I was actually at this game-just got back to Des Moines after going to the game with my Iowa student son (please don’t judge-in-state tuition and a bunch of his buddies going to Iowa City is an admittedly strong pull) and taking him to dinner. Pretty much what you’d expect with these two teams. Close, not boring, but not good basketball-particularly on defense. But by the end of the game, you knew both teams were feeling a lot of pressure to get a win.

Side note-not sure if Holtman’s white sneakers with blue business suit or Fran’s hooded sweatshirt was the less inspiring coach look at Carver-Hawkeye tonight.

B1G Weekly Power Rankings:
1. Purdue - Would have to lose a couple straight to be in danger of falling here.
2. Illinois - Haven't looked awesome for a couple weeks, and still have won 4 of 5 with their only loss being an OT road loss.
3. Wisconsin - Similar OT road loss, weaker overall efficiency numbers.
4. Michigan State - There's a huge gap here between 3 and 4. MSU may not be the top 10 team we initially thought, but they're a solid 6-7 seed in the NCAA tourney that is going to make life miserable for some 2/3 seed.
5. Northwestern - Came oh-so-close to establishing themselves in the top 4, especially with their closing schedule. A safer and safer bet for a tourney spot, as long as they don't take a dive.
6. Nebraska - Huge comeback to salvage a much-needed Q1 win. Their game at Illinois Sunday will be their last game against a top 40 opponent all season.
7. Maryland - Still can't score, but they do defend better than anyone right now.
8. Iowa - Possibly the most irrelevant Iowa team I can remember. Not good, not bad, just not relevant.
9. Indiana - Another uninspiring team that's just hanging around the middle of the conference.
10. Minnesota - A bad team, but there are too many worse teams in this league to make them look too bad.
11. Penn State - How these guys are not the worst team in the league will forever remain a mystery to me.
12. Ohio State - They just look like they've given up.
13. Michigan - I'm not convinced they win another B1G game this season. We'll see this weekend.
14. Rutgers - At least Jeremiah Williams is cleared to play, and they host Michigan this weekend so maybe they can win?
Interesting power rankings but Wisky is ahead of us. They have more Q1 wins and NET ranking is about equal

I have MSU down at 6 NU and NW moves up. Their metrics and NET are good but they haven’t won the games

OSU I would put at 10

scUM is the only team that looks like they are ready to quit and should be 14. I would have RU at 11

a shame . I was there with some TH clients in 1985. Old school .
It was unfortunate. A lot of historical memorabilia was lost from the prohibition era. I personally enjoyed checking out the stuff more than their steaks.

That sweatshirt the entire Iowa staff was wearing looked especially . . . . <insert non offending adjective here >
I think perhaps "Iowan" is the term you seek. But that may also be offensive to some.

After watching Indiana get up on a very avg. PSU suad by 10 in the first half, what happened next is a lesson in what can happen to any team. PSU starts throwing in contested threes and horse shot type layups to take an 18 pt. lead in the last 3 min.

Point is I laugh at posters who say so-and-so team is terrible and WE could/should never lose to them. The fact is that any team is beatable when their opponent is throwing in threes from multiple sources and the basket shrinks for the higher rated one. We should never lose sight of that. If you watched any of that IU/PSU game, it should make any Illini fan leary of playing IU at home. The Hoosiers were having their way and seemingly scoring at will....when all of a sudden, the basketball gods decided they were not going to win today.

That is why the B1G schedule is seemingly interminable and so fatiguing....as well as unpredictable. I see posts saying the Illini should win Sun. because Nebraska is a poor road team. But saying that is folly. Neb. has three terrific shooters and a smart, tough, skilled big. To assure an Illini win, our guys have to focus and execute in all the details...and still might get beat if Husker shots are falling...as Purdue found out.

Sure, smart money will be on the Illini at home...but smart fans will be rooting like banshees to try to lift this Illini team to an inspired performance. That is what it takes, not trash talk...which is a perfect adjective because that is where it belongs.
