Wisconsin 25, Illinois 21 Postgame

Should have won this, Wisconsin handed it to us in the 1st half with many dropped passes etc...we had great field position several times and didn't take advantage enough, then the defense laid an egg on the last 2 minute of the half td they got, and poor play at the end of the game....the Newton targeting was crap...but we never should have allowed Wisconsin to have been within 3 to begin with....definitely put most of this on the coaching/coordinating as well as some continued shoot ourselves in the foot plays throughout the game which is inexcusable for week 8. Just really as shame this was a game we should have had with better prep and fewer dumb mistakes....hope we don't have to look at this one as the game we needed to have a bowl season.
Look at the bright side. All the stars opt out anyway. And that's college football today.

I... don't hate that call. *ducks* He didn't really hit him with the crown of this head, but he did lower his head. It's a really weak targeting but is probably targeting all the same, so they really should call it to help clean up the game.

Please don't hate me.

Not being able to recover from that on D along with a whole host of baffling coaching decisions cost us the game. Not the refs.
I don't hate you, but I don't really care if it is *technically* targeting.

Newton made a good football play and got punished for it, regardless of if some threshold of some rule was met. He works his tail off to play like that on Saturdays. He puts in the effort and instead of being able to celebrate a good play he gets ejected and it plays a huge part in Wisconsin being able to win.

Newton looked like he knew he was getting flagged immediately after the hit. I knew the game was over at that point. We never got any pressure on the QB once he was out. This team cannot manage with both Randolph and Newton out.

On the plus side, it might give the NCAA another opportunity to change another rule due to us being screwed over

And (last one), I love Luke's fight but if doesn't learn how to effectively slide he's going to have a shortened career here

Guess playing 10 on 11 defensively with a safety 25 yards off the ball, and lettin them gut us with the run, wasn't the right call afterall.

Notre dame or Florida, debating my new college football team
Go with the WAGON.... Washington Huskies.... I live just blocks away... Well, maybe a few miles.... Go Huskies...

At least make it overturnable. Asking a lot for a player to be athletic enough to split a double team but GENTLY tackle the poor little QB.

Or penalize Wisconsin for not blocking.

As someone on social pointed out, the original call was roughing the passer and the QB was standing there holding the ball. You can only rough a passer if he’s passing (i.e. the ball has been thrown). That’s the rule book. Let’s be real, they were throwing flags first and seeing the penalty after.

The play of the game, in my opinion, was the play on the touchdown pass that made it 21-17. The play happened right i ln front of me. The safety played the pick instead of the ball. The receiver high pointed it for the touchdown. Absolutely a brutal miss. Plays like that is why you lose games like this.

Coaching staff clearly has zero confidence in Luke passing the ball.
Which is strange, because to me, he throws a great - especially deep - ball if he's given enough time. And I think that is squarely where the lack of confidence truly lies - in the line. It has been terrible all year long in pass protection and not a hell of a lot better in run blocking. Really need some of the young guys to be ready next year. And losing kids like the Nebraska OLineman is a killer to our program. Both lines minus The Law Firm are responsible for this season IMO. We have pieces on offense to score more than 21 a game, which is what we need to score with the D as bad as it is this year. But if you got no line, you got no way to score.

I mean we're asking pass rushers to be physical enough to break through a double team, gently tackle the QB, etc. I get that the rules are there for safety.... but if you have replay, use it? Games are already obnoxiously long and commercial flooded. I don't care if it's 4 hours or 5, get the calls right.

The thing about the targeting call was the official called roughing the passer first, even though the quarterback still had the ball. Newton looked like he had knocked the ball loose before he made contact.

There was also a grounding call they missed in that 4th quarter. The qb was still in the pocket and there was no receiver within 15-20 yards of the throw.

I normally don't pile on bad announcers...but this was one of the most egregious rubbing every successful Wisc play in Illinois faces I've ever heard.
They both should be embarrassed.

I've never heard an announcer literally scream for every great play of only one team.
Guess you've never heard Gus Johnson call a game.

Yeah, at first I thought Strain defended the pass. But the replay showed otherwise. We needed a turnover to win this after Newton had to leave.

Was surprised to find out the PBP guy used to work for the Bulls back in the day as a sideline reporter. He's now the Charlotte Hornets PBP guy.
