Over lunchtime, I went on a bit of a fishing expedition about George Ivory, the Head Coach of Mississippi Valley State, and the former Head Coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Coach Ivory has been the Head Coach of MVS since 2022, where his overall record with the team is 10-98, winning just under 10% of his coached games. By the end of the month, he'll likely have more losses at MVS than Brad Underwood has had at Illinois in his entire tenure. His entire career Head Coaching record is 150-367, winning just 29% of his games.
I used ChatGPT to scrape together a list of the most losses all time for Head Coaches in CBB, and if ChatGPT is correct, Coach Ivory is nipping at the heals of losing greatness:
Biggest "Losers" of All Time:
1. Cliff Ellis - 848-559
2. Greg Kampe - 708-535
3. Bob Huggins - 935-414
4. Jim Boeheim - 1,015-371
5. Bob Knight - 902-371
6. Mike Krzyzewski - 1,202-368
7. George Ivory - 150-367
Either it's a crazy coincidence I came across this or ChatGPT is wrong, but if the former, then we're on the eve of greatness of Coach Ivory tying Coach K's place for 6th place. By the end of the year, he'll almost certainly be the 4th biggest loser, and if he keeps his job for 2 more seasons, he'll have a solid spot at 3rd.
This leads to my question: what exactly is going on at MVS and with Coach Ivory? Since he took over as head coach in 2022, he hasn’t cracked a 357th ranking on KenPom. Is there any hope that he’s going to turn the program around? Can we get this man some NIL? If it’s a money issue, what a story it would be if he got some kind of cash injection and turned MVS around.
Hope someone enjoys reading this on a Friday afternoon. I’d appreciate any corrections if there are mistakes, and I’d also be interested in any additional information about Coach Ivory if anyone has it.
