I cannot think of any financial motivation for the B1G to NOT go ahead a cherry-pick from the PAC-12 any team there that will help the B1G earn them more money. And the new B1G would be leaving so much money on the table by not absorbing all the most attractive west coast markets, especially since it makes so much logistical and scheduling and fan-preference sense to carve out a western division of some kind. To that end I’d have to think Stanford, Cal, Washington, Oregon are locks to join too. Why not Arizona and Colorado while they’re at it. What does not adding those teams get the B1G at this point?

To me the intrigue is not whether the PAC-12 gets dissected but whether this seismic realignment gives the B1G leverage on ND or open doors to raid the ACC too.
San Francisco is the 6th largest TV market in the USA. I agree, no way Stanford or Cal (or both) get ignored in this.

As long as we're dreaming big .... New "Death Star" BIG ... not divisions, just travel pods for scheduling (all AAU members, save ND). Can you imagine the basketball schedule?
1. UCLA, USC, UO, UWASH, STAN, CAL, AZ
2. UTAH, COL, NEB, MINN, KAN, IOWA, UW
3. IND, ILL, NW, ND, OSU, UM, MSU
4. PSU, RUT, MD, UNC, DUKE, GA TECH, UVA
Very interesting. Since the realignments are all driven by football I think some schools would not make this list

Cal (not great at either football or basketball)
Kansas (only basketball)
Duke (only basketball till recently)
Gtech (not great at either football or basketball)

Schools that might replace them

Arizona State (brings AZ market PHX)
Florida State (bring FL market)
Oklahoma State (good at football)
University of Miami (going to be big football due to NIL)
Texas Tech/Houston (start to go after TX market)
Pittsburgh (help lock down PA market)

At risk if B10 starts relegating teams

Nebraska (not football power anymore)
Rutgers (not really bringing east coast market, no history of football success)

Thoughts on scheduling in a 16-team league.

A way to do relegation without actually doing relegation would be to have weighted scheduling every year the way the NFL used to do it.

Thus the 1st place team would have the hardest schedule the next year based off of the previous season’s records, the 2nd place team would have the second hardest and so on.

Don’t worry about divisions or protected rivalries or whatever. You get the schedule you earn.

Tear it down.

I'd guess "nothing" since the B1G/PAC tie-ins aren't rock solid anymore. Years where one or both teams wasn't from the B1G or PAC (due to playoffs and Natty's, mostly)

2021
2018
2015
2011
2006
2005
2002
It's pretty run down actually... Needs to be completely re-built...

Anyone have thoughts on Georgia Tech? AAU member, located in a huge media market. And could be good to peel off a school right in the SEC's backyard, to show they are regional while B10 is national.
GA Tech would be a fantastic fit. Great research institution in a huge media market in a growing state. I’d love an eastern expansion with Tech, UNC, and UVA.

its basically free for PAC schools to leave after this coming year. no exit fees. no delays in effective membership date

not so much for ACC schools.

I think all thoughts right now about any other schools are westward

anyone who was going to tatoo the 2023 B1G football schedule on their forearm needs to re-think that

I also live in the Puget Sound and am really hoping the huskies make the jump. Don’t love the ND in the B1G but think they add a lot of tv viewer which is what is driving this train
Now-a-days I think it's more about streaming than tv... jmho

ACC: not with the GoR til 2036. With time, the cost of bolting decreases. So, at some point, it's game on. But not now.

None of this nonsense has to happen if USC would stop playing night games. Then they'd get trophy consideration from east coast snobs.
And change just for change's sake is not all that much a good thing.
I want to hear Josh and BB be giddy about what a fantastic deal this is for everyone.
Bear in mind that USC comes to South Bend before November. You think they want to be here when the weather turns bleak?
This is incredible. I actually didn't believe you. For the last 8 years, ND at USC has been in November. USC at ND has been in October.

I don't know who the bigger wimps are. USC for not coming to Indiana in November or ND for allowing them to get away with it.

Texas and Florida are two huge prizes, but the SEC already beat the BIG to UT and A&M. I don't think BIG would be interested in a non-premiere school in that state. I think Miami and FSU could be pried from the ACC, but neither of them have the academic cachet of AAU membership.
Miami has plenty of academic heft. Just gets lost in their bad boy football program.

A lot of people still consume their sports on cable. I saw somewhere that 56% of households still use cable service. Streaming prices have been increasing and are getting pretty close to cable prices too, which may reduce the bleeding of cable subscribers.

And streaming is about adding users. Being relevant in a large market still helps attract users from said market.

ND almost always does those west coast games USC/Stanford on the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, so as to allow alums to travel there on a 4-5 day weekend
I think in return they agree to play USC or Stanford in mid October

Here is what I wrote on August 18, 2021 in post 741 in conference realignment.

ere is my "dream" scenario:

Have the following schools from the PAC 12:

West Division (all AAU schools):

USC
UCLA
Stanford
California
Oregon
Washington
Utah
Arizona

The Central Division is:

Illinois
Northwestern
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Nebraska
Kansas
Notre Dame

The East Division

Michigan
Michigan St.
Ohio St.
Penn St.
Maryland
Indiana
Purdue
Pittsburgh

Atlantic Division

Duke
North Carolina
Clemson
Virginia
Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
FSU
Rutgers

Have each division winner play a qualify for a conference playoff.

Play each team in your division and then play the corresponding same place team in the other divisions from the following year. Two non-conference games.

The Great BIG Conference

Ha ha

The ice cream cone licking itself.

If the Big10 still requires academic excellence for league admission, then the likely Pac12 candidates are UCLA, USC, Stanford and Berkeley. All of the rest are a substantial academic step down from the current Big10 schools, Nebraska excepted.

Nebraska is far worse than any other BIG10 or Pac12 school academically. Nebraska promised to improve during the talks to join. Ten years later, I think they are regarded even worse. All in favor of punting them for failure to meet league academic membership requirements? Hell, they even make Iowa academics look good.

At what point do we get to stop hearing Bill Walton talk about the Conference of Champions? And does he start calling B1G games now?

Hey fellow Puget Sounder. I’m an Illini married to a Husky. She’s freaking out right now too. Alma mater for her could wind up in the Mountain West if they aren’t careful. Jen Cohen is about the last person you want as your AD. You know who I feel great having as AD though? Whitman. Illinois is ascending in revenue sports at the perfect time to keep becoming a nationally relevant school.

ND has always felt it is too good for the B1G. Perhaps with its old rival USC on board now it can come off its high horse a little.
Imagine adding USC, ND and Miami all in one round of realignment. 👀
