Good lord, can't find highlights... Didn't watch. So eager :D:D:D
Oh my goodness...
Game bizarrely goes to first OT, 5 seconds left in first OT, 2 point game, Minny at the foul line, guy misses both, another guy intentionally fouls up 2 thinking they were up 3, game goes to a second OT, OSU wins.

I think at the end both of these teams will be bottom of conference.

At this point, there's only 7 teams I'd remotely worry about with the conference title race. Remotely - not trying to create a tier 1.

scUM, WISCY, UCLA, ORE, Purdon't, IU, MSU.

If the season ended today, A.J. Storr is making $10,000 per point scored. Averaging only 7.5 per game.

Not Nebraska or THE?

Might have to add UW to the list. We’ll know if they’re for real soon enough, they’re in the middle of a Q1 gauntlet of 7 games.

Like I told my UW buddy this week….

I watched the first half and both teams were just bad. The fact that Minnesota can't execute anything but it was still a close game says a lot about OSU. I turned to my wife at half time and said we better be so glad we don't have to to root for a team that plays like this.

IU? They are a train wreck. Unless you're talking about a team that could spoil our conference title hopes, they aren't going to be a factor in this conference title race.

Diebler calls a TO right when his guy buries a three to give them the lead.

I know BU does this a lot and people have groaned about it. The reasons this is sometimes done is because it allows them to strategically setup the next possession by adjusting offensive/defensive strategy, potentially to capitalize on the momentum shift created by the big shot, or just to give their players a moment to regroup and maintain focus. It just is an opportunity to further control the flow of the game and potentially dictate the next play based on the opponent's reaction to the 3-point make.

This is primarily done in road games where it is much easier to lose momentum and much easier for the opposing crowd to get back into it. It has been proven to help players actually maintain a positive momentum by the coaches having the opportunity to reinforce that positive energy and setup plays and/or strategies to maintain it and further capitalize on it. There is also a psychological impact on the players, whereas it allows them to regain focus and composure and stay level-headed (as opposed to coming back down next possession with a heat-check or similar that results from overconfidence or inner-hysteria).

Lot of folks will disagree with this and it's totally fine, but these are just some of the reasons you see this being done (again, typically in road games without a team-friendly crowd/fans).

Two random Big Ten thoughts after last night:

1. Minnesota re-emphasized last night that you simply cannot take a night off in this league. A very decent OSU team (a bit inconsistent, but they did dominate a top 5 Kentucky team by 30) was incredibly lucky to survive in Minneapolis last night in 2 OTs vs. what everyone assumed was the only true doormat in the conference. Obviously you cannot take too much away from one game, but our guys better be focused heading to Minneapolis for a Saturday night game on February 8th. Given that many of their fans have likely given up, that Saturday night home game vs. a highly ranked opponent could very well serve as the "one trip to the Barn this season" game for many Gophers fans, and they could actually have a decent atmosphere. On the other hand, maybe our February 2nd home game vs. Ohio State will be slightly less tough than we thought.

2. Regarding Big Ten teams entering the polls, Wisconsin is fairly likely to be another ranked Big Ten team next week if they beat Minnesota at home on Friday. This will of course depend on what happens to the teams just in front of them, but the Badgers were 5th highest team in the RV category, and some of the teams in front of them are facing some likely losses this week.

the loosiers are hamstrung with the worst coach in the B$G....I hope they sign him to a long term extension....I really really do..
I actually hope that they have a semi-decent season and make the tourney (like a 9 seed) and then extend their coach...

Still only 1 loss. I'd feel much better about them than a 3 loss team like Maryland, who only needs 3 or 4 more losses to be totally out of the picture.

Looking ahead at the current first place Spartans schedule & good grief is that schedule funky.

They started with Minnesota, then Nebraska at home. They do not travel to Nebraska this season…. Then they beat up a bad OSU team who just needed double OT to beat Minnesota…

3 of their next 6 are against teams that may not qualify for the B1G tournament (Washington, Rutgers, Minnesota).

They travel to NW & host PSU. 2 middle of the pack teams in the league.

Obviously we play them in a few weeks.

& that’s their January! Very real chance if we don’t steal one in East Lansing they could go into February 9-0..

They then start February playing another B1G tourney bow out team in USC.. 10-0 on the table.. then things make a BIG turn…

Oregon
Indiana
@Illinois
Purdue
@Michigan
@Maryland
Wisconsin
@Iowa
Michigan

Long story short…Remember to not get too carried away with what the Spartans may do these next few weeks. If they truly are B1G contenders, they won’t have a chance to prove that until February. And that’s if everything goes their way, hopefully.. we will have a say in it on 1/19..

You can see every team coming after Illinois after our 5 year run in the B1G.

We will get every teams best every night. You absolutely have to take care of home court in this league or you aren't winning a B1G title. There are a couple of road bumps for even the very best B1G teams of all time.

(casual middle finger to '05 OSU)

It's good to be back, baby! I remember during the 2005 and subsequent 2006 season, it seemed like we were always someone's themed night and highest attendance when we came to town (the latter in no small part because we brought a ton of fans!). For some reason, I also DISTINCTLY remember this stat from January 2006, and I just found it in our very own Illinois Loyalty archives:

Jan. 2006 - Hoosiers Defeat Illini

Excerpt: Tonight's defeats marks the 2nd straight road defeat for Illinois, and the 3rd straight regular season road loss where the opposing fans stormed the court in celebration

You want to be the type of program that has a target on its back ... it's so good to finally be back at that level!

I think it's only a matter of time before lack luster play from the Bloomington Boys and inferior coaching, results I'm multiple losses for the loosiers
