is college basketball. You need a college basketball offense to be successful.

Hmm.. Unfortunately, They have Tom Izzo...We don't

Lot of VERY VERY GOOD teams and coaches are doing a lot of the same stuff

We got open looks anytime we wanted and didn’t make them

People here will strongly prefer to make it a case of insubordination. I mean after all Brad was yelling at him when he came out and then he sat down and that’s so unique.
How many times are you going to write the same post? Any criticism and that poster is miserable. Point taken.

And while I hope all is well, this post game comment sounds like more coach speak. Need to deflect from any question on attitude or performance.

Definitely. Brad was definitely protecting a player. Bad form to throw player under the bus. Protect him in the presser and then hold him accountable for the next 8 days in practice.

Honestly, offense will be better if defense is better. Getting stops creates huge momentum and better transition offense. Our defense struggles to get stops…..Which creates more problems when we can’t score. Time for players to step up as well, quit being soft. Wagler was super soft tonight, looked like a freshman.

I agree with you...Unfortunately, some posters and the coaches believe these are quick fixes.

With all respect, how many times has that happened over the past season and change?

If it keeps happening, maybe it’s time to figure out how to get shots that have a higher probability of being successful?

Yes, I’m frustrated because I saw this coming all week. I was hoping I would be wrong, but unfortunately I wasn’t. If random Internet hoops fan like me can see this coming a week prior, why can’t the staff who is being paid very well to figure it out?

No, their first shot was with 12 seconds on the clock, it reset to 20 correctly if even with a little lag, the second time it was due to expire at 2:11 of game time and the foul occurred at 2:10. The refs completely botched the call after spending 3 minutes reviewing the tape!!

They simply didn’t want to reverse the call and made up a reason that made no sense- it’s such a huge call they really need consequences for that. Also what was with the shot clock operator at MSG? many mistakes this game, have to get a better person doing that job- it’s not hard
I believe the bad/missed call was the over the back on Ben. Call that, no 4 point play, Ben gets 2 FT's with the chance to cut the lead to 5 with 2 mins to go.
Played terrible, etc. but 1 missed call from making it very interesting.

I'm sorry but Mirk shouldn't be attempting 10 three pointers, that's not his game. Whether it's his inexperience/immaturity as a freshman or the coaching staff allowing him to take that many threes either way it can't happen.

Edit: My mistake his field was 3-10 and his threes was 0-4. But yeah, his volume of threes shouldn't go any higher at least 2 in a game.
I thought Big Z fired up some clunkers in the second half with no one in the same area code defensively.

They were worse on layups.

The fact is there were plays to be made at all levels and they went 19-60. They had 31 shots that weren't threes and they made 13. That's 32.8%.

They need to hit to hit open looks. Their skill is why they're being paid.

They are soft--plain and simple, and they aren't going to all-of-a-sudden become a strong, dominate team. They are who they are.

Both twins should be posting up a ton more. They have the ability to back it in and baby hook their defenders to death, but it's not happening. They're chucking stupid three pointers. Soft.

I guess Wagler did OK versus Alabama, but nothing today; I get it that he and David are Freshmen, but I am lowering my expectations for those two. They need time.

Where was Andres today? He needs to develop a three-point shot, because against athletic and top teams, his taking-it-to-the rim game will be challenged big time. So, he needs to get better at finishing at the basket against better competition.

They need a Morez-type player; I know he's the villain, but just stating facts. Where the heck is the intensity on this soft team? I'd prefer some like Morez, so unathletic BH isn't forced to play a role (big bad rebounder) that he is not a natural fit for. And since he can't hit three-pointers consistently, I see no use.

I got criticized for suggesting an overrated team last year. I predicted a R2 loss and was correct. Hate to say it: I am leaning to another R2 loss team. There is still some time, but we'll see.
This is pure gold. Great summation.

Illini weren't ready or willing to play at a highly intense level, didn't guard and didn't make game adjustments when 3's weren't falling. "."

I’m not sure what other posts of mine you are referring to but the ratio of “all hope is lost” posts to measured, thoughtful posts is about 100:1.

I get that guys are struggling. But you aren't going to win playing guys like Ben and Jake extended minutes and/or in crunch time. Brad likes to "make a point" with the bench but I'm not sure what that point actually is other than to watch those guys miss shots/rebounds/defensive assignments.
Ben had a strong game and helped us get back in it. This is a bad take.
