38% for the season for free throws for Payne? I think I could shoot 38% from the line. Yikes.

I’m pretty impressed with how they made something of their season. I had them entirely written off going into the season. Garcia is a big part of their success of course.

Typical call in favor of Purdue. Just hand them the regular season B1G trophy why don’t you.
We had a chance to beat them. We didn't. We shouldn't have lost to Maryland at home. We did. We had a late lead on Northwestern. We lost. We had a firm grasp on the game at MSU. We lost.

If anyone gave them the trophy, it's our team. We should be right there with them, but we're not. The referees have absolutely nothing to do with the standings.

We didn't give Purdue anything. They went out and took it. You know why? Because they are a great team and don't need anything handed to them.

Your name on here goes well with your posts.

I didn't say that we gave them anything, but that doesn't mean that we didn't play them and the opportunity wasn't there, right? The game happened. We have four conference losses. How many of those games were there to be had?

Of course it does because it's true. Playing Purdue, at Mackey, is a tough ask for anyone, but nobody can tell me that we're aren't better than Maryland at home and nobody can tell me that we didn't have every opportunity to close out two games(@NW and @MSU) and we didn't.

That's the difference right now. The gist of the point is that you stated that the refs are giving them the trophy and my response is that it's a ridiculous take.

I think even the most glass-half-empty, Negative Nancy Illini fan who loves to swim in his own misery because he’s adopted it as part of his persona would agree that we SHOULD have won at Northwestern. Even if you want to chalk none of NU’s insane shooting up to bad luck for us, we needed ONE more layup to drop (and that still would have been an historically bad percentage, lol)) and we win in regulation.

We were also very lucky to beat Nebraska (at home), Indiana (at home), and MSU (at home). It's not like we are 0-4 in close conference games. We are 3-4, and that's a stretch for performances like Maryland.

We aren't there. Pretending like we're super-close or super-unlucky is kind of silly, right? Illinois has a high ceiling, but that resume is very much reality at this point.

That's a valid point. Can't just throw out the games where we escaped....for which there were a handful.

College hoops really needs a coaches challenge because these officials have a tough jobs and sometimes they miss calls nearly everyone sees. The call Ben Johnson was T'd on was a clear foul on Edy and the tipped ball by Purdue when Minnesota was down 4 with 3 1/2 minutes left was awful! Everyone but the refs saw that. How many goal tends are missed off the backboard that could be easily corrected. They need coaches challenges in college hoops. Maybe not all calls but out of bounds, goal tending and player safety or other easier areas should be able to be challenged.

Refs eject the NW player on another reviewed awful call. Announcers totally disagreed. Guy was accidentally elbowed but he wasn't purposely punched in the nuts. Who hasn't been hit there playing hoops on accident. It was a common foul n refs screwed up. I was anti kitties too fyi! Coleman yells boom at the crowd and was T'd. That was a total joke of a call on any player. Some of these refs that blow reviews or make dumb calls need fired! Lol

Eh, I’m not sure Nebraska is lucky. We were up by 10 late, and we withheld their comeback even as they had one of their best shooting performances of the year. I’d need to look at the MSU game again, though. I’d say of our losses in the Big Ten…

- Purdue: Lost, period. No TSJ hurt, but it wasn’t even as close as the score indicated, and a bogus T helped us.
- Northwestern: Should have won, period. JMO. One layup made by us or one circus shot missed by then wins it in regulation.
- Maryland: Deserved to lose, played like crap.
- Michigan State: “Should” have won in theory, but we folded so hard that it spoke to us losing it through our own efforts more than any bad luck or whatever.

So I think it’s fair to at least say we “should” have 3 losses. If that were the case, we’d be one game bank with a matchup yet to come vs. Purdue in the House of ‘Paign.

Personally, I'm with you. I get tired of seeing the griping about officiating. I call it the "walrus" excuse - WLRS, we lost refs sucked. The walrus is a big, clumsy animal that doesn't really look like it's enjoying things. The same seems to happen with people who constantly complain about the officiating.

Yes, officials miss calls. Yes, some officials are a lot better than others. Just like players. Just like coaches. Until a player shoots 95% from the field, never commits a turnover, and never loses a rebound, they shouldn't be complaining to officials. Same thing with coaches - until they are 95% accurate with their gameplanning and in-game adjustments, just stay quiet unless player safety is an issue. If fans complain, there is a national shortage of officials in every single sport. If they think it's so easy, they can start working games.

It's actually one of the things I appreciate about Underwood over the years. When he came to Illinois, he was ALWAYS griping to the officials. Even as an Illinois fan, I was kind of embarrassed that he was representing the university like that. He still expresses his opinion and gets T'd up every so often, but over the years he's become much more reserved and selective in his interaction with officials.
