Weak athletic directors will give in to fan bases.

Excluding interims, Wittman is the 8th athletic director in my years of following the Illini. Wittman is the strongest and its probably not even close.

Stoner was a much better promoter and snake oil salesman but weaker than Wittman as a director. Stoner was fun to have a beer with.

All the others were managers rather than directors. They managed to keep us in the black but weren't particularly "big" in their thinking and were very adverse to taking chances. Wittman doesn't suffer from that disease.

If Wittman lets JG go, it is because Wittman doesn't have confidence in the future. If he keeps him, it is because he sees something that he thinks deserves one more year or (and this is very possible) he is completely unimpressed with the available replacements out there. A lateral move with another 5 years of disappointment is the worst decision. By the way, there will be a lot more openings than NC State one week after the tournament.

Not one word that anybody on this board says, mine included, will have any
effect on him. We begged for a strong leader, we've got him.

Agree, excellent post and perspective. I sure hope JW is the strong leader he looks like and does what he believes to be best regardless of external pressures.
