I love the 24 ranking. If someone had told me in mid-August that we'd be 4-1, I would have taken it all day long. We need scUM to go to Washington next week and win (then they have a Bye week), and we need to rest on our Bye week and take care of business against Purdue. I have October 19 circled. I want both teams to be 5-1. I want us to destroy scUM for the 100th celebration of Memorial Stadium. That will elevate us for the rest of the season. scUM is extremely beatable this year. Cannot wait for the rest of this ride.....

Honestly, the Ducks are even beatable this year. They have some of the best skill players in the nation but their lines have struggled at times. Solid and consistent play with a couple opportunistic turnovers could be the ticket there. Hard to imagine a road win in Eugene but I don’t feel as good about my Ducks this year as usual.

This IU deal is getting ridiculous. Wins over three cupcakes and two teams that will fight for the last place spot in B10...and we're below them for playing a nip and tuck game til the very end vs #7 PSU? And we've won @T25 Nebraska?

Rutgers is 4-0, has way better wins, and is much, much more deserving of a spot...7 votes? This is silly...

Kinda wish we'd dropped out tbh, but this team has been playing with a maturity level that I worry about it a bit less.

The reality of our resume is that we almost lost to a pretty bad Kansas team at home. But we survived there and that's probably our worst performance of the year so far.

Considering how bad KU has looked, this quite really might be true.

pretty incredible to think about considering the field storming, celebration, crowning it as BB's greatest win here, etc...

What??? If you're in a recruits living room, it's a lot easier to sell your program when you have a number in front of your name.

Worst part: Illinois isn't even the biggest snub in his ranking, Boise St isn't there either.
Never listen to anything these people say...

In the article this "Collin also put four teams in the top 25 of his betting power ratings that were not on my ballot: No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 20 Louisville, No. 22 Iowa and No. 23 Nebraska"

This tells you everything you need to know.. They have Nebraska ahead of us when we just beat them at their place.. However, we lose ( in the process, hold them to their lost point total of the year and was in a winnable game until the final 3 minutes ) and we drop out of the rankings completely to them, not even mentioned.

I am not sure what Illinois did to the media in the past, but it is clear, the media does not care about Illinois sports unless we make them care. Every school gets the benefit of the doubt, but not Illinois. We are always considered the worst case scenario.

That said, one of the ranked teams that we beat is ending up to be one of the worst teams in college football.

Indiana looks solid right now.
they look “solid” because they haven’t really played anyone yet . overall , the easiest B1G schedule of anyone

Kentucky being disrespected
They are being treated with the respect of their record so far (a few votes in both polls). Losing 31-6 at home against South Carolina is holding them back at the moment, as it should. I do think they have top 25 potential, but they will need to win a couple more games to get there. If they beat both Vandy and @Florida, they will likely appear in top 25 at 5-2. They do not deserve a number in front of their name yet.

The AP Poll is so ridiculous in how it works, but I can never decide if I like it in a nostalgic way or absolutely hate it as an antiquated mess, lol. It's pretty much a points-based ladder ... you'll get some points for a win, and you'll lose some points for a loss, with a "good" win or a "bad" loss leading to a more extreme swing. Other than that, it will just depend on the teams around you. It's a rewards-based, goofy system that in no way is ACTUALLY having these writers rank the 25 teams they actually think are the best football teams ... and I am theoretically okay with that, haha. It's this fun throwback to an era before things like Sagarin Ratings or whatever. And there will always be a prestige to a bunch of college football journalists giving out recognition to certain teams based on factors beyond just pure talent or reputation.

With that said ... sometimes it is so frustrating. There is no universe where Indiana deserves to be ahead of Rutgers, let alone Illinois. And you can't convince me otherwise.

So jump in. Say you're an AP voter. Sit in that seat and assess the first month of the season. Who are your top 25?

Fun w/ polls....so I dove into the details of the AP poll for this week. Of the 63 voters, I counted 14 who are in the traditional B1G footprint.

- Of those 14, 12 ranked Illinois, for an average ranking of 20.67.
- Of those 14, 11 ranked Indiana, for an average ranking of 21.18

Within those 14, Illinois' highest ranking is 12th (Dylan Sinn, Ft Wayne and an Indiana alum no less), and Indiana's is 15th (Stephen Means, Cleveland.com, Kent State alum)

In reality, it's freaking September 30th. Barely any conference games have been played yet, and comparisons amongst teams not named Georgia and Alabama is just mental gymnastics at this point. And on top of that, the AP polls mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things, but I get it, it's all we have to go off of at this point.

I'm not really saying I could do a "better" job ... but I am also not a full-time sports reporter. Between my actual job, wasting time on Illinois Loyalty and the never-ending energy of our 9-month old son, I stay pretty busy! :ROFLMAO: I also tried to make it clear that I am pretty conflicted about how the AP Poll works, and I can't really decide if I think it needs any changing at all. While I think Illinois clearly "deserves" to be above Indiana based on our resumes so far, maybe there is an argument for a more traditional ranking like the AP Poll awarding being 5-0 and having a 2-0 conference record? I'm not sure. I do think it might be beneficial for the Associated Press to publish some abbreviated guidelines that their voters are encouraged to use. As of now, it seems some clearly are prioritizing things like strength of schedule while others are not.

The one gripe I absolutely 110% have with the AP Poll in both sports, however, is that it constantly has what I consider to be contradicting movements for two teams that play each other. If beating Illinois in a close game at home is "worthy" of moving up two spots for Penn State, then Illinois should not be punished by moving down FIVE spots for losing said game on the road. Either PSU's victory was impressive because Illinois is a good team (and thus Illinois' performance on the road is at least impressive enough to allow us to drop 1-2 spots at most), or Illinois is now seen as an overrated team, and PSU should not really move up at all.

29. Indiana
44. Rutgers
50. Illinois

I haven't the foggiest idea how, but Indiana is legit.
Iowa at 17! My in-laws who went to Iowa always complain about their football team, and I shake my head. 8-10 wins year in year out, and they are disappointed because they can't get over the hump. What a problem to have.

And this is where my soft spot for the AP Poll comes in. I am not sure such a "hard science" rating is better than a subjective rating (even with human error) this early in the season. Indiana's impressive start meaning anything rests on UCLA not being awful and Maryland not being bad, haha.

EDIT: I am not necessarily saying I don't think Indiana is good ... maybe they are, and they have certainly put up impressive numbers. However, I think that has to be balanced with Illinois playing much better competition (at least we think).

I have to believe the AP voters have to be biased in favor of wins vs losses. You can only play the teams on your schedule, and Indinia has gone 5-0, while we've gone 4-1 (admittedly against stronger competition, but we have one loss and they have none) . . .

The bastardized conference scheduling created by conference expansion has created opportunities whereby teams like Indinia having a cupcake schedule this year (the easiest schedule in the conference according the College Football News), while UCLA has the most difficult schedule according to the same source. I have no idea how the B1G is realistically going to crown a conference champion with the potential spaghetti bowl of results that is going to surface at the end of the season.

We would feel the same way after a few decades of getting close but still being so far away. 11 straight bowl games is phenomenal, but they also have not won a conference title since 2004. That is not far off of the year of our last title, despite all the success they have had.
