After the result of the UCLA @ NW game, here is what Illinois needs to get for a 4 seed in the BTT in chronological order:

RUT over PU
ORE over IND
MICH over MD*
MINN over WISC*
ILL over PU
USC over UCLA
NW over MD*
PSU over WISC*
ORE over WASH

*Either Maryland OR Wisconsin would need to lose out. Illinois would get the 3 seed if they both lose out (not happening though)

To get a 5 seed:

Same thing but MD and WISC don't factor in
RUT over PU
ORE over IND
ILL over PU
USC over UCLA
ORE over WASH

Mint - the standard we have set against Michigan especially with our defense

Chocolate - sweet taste of 9 game win streak

Chip - what exists on our shoulder when we enter crisler

The Sunday game doesn't matter, so I really don't think there's anyway we get better than a 4.
Maybe, but if we were (crazy not possible) to win out that would be 6 straight wins over q1 opponents. That would take our net to like 10? Or better? That would get a lot of attention?

Yeah keep me in the 6 or even 7 seed all day at this point. I’m also not sure I want us to make a deep BTT final run…this team needs rest and practice still
I'm all in favor of making it to the semis. I think once you get to the semis, games really don't matter that much for seeding purposes. While it's always great to have a banner-worthy win, I also think getting home on Saturday night and getting rest and practice time for the tournament will be more beneficial.

I would also rather be the 6 or 7 seed rather than the 4 or 5 - particuarly when I see some of the 10 or 11 seed matchups. Like I said yesterday, I would give away a beach house to draw Drake in the first round. That's a phenomenal matchup for us since Drake is really small (their tallest player is Riley's height) and their best player would be a great matchup for Boswell when Illinois is on defense. Ivisic would run rampant in that game.

I see 5 teams that are head and shoulders above the rest. These are the teams I 100% don't want to see until the elite 8.

Auburn
Alabama
Houston
Duke
Florida

After those teams I see a big jumbled mess. Lots of good teams but nobody sticks out more than the other. For example, the matrix has Wisconsin as a 2 and Maryland as a 5. I see little difference between those 2 teams.

Obviously matchups mean anything lot in basketball. But to be honest, I have no idea which type of team we do well against. Do we want a team that runs with us? Plays slow? Defensive team? Big or small? I really have no idea this year.

I don't see us getting a 4 it would be extremely difficult. Even a 5 would take a pretty big run our resume is good but so is everyone else's above us. 6 is there for the taking though with a couple of wins.

IMO, beating Purdue puts a 6 on the table if we win 1 game in the BTT.

I actually still think we could end as an 8 if we end 0-2.

Lunardi posts his bracketology updates Tues and Fri
In today's update, he has us up to a 7:
That would be ideal. Close to home, so good contingent and IF we win the first round game, we'd play an Iowa State team that wouldn't destroy us athletically. We aren't the fastest, quickest or bouncious team in the world. Those are the teams that we need to avoid.

A second round matchup with Iowa State in Milwaukee would be very nice! If I were a Cyclone fan, I wouldn't like that at all. Would likely be a lot of Illini fans making the trip from Chicago.

Looking at potential movement between the 7s and 6s, I'm not sure where I'd want to be slotted as a 6. Plus, even though the official rules are to not be paired against a team you played more than once until later, I would imagine the committee will try to avoid intra-conference matchups in the first round if they can at all help it.

They'll move a team up or down a seed line before allowing 2 teams from the same conference to meet in the Round of 64. They'll avoid it in the 2nd round if they have the opportunity to do so as well.

I don't really have an informed opinion, but I've scanned KP for a long time, and this year's Duke team is historic. Last year's dominant UCONN was +36 to an average team, and Duke is currently +39. I think most national champs have finished in the +30 to +34 range.
BTW, Auburn, Houston and FL aren't far behind --really unusual year with how top heavy the strongest teams are.

My opinion is if we're an 8/9 seed, the committee puts us with Auburn. If we're a 7/10 seed, we get put with Florida. Both could happen regardless of seed (like we get a 7/10 seed and Auburn is still our 1 seed), but those are my current guesses.

I think this is why climbing to a 6 seed would be huge. 1 or 2 seed pairings could include Auburn, Houston, Florida. Less likely to get Duke, Alabama, Tennessee due to regular season opponents but it’s not prohibited. If Michigan State or Wisconsin get a 2-we played them both twice already so we can’t be in their pos. I’d much rather be a 6 paired with a 3 like Kentucky or St. John’s. We’d likely avoid Iowa State due to playing them last year but again it’s not prohibited.

I believe they've relaxed some of their rematch prohibitions. In any case, keeping the top SEC seeds away from each other isn't going to be possible - I doubt they'll worry about 1 out of conference rematch.

Not sure I agree with the needs practice if the alternative is winning Q1 games on neutral sites. That's the best practice there is.
