UTSA 37, Illinois 30 Postgame

The loss isn't on him, but you can't regularly miss high like he does and continue to put up the kind of numbers he has. Incredibly fortunate across both games to remain un-intercepted.

He's a tough kid though, give him that.

Somehow "incredibly fortunate" is still underselling it. There was at least one, if not two, that should have been picked on that last drive alone.

Man, this sucks. Still think this is a result of the "barren cupboard" left by Mr. Smith...only game 2, way too early to rush to rush to assumptions

Even some of his completions tonight were terrible throws. Accuracy is not his strength, it seems.

Consistency is not Peters' strength, but when he's good he really adds something to what we've watched.

HEAVY DOSE OF OPTIMISM ALERT - the last time we lost to a Group of 5 team at home we went bowling?

Two things I’m questioning, why didn’t we switch our alignment in man coverage sooner?

That run call cost valuable precious seconds. If it would have worked you look okay? Why take the risk of being tackled inbounds? Your stud WR was rolling.

I guess that’s why they’re the coaches and we’re hiding behind screens. :shield:

Yeah, 200%. He was asked to go crazy for an extended time there. He DID THAT, and without turning it over through the air. We and the staff need to trust this guy until he proves that he can't be trusted.

By the way, a duck here and there is NOT a reason to lose all trust.
Good arm and pocket awareness, but a bit slow on his decisions. The opening is gone when he finally makes the pass. No interceptions is good, but he put a few out there that should have been. I'm not hanging the loss on him. Biggest weakness to me was pass coverage. Also, throw the ball to the damn TE's. Barker and Ford had to have had a huge advantage over the defenders on them...is that on the QB or the playcalling?

No it isn't, which is why that career td/int ratio was so upside down coming into the year. I'll say Art runs better than I expected so there isn't much dropoff from Peters to him in that department. But I feel (totally tangible and measurable) like Peters controls the game a bit better.

The coaches waited too long to press UTSA's receivers. Illinois was down 14 before making the change.

The ball hitting Joseph on the punt return was really unfortunate and a momentum killer. No point in blocking when the returner is calling it off.

I have no idea what Barnes was looking at on the 3rd and 2 where UTSA ran for a touchdown. That felt like game over but give the team credit for not giving up.

If we’re ever going to stop being a doormat program we have to win these games. The last time we didn’t lose a game in our non-conference schedule was 2011. It’s hard to put together winning seasons like this.

Repeated defensive lapses, especially badly missed tackles, blown pass coverages, and lack of pressure on the quarterback on pass plays allowed a very quick and talented UTSA team to mount one long drive after another, making us play from behind all game. Special teams were very good (except for one fluke punt play where a bad bounce hit an Illini), offense was OK, and defense was substandard. Unlike Lovie, BB and staff will make corrections to give us a better chance to win.

We need our QB1 and RB1 back
We need DBs that can play man and edge rushers that can get to the QB and the discipline at some LB positions. Then after you improve the uniforms and concession stands, getting our starting RB and QB would next change the outcome the most.

Well, poop. So close to tying it up. Losing to a directional school sucks. Texas football > Illinois football. Our defense and line play was disappointing. Art is a good backup (not starter).
We got a hill to climb, but there are signs of hope. It kind of reminds me of the Bball team in the early days of the Underwood era. Hopefully they have a half-way similar arc.

I also don’t get this. Art had 275 yards and no picks. A handful of bad throws, but I thought he played well enough. Loss isn’t on him
If this is Maryland, Iowa, etc. any big ten team he’s got 2 picks and at most 200 yards. There were multiple bad throws, yes there were drops, but there wasn’t a single time he put his target into a good spot. Don’t let anything fool you to thinking Art is still the solution like many did last week. We need Brandon to have any hope.
