This is the question really at this point is really: Could we get a new coach that lands a better 17 class than Groce? Would likely take a big name and/or some assistants with previous connections.

Of course as I recall during Coach Weber's last season there was significant criticism of his sideline behavior.

Are there any rules to having a PG in an offense?
Can we not insert anyone else who can contribute more to an offense? Have no idea what the two PGs we have are doing. What is their contribution for a coach to keep them in a dead game. Not a problem with the kids, hopefully they get a good free education and move on in life.

I don't read that as a crucifixion . . . he's pointing out that MH leads the team in everything that matters in a game, and that he is the heart and soul of this team. I happen to agree. . . .

Izzo is constantly on the floor. Bench antics are just one more place for fans to turn their ire when the season goes south.

That's my point. Tyler's post is a response to his undeserved crucifixion by so many fans. I agree. Malcolm leads this team in EVERY category. I can think of maybe two bad games he's had this year. He's been solid to great in every single other one, on a team where he is one of two options.
People love to rip Malcolm because he's the best player on a bad team. Those people should read that Illiniboard post.
"goes south" is the problem, not so much the "Bench antics".
IF Groce could recover as well as Izzo - in recruiting and wins ............. Not that I like Izzo jumping around either, despite his record over the years.

IMO, more coaches have "sideline antics" than not. Dean Smith, while stoic at some times, would be absolutely maniacal at others. Izzo, Roy, Knight, Self, Heathcote, Keady, Gary Williams, etc. Name a hall of fame coach and they've probably got some "sideline antics" in their repertoire.
Groce's animation is the thing I'm least concerned about with him (until he gets T'd up for being out at the free throw line).
I am not sure if "recover" is the right word in this case. Izzo never had to recover from anything, as steady of a coach as they come.

Not really sure what to say about last night's game. Really found it odd Khalid felt the need to put the team on his shoulders with some of his (pretty makeable but somehow missed) shots at the end of the game.
Was more or less bored while watching. Would like to see some actual set plays or schemes. This ongoing street ball offensive philosophy hasn't been working for a couple of seasons now.
At least our D seems to be picking up a notch. AJ seems to be picking it up on the defensive end (a couple freshman mistakes aside). Glad to see Mav contributing more, although it'd be nice to see him grip the ball like it was a suitcase filled with millions of dollars. It's astonishing how often the ball gets stripped from him still.
At this point, I'm all for DJW and AJ getting whatever tick Austin and Khalid would get.

A friend of mine said something similar a few years ago. He then missed the Tyler Griffey Indiana game.
Earlier in the season, I did not think that our biggest weakness was our point guard play, but our interior defense. Now that we're in conference play, I definitely believe that it's our biggest weakness. Finke and Mav have improved their defense enough that I don't think it's our biggest issue. Sure, our rebounding has been terrible, but despite those weaknesses, we've been close to so many wins. It hurts that we're not able to get much offense from Tate or Lewis. I know Tracy had his weaknesses, but if we could even have 6-7 ppg from our point guards, many of these L's could be W's.
I'm really looking forward to next year with Black, Kipper, and Lucas. I just feel bad for the current guys, it's not their fault that we've had bad luck and weaknesses at key positions. The bad luck, and lack of scoring punch at the 1 has caused us to be so one-dimensional and easier to guard. The team has to overachieve on offense in almost every game for us to even have a chance. With that being said, I hope people still support the players out their giving it their all.

Me too. They are doing their part. They've worked hard, improved their games, and I hate to see them stymied by an inordinate amount of bad luck.
At least they all get another shot (senior transfers aside) next year. We're due for a healthy year, and if Hill and Nunn can go out on a high note, it will color their whole college career.

At this point, the season is about showing development and building for the future. I'll happily sign this petition.
Agree, agree, this needs to be on the top of MY list. Its one thing to grouse about coaching and recruitment but in the mean time, thee kids are giving their bodies, minds and college ball careers to Illinois and its fans, and doing their best. They deserve our support though thick and thin. This includes Tate, Austin, and Lewis.
We dont get to choose who decides to come here or who gets to play, but we should support the guys who do.

KN would have no problem bringing the ball upcourt 1 on 1 against an opposing PG. If that's the lone criteria for JT and KL starting, then that's a really, really low bar of expectations for a Power 5 conference program.

I REALLY hope Nunn and Hill get to play in the tourney.
In the meantime, I will keep watching and cheering even though it can be painful (as a life long illini fan).

I mean, I like to think I'm real about where our program is right now, but at the same time, if Malcolm Hill doesn't get to play in a tournament game in his Illinois career, my head is going to explode.
