On media day, #illini Beckman told team it is important to portray positive "image." Senior class came up with team motto "Invest."

Beckman: Thought Rantoul "went exceptionally well" and was "very, very beneficial" to the team.

Beckman: Won't make announcement now on whether they'll go back to Rantoul in future, but enjoyed hospitality at camp

Beckman on depth issues: "We're not in the NFL where we can get people off waivers" ... will take a little while to build up depth.

Beckman on defense: "I challenged them to be No. 1." Likes experience on D, but says "there's never comfort level" in football

Beckman on goal for D: "To be the best. They weren't the best in the Big Ten last year."

Beckman said he felt better about kicking game before a bad day of field-goal kicking this morning.

ST units have military names. Punt team is Seals. Punt return is Recon. Kickoff team is Delta Force. Kickoff return is Bravo Company

Beckman on Zach Becker: "He loves the orange and blue. Probably cut him open, he's bleeding orange."

Beckman: "He speaks and plays from the heart. There's probably not enough Zach Becker's in the world."

Beckman mentions Ayoola, Church, Bentley, Neal, Svetina, Monheim as freshmen that have "jumped out" and can help team w/ depth & ST

Beckman: problem with kicking is "no one is in the lead." No one has jumped out and taken either kicking or punting job yet.

Keep this in mind during season: #illini Beckman said he'll keep injuries quiet from media. Doesn't want to give opponents any advantage.

I asked #illini redshirt freshman guard Ted Karras if he thought he could win a starting job. His reply: "Yeah, absolutely."

Karras: "I was the number one in the spring and throughout the summer. It’s still an open competition so you got to win it again.”

Alex Golesh said staff told offensive and defensive players they won't start unless they play special teams. Exceptions: QBs

From the comments in other threads re: differences between Zook & Beckman...

I think this photo is pretty illustrative of the difference. Beckman seems like the kind of guy that numbers his forks at home and puts them in the drawer in order.

I'm pretty sure the team photo is always done with the players in numerical order. So this isn't a Beckman vs. Zook difference.

Becker's not getting carried away yet

After all he has been through injurywise in his Illinois career, Zach Becker isn't worried about his role with the team. He will do anything.

"I'm happy to be playing another year," Becker said.

Special teams will be a heavy part of it for Becker, a former walk-on from St. Joseph-Ogden who has dealt with leg and foot injuries. Oh, yeah, and the scooter accident earlier in the year that left the bike in bad shape (it has been replaced).

"Nothing is set in stone yet," Becker said. "I want to have as big an impact on special teams as I can. I want to be on all of them if I can.

I wasn't referring to simply the numerical aspect of the photo. I'm speaking to the overall look & feel/structure of the photo - the little things.

And, no, team photos are not usually organized numerically. They are typically by position groupings or by size, small in front to large.

I'd normally be with you on this, but if you add the blue helmet - they may be on to something.
