Jerrod Niemann (9/10) and Parmalee (10/29 homecoming) are performing at Grange Grove prior to football games. Those are legit country performers that will definitely draw out students, especially since it's free.

What happened to white ho? I was in town and saw it a couple weeks ago.

Torn down to make way for yet another high-rise apartment building. FYI White Ho still exists, though, just in another location and form. It took over the former St. Louis Bread Co/Panera Bread/Bar Louie space near 6th and John.

RIP Illini Inn and White Horse.

Just to confirm, yes, the Inn was bought by Green Street Reality and I believe the plan now is to put a bar in that building on the first floor. But the old inn is done. White Horse is also closed down. The building and liquor license for the location have been purchased and it's actually being turned into a Chinese restaurant.

Wait, are you talking about the new location for White Horse? I was just there about a month and a half ago when I was back in town. You're telling me that one is closing, too? :tsk:

Yep, that one is closed :(

It truly is a different era now. Even going back this last time it didn't feel like the same place. So much has changed in Campustown, on campus, and the student body since I was a student there only 15 short years ago, and even since I just left town 5 years ago. :(

Hell, I graduated in 2013 and the campus is already way different from when I was there. It's weird, man.

Yeah I saw the white ho location on John. Figured it was just closed for the summer. Green street is getting ridiculous with these apartment complexes.

For those of you that a bit older what was the policy for booze at frat houses? Could you have kegs, can you still? Do you need to get permits and stuff like that? Nebraska really cracked down about 15 years ago.

I dunno if permits were ever required but finding parties with kegs was never really a problem. That would be class of '95.

I just really think that Grange Grove could be a rocking place. There was a lot right across from it that seemed pretty decent too. But, when the culture is already in place where a big portion of students don't show up because they have other plans it would seem like a tall order to get them to change that. Especially since you can be 19 and get into the bars.

I did not go to Illinois but I was in a frat in Lincoln and I am trying to think about it I would probably do whatever the tradition in our house was. Now, winning could change that to a degree. But I think first and foremost the guys want to be where the girls will be at and so like someone said a few posts back you might have to start with that.

Small scale Wall Street. No sunlight hits Green Street anymore.

My first time in CU was with my family in 2005, don't remember it too well. Been back pretty much yearly from 2011 until now, and watching the transformation of Campustown and downtown has been exciting. Again, I don't have the sentimentality of the old establishments or campus traditions as you guys, but it's worth noting that I've taken several Iowa City natives whose parents have described CU as a dumpy town in the middle of cornfields that has a nice campus and not much else, and they've come back home wanting to return to Champaign because it's so much fun and a nice city, bewildered by their parents' totally off-base description of the town.

I get the change can be sad for those who've always loved the town, but Champaign is slowly but surely changing its reputation into a really cool college town that's a great time, and that can only be a good thing for the U of I and its sports.

You guys bring a smile to my face. Last time I returned to campus, all the junior high school kids walking around had me confused until I realized they were college students.

No stinking policies. I was there from 77-82. Fraternity on Armory & Second. The only time there was an alcohol restriction was during formal rush. You could drink beer & wine at 19 in Urbana bars. Sororities and fraternities had blocks of seats together in the center of the stadium. It was the place to be during a game. We took wineskins in to help keep us motivated. We raced passing girls over our heads up to the top row of the stadium. We had a beer budget at the house. Buy the kegs on Thursday and make sure they were drained by Monday. Cats and dogs, in the street...And yet we've mostly become productive citizens...

Reading that is just awesome! I bet all of that was a blast. The crap they have to go through now is crazy.

This same approach lasted from 82 through 87. Good times.:thumb:
