With Lovie as the new coach / CU bars

Awesome news about the beer garden, last year when me and a bunch of alum came for homecoming we ran out of roadies too quickly when we got to GG. Being able to purchase a few more would've been perfect.

Last time I talked to someone in DIA about trying to recruit more Greek houses to do "block" in Grange Grove, they mentioned that one of the issues is that most houses sign yearlong contracts with the bars that lock them in for the season. So it may not be until next year that they can work around some of these contracts. I think they're working hard to get some student events there early in the year when some rush restrictions may prevent alcohol at official house events, but most of the season is already locked up for Greek houses at least.

The frustrating fact looking back as an alum is that while "Block" at the bar is definitely fun, it's literally something you can do every other day of the year. Tailgating (preferably in Grange Grove, but really anywhere) is an awesome experience you can only do 6 Saturdays a year. My last year at UI our house ran a tailgate instead of a traditional "Block" at a bar, and those Saturday tailgates are still one of my favorite memories of college. [rant over]

Also, there will be a beer garden in Grange Grove this year. :clappy: It'll be run by the stadium concession vendor, and it'll technically be a separate enclosed area (for liquor license issues), but beer will be available to purchase for anyone who doesn't bring their own. Great move!

I would love to see tailgating around Memorial Stadium become a big thing to do for students on campus. All I am saying is that it is easier said than done right now with the way the program has been and what the students have done to make up for a crappy football team (go to the bar and party rather than care about the game).

If the football team becomes what we think it will become under Lovie, then IFC & DIA are huge in making this process happen because people are going to want to be around the buzz of a good football game rather than at a bar.

Frats in GG is a good idea. Champaign bars in GG is a good idea. Not sure mixing the two of them is a good idea.

The thing you have to wrap your head around accepting here is mass-scale, broad-daylight, open-air underage drinking. Intermingling adults and students does not make that any easier.

The kids don't want weird old people up in their business either. Give them their own space and create a mutual understanding that underage drinking is acceptable, but bad behavior that disturbs the neighbors is not, and you're golden.

it can be done.

students and adults tailgate right next to each other at The Grove in Ole Miss and is works fine. Granted , its been a tradition there for about 60 years, so everyone there knows exactly how to act - the students, the alums and the cops.

NO ONE, and I mean no one, is allowed to drink anything alcoholic from a can or bottle. EVERYTHING is poured into a red (or blue) solo cup and that is accepted by the police for that day.. Come midnight or earlier if the case may be, the partys over. Only allowed on game day .

Yup. And it's a win for the University, the football program, the city of Oxford, the students, the adults, everybody. The Grove is the ideal.

Mike Thomas, for all of his faults, understood this. The only reason I wonder about Whitman is that his only experience with big-time football has been either as a player, inside the locker room and away from the action outside, or alongside Ron Guenther. But he certainly seems to have the pulse of the Illini fanbase at large and an understanding of what football Saturdays can and should mean. Lets hope he can work with the other stakeholders to figure this out.

So which bars host "block"... Is there a bit of a pecking order?

Also do sorority girls spend a dime on booze at all?! I know they don't where I went to college

Obviously others should answer, but sometimes an outsider's perspective is interesting! I've been to all the Campustown bars besides Clybourne and White Horse Inn, many of them several times, but I've only drank before (and during) a game at Legends, Joe's, Firehaus and Brothers (we got too drunk to make it to Kam's until night!). Other than Joe's, none of those ones seemed overrun by Greek life, though there was a solid presence at Firehaus, especially in the front. I know Red Lion has a huge party, but I've gotten the vibe it's kind of like Union in Iowa City for anyone who's visited - unless you're like 19, blacked out and ridiculously horny, you'll probably find a bar you like much better. Joe's is big, and I'd imagine Kam's would obviously be the next big one.

Champaign is too classy now. It used to be dingy and gross. CO's, now there was a campus bar a man could learn to drink in.

I'm so sad I never got to go there, my aunt always talks about it, haha.

And downtown Champaign is DEFINITELY classy now a days. I feel comfortable saying people who haven't visited the area since the Hyatt was built haven't experienced the new Champaign. The guy there told us that when they built the hotel, there were 30 bars and restaurants within like 5 square miles, and now it's over 60.

CO's was good....also since I was not in a frat I liked White Horse. Of course I am a bit biased with White Horse since I was a bartender there.

My wife and I were in CU for a few days last week to help my daughter move from her campus apartment to an Urbana apartment. We stayed at a LaQuinta just north of I-74. Each trip from the hotel to campus took us through downtown Champaign. That place is really happening. Even in the middle of the week, the crowds were out walking through town or sitting in the outdoor sections of the bars and restaurants. Very impressive. Made me wish I had sprung for a room at the Hyatt.

Illini Inn. And don't believe it is.
Also, I was told that Illini Inn is being torn down this summer to make way for a larger apartment building and there will be a new bar built in it.

Goodbye Illini Inn from mug club #36068

Yeah, that was block. Three or four fraternities and their partner sorority block at Joes and it's a toned down version of the 10x10 fiasco that happens down the street at Red Lion. I could see one or two of those Joes fraternities as well as some of the ones without block going to grange grove. But block is the social standard for fraternities and sororities on campus. Frankly, it will take one of the top four fraternities to take the leap from block to tailgating (as well as some relaxation by the IFC) for tailgating to really happen. Certainly not unreasonable, but I'd put the timeline at 3-5 years down the road for that to happen.

Sad state - get out of the bars and go tailgate. Make an effort.

They had pretty good pizza back in the 70's.

Willies Thick and Cheesy

it almost always was pulled out of the oven and served about 90 seconds early from being fully cooked.

As frosh in the late 1970's - early 1980's, we would go there on Thurs nights often, get a few mugs of OldStyle and play PacMan, Centipede or Space Invaders.
