Wisconsin 69, Illinois 60 POSTGAME

Finke clearly has regressed the last month.

Yeah. I don't know if its lingering effects from the injury, or if he's just hitting the wall from the amount of minutes he's playing in his first season, but it's a been noticeably different level of play.

Probably a combination of both

He is the only ref with that status for me. Just drives me crazy

Needs to take a cue from Hightower and retire.

The play where he showboated on Nunn's out of bounds and didn't even have the call right really sums up everything that is wrong with him

The Freshman overall as a group graded out rather poorly last night.

They had a defender glued to jcl everywhere he went. I watched him quite a bit on offense trying to get open off screens and he just couldn't shake free. You could tell part of their plan was to not let him get going from deep.

I couldn't agree with you more. For whatever reason, he seems incredibly timid out there. He was also one of the major reasons we lost the lead yesterday. We were up 11 and he missed 2 free throws. Then, a couple of minutes later he faked a 3 from the corner and started driving to the basket. Had he continued to go strong, he had a clear path for a dunk. However, as he approached the basket, he slowed down for an unknown reason and wound up just throwing the ball away. In the first half, he also had the ball right under the basket but seemed hesitant to just take the ball up strong and score or get fouled. Instead, he inexplicably looked for help and threw it away.

Go back and look at the play. He didn't throw the ball away on the baseline drive. The defender reached around his back and poked it away from him. I don't think the defender touched him on the play, but if one of our guys reached around one of them, it would have been double bonus.

Yeah, it looked like Wisconsin assigned Showalter to guard him, I believe he's their best perimeter defender.

Officiating was probably the worst I've seen this year, but even a mediocre team would have still won that game. Edit: a mediocre team did win that game but that's besides the point. The play of our team never exceeds the sum of its parts and that's been a huge problem this year.

I know these guys watch film. Just wondering if they watched the second half of the Wisky/MD game? Wisky ran a clinic on how to maintain a second half lead and close it out on the road.
We were in that exact same position, and good for us for getting there, but did not maintain it nor close it out. And as many of you have already commented, for many reasons.

Officiating was not the reason the team lost. Was officiating good when Illinois had the lead? Admit the team played a terrible second half and quit blaming the officials for the teams terrible play.

Amen. Ditto. Harrumph. +1. This.

I think he hit the wall too. Some of it is the long schedule and conditioning. He gets beat up in the post.

He did look good nailing some threes late. Guy is going to be a big time player as an upper classman.

This team can be really fun to watch when they are playing downhill. The problem is we can't consistently do that because of 2 things, no depth and poor defense. For the first 25 minutes Wisconsin couldn't make a shot. That allowed us to grab the rebound and immediately look to push the ball up the court. But once Wisconsin started scoring, we weren't able to push the ball. And when we are in a half court game is when we really need a PG or C.....Unfortunately, we don't.

What bothered me most about the game was I think we had more talent on the floor than Wisky. We keep talking about the guys we're missing, but those guys aren't our most talented.

Yes, Happ and Hayes are good, but who else is that good? Do they have guys who are that much better than KN, MH, JCL, and DJW (who is coming along well)?

Even though Happ is better, MM has been pretty good this year, and Finke, when he's not being Funke, is a talented guy. We have talent, and a less talented team beat us...again.

Can someone tell Groce that we don't get a better pick in the NCAA draft by finishing with the worst record in the Big Ten?

Not enough warm bodies.

Anyone remember Bob Blackman going off on the refs on his Sunday morning tv show after the Michigan game in '74? Was hilarious.

Would that happen to be the game where Mike Gow ran back a punt return for a touchdown that would have given us the lead, or at least brought us closer to the lead, and some referee called an invisible foul to bring the ball back and negate the touchdown?
I remember that like it was yesterday, sitting with the Marching Illini. Ah yes, the year of the streaker!!

Yes Wisconsin is more talented than us as currently constructed.

Iirc, Michigan got up 14-0 early. Illini defense started dominating and by the fourth quarter Michigan was going nowhere. Mich punted from their end zone and it was returned for a TD and a 2 pt conversion was successful. 14-8 Mich.

Illini kicked off and Mich again went backwards and again punted from the end zone. the return was inside the 10 yd line. Pass play and touchdown. ref called the receiver out of bounds. Film showed the receiver in bounds, both feet, not even close to being out. It was a TD, only needed a PAT to win. Virtually no time left on clock.

Blackman had a TV show on Sunday morning... showed the replay about a dozen times and got fined a ton by the Big Ten.
