I was never an Illini Inn guy (pretty much lived at R&R Sports Grill for 6 straight semesters), but sorry to see it go.

Are some of the bars known as just being Greek bars? I know in Lincoln on our main street we had a few that were almost exclusively Greek bars. Now from what I know there's really just one that is a major Greek bar.

Greek central is Kams. The Illini Inn was for independents and those of us Greeks that preferred a hole in the wall with character and a frosty mug waiting for anyone with a membership card.

Were in like 8 kids top 5-10 which is impressive only being hired in march and not playing a season game

can't brag about how old mine is. Though our house did have a tradition that you got your mug club card during your senior bar crawl...

CO's was a major Greek bar, you could have called Bub's one too depending on the night...

My grandfather used to frequent that establishment when he was on campus, probably around the time it opened. I believe 1933-1938 era is when he was there and I think it opened in 1935, right?

I believe it was the Midway Tap back in those days- at least our fraternity alums from the 50s called it that, and if you cashed a check there in the 80s it would come back to you endorsed for deposit by the Midway Tap.

Second Chance

I went there in the late '70's - one night I talked up the bartender, who was an Illini OL (don't remember his name). Ended up drinking free all night.

Another time, when USC was in town, a couple of their WRs were in there the night before the game. Didn't matter, Illinois still got creamed.

For the way, WAY back crowd, there was the Thunderbird...

Stirring up some memories, man. Treno's and the Thunderbird in Urbana. Red Lion, White Horse, Boni's, Round Robin and, of course, Murphy's in Champaign. Little Kings night at Cochrane's. Sheesh, killed a lotta brain cells during my 4 years in CU.

I did not even go to Illinois for college and I am loving this thread! .35 cent beers! That is awesome!

Can you drink in the frat houses or has that changed?

When did Block move from the houses to the bars? When I was there (1996-2000) the frats would host block at their house with their partner sorority. Some would head to game. Some would not.

Wait, so they would basically tailgate at there house and party before the game? That sounds awesome! I would imagine that was just a blast.

At Lincoln that started to get phased out around 1995ish or so.

Block meant a few kegs at the house, fill up the botas with vodka and koolaid and then walk over the stadium to watch the game.

This was life on autumn Saturday's in the mid-80's. The team was middling, but Memorial Stadium was the place to be.
