With Lovie as the new coach / CU bars

This was life on autumn Saturday's in the mid-80's. The team was middling, but Memorial Stadium was the place to be.

It sounds like they're trying to do some good promotions to get the students into the games. I think like some people said in this thread earlier they should do even more promotions to get students to the Grange

As a quasi-recent student ('12 grad) they didn't do any marketing/promotion for students when I was in school. I always assumed that since students weren't a revenue source that they just didn't bother. I think they're starting to realize how important they are to the atmosphere at games.

No stinking policies. I was there from 77-82. Fraternity on Armory & Second. The only time there was an alcohol restriction was during formal rush. You could drink beer & wine at 19 in Urbana bars. Sororities and fraternities had blocks of seats together in the center of the stadium. It was the place to be during a game. We took wineskins in to help keep us motivated. We raced passing girls over our heads up to the top row of the stadium. We had a beer budget at the house. Buy the kegs on Thursday and make sure they were drained by Monday. Cats and dogs, in the street...And yet we've mostly become productive citizens...

I was there 79-83

for beer and wine , at age 18 you were legal in Urbana, age 19 you were legal EVERYWHERE in the state. in practice, if you had a student ID , you could get into any bar on campus and drink beer. students never really drank liquor except at parties .

everything else you wrote is spot on.

While change is inevitable, I strongly prefer the mom and pop business atmosphere of Green street then versus the corporate place it is now. if you want old school campus towns, you can still find them in the south and southwest, not so much in the B1G anymore.

It is funny that you say that… Lincoln is sort of a mix between the two as of right now. But I can see it slowly starting to shift to more of the corporate type atmosphere.

+10000. Long live the bota and peppermint schnapps during cold games. Same experience 79-83. Never missed a fb or bb game. Can't imagine sitting in a bar when you can be there in person.

Very much agree. As u said, change is inevitable. But that doesn't always mean for the better. I believe the direction campuses like the U of I is heading in only further divide the haves from the have nots ... And that is unfortunate. I was an athlete in a non revenue sport during the mid 80's and there is no way I could've gone to college, let alone earn a degree, if not for that scholarship. Maybe because of that, I always appreciated the mom and pop places that were more my comfort zone. I hate when I see places like DeLuxe, the White Horse Inn, Mabel's, Cochrane's, Trito's, the Illini Inn, etc go by the wayside to make room for big money places catering to the spoiled, silver spoon crowd.

Would've much rather seen a continued mix of the two types of establishments.

I remember as a freshman, being too poor to buy student tickets, we would watch the games in the living room and sprint outside to hear the "cannon" fire whenever we scored (a practice they stopped and replaced with the bell after Sept 11).

After that I had season tickets every year. For Block we would go to a bar to pre-game and then head to the stadium. Our block was always on the south endzone line on the east side of the stadium.

I remember when #2 Ohio State came to our house on Nov 2, 2002 for a night game. We took them to OT and it was the loudest I've ever heard the stadium. Had there been instant replay, the outcome of that game may have been different. Walter Young caught a TD in OT but was ruled out of bounds. It was right in front of me, he caught the ball! Ohio State went on to win the NC that year

When did Block move from the houses to the bars? When I was there (1996-2000) the frats would host block at their house with their partner sorority. Some would head to game. Some would not.

It must have happened right after you left. I know that by 2003 block was at bars.

I was there from 2000-2004 and block was at a bar pre-game, but everyone still left for the game when it started. As time went on, more and more people must have started staying behind until no one.

Part of it may also be the the student section in the north endzone. When I was there Block I was on/near the 50 yard line and block seats were next to that. I can't imagine the north endzone is a great place to get stuck

I know many don't like endzone seats. I've never really understood that, since you get to see every play develop from that perspective. I love it. I actually prefer endzone views. I guess that makes me weird.

I would hope the new regime under Whitman and Lovie will provide a better experience than in the past.

I was there 04-08. My first two years were so awful. It was much more fun to hand out at the bar with girls and beer, than go watch us lost. That 05 team was especially disheartening.

Willie's Mug Club membership number, earned by chugging a large mug of beer to the cheers (jeers if you can't make it) of patrons at the Illini Inn. The Illini Inn was a divey bar that apparently is now gone

I was a student when they moved us from the sidelines to the endzone. There was a lot of grumbling about the move, but once we got there, it wasn't so bad. It was actually kind of fun just having our own area to get rowdy in. Then again, that was the Rose Bowl year, so students were going to games and they were actually exciting. Now I look up there and it doesn't look so fun.

It really is a matter of getting the students out of the bars and to the games. I did serve on a short lived committee at the DIA aimed at getting more Greeks to the games. This was about 2007 or 2008...so it is no new subject. The main idea that came out was just a big fenced off area SE of the stadium (in the DIA lot)...similar to how Indiana's Greeks do it (which is a blast if you've ever been). Obviously that never came to fruition, but I wonder if it was ever brought back up...

Maybe KAM's can make a temporary structure in a lot near the stadium...that would have gotten more of us there before an 11 am start!

To further continue the hijacking of this thread with mug club numbers, mine is #45898 on 3/2/06. I was one of the odd ones who got their membership after graduating.

Interesting, so how does Indian do it?

At Nebraska, when I was there, there was basically nothing structured at all for tailgating and Greek like. Things have changed a bit where the Greeks will usually rent out a house in the area called the North Bottoms (NoBo) and pair up with a sorority or two and host their tailgates in that area. But nothing really goes on at the houses from what I know and when I was in a frat we really did not do much in terms of tailgating at the house.

I don't know the Illini campus all that well but would it be a pain for some houses to get to the stadium instead of the bars? It didn't seem like that would be the case.

Also, can I ask what DIA stands for? The fact that you mentioned that it was discussed in the past about how to get more Greeks/Students to the games really shows that it is a bit of a problem. I know at Nebraska you might not even get student tickets if you order them.

Jeers even if you were just drinking slow "C'mon you sissy (maybe a harsher word there). "Drink it you ___________" Lots of rough girls there too. I joined the Friday night of Homecoming before the big game against tOSU in 1983. #8303.
